My first digital art sketchbook (now with traditional stuff)

Hey, I've been drawing for quite a while but have only just decided to branch out seriously into the digital art area. I have also begun working on a project which is basically the creation of an alien race yet to be named, but they're evil, industrial and I generally stick to monotone colour schemes when drawing them.

The following images are in chronological order of creation, so the first two were done around the same time, using black and white and the translusancy tool for blending. The third image however was a test, and uses Black, white and grey which I used at the suggestion of someone on Deviantart and I feel it gives a cleaner more solid look. The final image was a concept for the colonies of the race.

You'll probably comment on the amount of smoke I use, but although I could probably cut back I think its important for the feel of the race since they have polluted their planet beyond reconcile and so I imaging lots of machines and stuff giving off fumes.

Anyway I'm looking for advice on both concept and Technique...especially technique! I'll be updating this as I churn out more images and tests.

    Profiles

This is a front and side shot of the head, not essencial but might come in use for reference later on. Plus it was good practice for profiles, which I usually suck at.

hello! interesting concepts you have here!
i'll comment on the smoke, but not about how much there is (perfectly fine in my opinion.) i'd love to see some more variety in the smoke, there are plenty of awesome cloud and grunge brushes you can download for free, and they could help. even without pen pressure, try adjusting the sizes of the brush or painting over some strokes to make the strokes look less unifom.
for the second to last cg (with the reddish bg and lots of black smoke), try using some other colors instead of just black. some ashy reds, especially if theres some light filtering through, might help out with the depth and overall atmosphere.
even if you're going for a monochromatic b/w feel for the sake of your characters, i think it might be cool to try overlaying a few colors to help out the mood and depth. just play around!
great sb so far, keep us updated!

I'm definately going to be playing around with smoke techniques alot, I'm not quite sure what you mean by variety...variety in shape, colour? could you elaborate a bit...its probably painfully obvious, but you have keep things simple round me lol

Also I'll try and add some more variation to colours in the Colony piece, and I'll probably re-submit it in a few days.

    Thanks for the comments!

    Creator Mk2

This is a redesign of the Creator, or the builder...I haven't done the manequin yet, but I I'll update when I've done it.

This is just a quick sketch I threw together in 20 minutes or so...by no means the best thing ever, but I might tidy it up at some point

    Lurker

What started out as an attempt at drawing "The Darkness" from the game of the same name, turned into some kind of lurking horror...although not the most complex piece in the world I like this piece in its own special way

    Crits as per usual?

It's a little blurry can I can't tell as to what it is, besides some eyes and blody teeth. sometimes fear is created from knowing, and not the unkown , try that next time.

Ok here are a couple more bits and pieces, the first is a few sketches just messing about really, the second is a kind of rip off of that giant sand worm thing that I think is from Dune, but I decided my aliens needed them on their planet

Crits and comments as per usual...

Your drawings make me smile! They are very expressive and animated. I like your smooth, minimal use of lines. It makes your drawings look very sharp.

Very nice job. Keep it up!
