    Public Domain Photos

Hey guys, I'm looking for some hi-resolution news photos from the past 40 years or so. And they have to be public domain because I want to use them for something that will be published.

I've heard of archives of stuff like this, but I don't know what they're called or where to look, so if anyone can help me out that would be great!

No news photos published within the last forty years are going to be public domain, except under some very unusual circumstances. For older stuff, try the Library of Congress and the New York Public Library Digital Gallery.

I think that the images here are public domain-ish. There are a lot at commons.wikimedia.org that certainly are; and when you're looking there, check the sources of the photos you look at. A lot of them come from government agencies, which give most, if not all, of their photos away under as public-domain.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm pretty sure that works are only public domain 50 years after the creator has died.

Typically, no photo, or artwork for that matter, will be public domain for many years after its creation. Copyright used to expire a number of years after the creators death. I don't know where that lies anymore, with the estates being able to retain copyright (which was never the intention of the law), it just gets ugly.

That said, there are royalty free image available. Some work on a subscription basis. There are a couple of good ones that offer free copyright and royalty free images. The first is http://www.gimp-savvy.com, which has acres of free to use images. The second is http://sxc.hu which is a community of artists and photographers providing images for artistic use.

    Good luck!
