it's the control center for a terra-forming project on a world with liquid water, but a poisonous green atmosphere.

    Hideyoshi

The Command Center of the Zebnoid planetary outpost on Xantra 4, a high-tech facility equipped with a beam transfusion emmiter (BTE) that can manifest Supracyan cartography.
Planetary exploration has begun on the Zebnoid rim upon Admiral Leetwand’s command since the eradication of Halomonia in 2078.

    Shardana

this command center its a strong, fully functional, compact, prebuilt unit designed to get dropped off a mothership to the surface of a planet.

    Coldrum

A scout ship has been sent to a remote Exploration base nestled deep in the Rambarl swamps of Condalore. It has been years since a muffled recorded SOS message was decoded. The distress call has finally been identified but the cause is yet to be uncovered. What evil awaits?

    Dragon4lunch

Mars outpost. Terraforming is under way. Jim has a very lonely job, overseeing the system on this large, and very empty space station on Mars.

    Grenogs

Primas 9 was at first concidered just an ice planet with very little life on it and for the first 50 years only the surface was slightly explored by pilgrims looking for the new world.. It wasn't until the mining companies moved in that we realized that there was actualy a whole new world underneath the ice, an aquatic world that is. Then the real great discoveries started to happen, sea life which had never even been imagined before and lost civilisations that had disappeared a millenia ago long before humans had even learnt to fly back home on earth.

Mirsky and Lainer would go ahead and inspect the nearby ecoi while waiting for the three new guys to stop bickering with the team at the base control centre on why they get sent out so early each day. However, this days argument Mirsky would never forget, as that morning something went horribly horribly wrong..."

It's been 2 months since the last recon mission to the planet surface. No contact can be established with the crew...

    Silikone

a lonely place for humans was that dim control center on IO. they setup the outpost on the recently (within the last 500 years) terraformed moon of Jupiter to study the omnivorous plants that thrived there in recent decades. they consumed most of the organic matter that evolved on that little planet, including their own kind, which seemed to populate an area quite rapidly. the plants intrigued the scientists as a possible source of bio-fuel. the scientists intrigued the plants as well, also as a source of bio fuel.

Huh, still no comments? My screen is acting up (my new graphics card is on its way though) and therefore I can't really see and thus crit the images too well. There sure have been some nice entries this round! I'm glad to have participated, I learned a thing or two about reflections. And besides, a lot of it improvement is about mileage. Let me know what you think, so that I know how I can ever defeat a friggin' beauty of a piece like warmscotch's. - eh, I mean coldrum's :p You rock by the way!

Rock on peeps, now give us some crits!

Voted Silikone... great atmosphere in this. A simple concept with a dream like feel to it. I'm wondering if much can be seen from those giant windows... the plants are cool... creepy

Yadam - Nice render but I felt it seemed a little large... like a massive corporation rather than an exploration center. The observers view seems a little blocked? I made a similar mistake with mine I think.

Mr.Smith - Maybe a little flat and busy... the red looks good but seems a little much. Also, there are some conflicting lines in there. A slight variation from your perspective lines can be distracting. Still a cool image tho

Grenogs - You have some major scale going on here ; ) the image has some perspective issues and your concept seems a little eclectic. Some shades of the magenta you have at the bottom would work well in the background sky to give more atmosphere.

Dragon4lunch - I really like this image... has a great mood to it and a nice concept, composition etc. Keep an eye on your perspective tho... it can ruin an image so easliy. Cool colours inside would have helped the portrayal of lonelyness.

Shardana - Another really cool concept. You nailed the remoteness of this. I would have liked to see this rendered a little further as it is a good composition.

Hideyoshi - Really nice image... almost voted for it but you cant vote for more than one. reminds me a lot of Fengs work. Maybe a little too many angles in there and the perspective seems a little too forced.

Notspecialist - No crit for this really other than it could do with some finishing... hints of object details and lights would add to it... It kind of looks more like an apartment complex rather than a Command centre because of this.

Hope these crits are of some help... my 2 cents ; ) No pain no gain

thanks for comments coldrum, much appretiated. but your opinion is slightly flawed, i didnt put any atmosphere into the sky background becouse it isnt a sky, it is in fact underwater, hence the sub in the far right.

coldrum you are dominating this round - mad props to you!

Hey people, let me know what works and doesn't work about my piece. I need to know, since I did spend... I don't know, maybe as much as 20 hours on it, I need to know how to do make it sweet. Or at least know if it's a wreck

dragon4lunch: Your work rocks and reflection on floor is just perfect also like lights and overall mood. I guess it's exactly what chaos wanted to see. But coldrum was bit better so my vote goes to him this round. Unfortunately its not multiply choice poll….

nice work coldrum. it looks like you put a lot of work into this environment. i really like the attention to detail - like the lifts that go down to the landing pad and beyond, and the flying critters. great texture and atmosphere. the place really feels alive. my one comment would be where the focus of the piece is. my eye continually gets drawn to the hotspot just to the upper right of where the ship is landing...where the small bidlike creatures are. where the transition from almost white to near black happens very suddenly. my eye is led right out of the illustration by the slope of the structure there. step back a few feet and blur your eyes, and see if that area sticks out above all else for you. this is a great illustration. it's worth spending a littel xtra time on it i think & adjust the levels in that area. nice work everyone.

This was a close call, personally, 'cause they're all great images. I eventually decided to go for Coldrum, 'cause something about it pulled me in more than the others.

Everybody produced nice work here, so well done.

coldrum: Thanks for the crit. I don't really see a perspective problem, may be due to the old "been-looking-at-it-for-too-long"-syndrome. Is there a specific element you can point to that has the problem?

Manny: Thanks man, I'm very glad you like it! I voted for coldrum too, so that's fine I wish I could get a couple more votes though - otherwise I don't know if my piece is good enough to be put on my website...

dragon4lunch I dont think its so much your perspective thats the problem, but i do see one area that i think throws the perspective out. The steps on the left side going around a corner: The top of the steps are slanting slightly becouse their going around a bend. They shouldn't do so, They should still be horizontaly level. Have a look at architectural designs or even better still, look at designs done by leonardo da vinji, then you should have an even better understanding of what i mean.

dragon4lunch, use the 'flip horizontal' command in photoshop. then you instantly see what grenogs means. my vote went to yadam nice style!

Gave it to coldrum in the end, athough the perspective issues were bothering me quite a bit I must admit...
I still saw you put in a lot of work and the mood really sells the image.

Close 2nd were yAdam and sillikone.

grenogs - LOL I see it now... very cool

Sillikone - Thanks for finding that, I'll have a go at fixing it before I add it to my website : )

dragon4lunch - grenogs picked what I was talking about... theres a few strange things happening in that area. Mainly the steps being warped but also the path that extends from them seems out of perspective (seen through the window) Still a nice painting though.

Hideyoshi - Thanks... i made the mistake of having an odd shaped room to the right there... it's not actually a rectangle but more of a pentagon, which makes the closest wall seem like its not in perspective... so if it looks wrong, it's wrong.. even if its right if you get my meaning. I'll give correcting this a go as well. Cheers!

Coldrum: Yeah, I sure know about the room to the right not being rectangular. I already figured that.
And still it's not correct, because it's not lining up with the horizon.
There are some other minor issues as well. Would you mind a rough overpaint? Say no if you don't - by all means! I don't want to offend! That's why I am asking first...

Eeeek, didn't know you couldn't use the attachments >_<

I think coldrums is the best one over all (even with the perspective/composition issues), hideyoshi has some great perspective in his just not enough exploration of planet happening.

    coldrum: there you go!

I drew green lines over the areas that seemed to converge in one VP and thus marked the spot you had initially chosen. Orange lines indicate slight disalignments and the red lines spot areas that are off perspective.
Especially the building on the right needed fixing, basically all the areas that had angles and weren't parallel to the green lines.
All the lines that converge somewhere ON the horizon line (HL) are completely straight when viewed perfectly at the height of the HL. However, all lines that meet at a VP above or under the HL are angled. That wasn't the case in your image unless you wanted the tower to be bent.
The red line to the left above the HL was just a tad too angled as it was very close to the HL. The red line next beneath it (still left) aligned with the extending green line in your image, but since it's marking an angle in the building it needed to look different as well.

My overpaint was eyeballed, there could still be some minor issues, but I tried to convey the general direction of how it needs to look correctly. I only corrected the red-arrowed areas btw...

I hope I could help! Any questions, please ask!

Hideyoshi - Nice one! It's pretty close to what I had changed ... I should have checked my perspective before I started painting.... BAH! I eyeballed a bit more than I should have on this one. Thanks for the help! : )

Ha, Hideyoshi has a good eye for noticing perspective problems. I didn't see any perspective problems until he mentioned it. Anyway, coldrum you knocked it out of the park with or without those issues! 44 votes already... I have one. Yikes. I hope that doesn't mean my piece is of amateurish quality...

Hey your not the only one, i guess it just proves one thing, Even when something is wrong, it can still be right. And after all, isn't art just one big illusion.
