    Assassin's Creed concepts

    Hi everyone !

At last (after 1.5 year) i can post the work i did during my short period of time on assassins creed at ubisoft. Vyle , baron , sparth and simonak did a nice bunch of concepts for this game !

It was a nice project , plus i really like the medevial crusades mood !

now im working on far cry 2 (since 1 year) so more concepts soon !

The cathedral is incredible... I'm looking forward to performing death defying leaps and jumps around that structure.

    Wow monumental works here! Great.
When you talk about FarCry2 you mean Crysis? FarCry is the only game I played (exept MAME off course ;-]) and I still play some time.

No he does mean Farcry 2 , recently announced but obviously has been a while in development.
The pictures re stunning btw, really digging the amount of detail going into even the smallest things, and love the worn feel of the city.

yep its far cry 2 , the challenger of crysis

officially announced last week : http://farcry.us.ubi.com/teaser/

For the assassins pictures , yes i used 3dsmax for basic shapes , its always nice when u need to do multiple view of a same complex object or environment.
btw i dont use photo , just sometimes textures and many complex brushes.
    Thanks again !

Interesting games need solid concept art

Very nice work: details colors & stuff... But i'm curious 'bout the technical background: what application did you used? Maya? 3Dmax+VRAY? 'cause i'm only sure for the photoshop How long does it take to create such a cathedral - from simple 3dblocks through rendering to final paintover?

Cheers and i'd be looking for more stuff!!!

The perspective in the last 2 are not so great at some parts. But why should I say that, these are awesome pictures.

Your style is very natural, I love it. 1 of many possible questions. Do you use any 3D application to find the right perspective for all major objects in the scene, or a photograph? Or is it just guess work (i.e. lay down a horizon line and do things manually). And also the textures are varied, for this I guess you are using existing textured photographs (soil, bark, rust etc) and then overlaying it on top of your drawings, is this right?

    Thanks!! And great paintings!

Yep Heres my step in a concept production

1st day : * collecting references (textures , architecture photos , historic description, mood refs : sky , movies screenshots (like kingdom of heaven) )
Collecting refs is really important , because this step gives you a lot of ideas : composition, lighting , gameplay etc.

    * Quick sketches : black and white or colors speed painting to establish the composition --> at the end of the day the artistic director will chose one.

2nd day : Im starting to work with 3ds max , with basic 3d shapes , sometimes i spend more times on a specific complex object. Im taking my time , because 3dsmax allow me to work the composition (with the camera placement) and the lighting (i like vrays for this part)

3rd day : Im working on the render in photoshop ,the good thing with a render is that you get an alpha layer of your shapes so u can work with selections.
Im working with textures overlay , brushes but no photos elements.
Its a good thing to be precise in this kind of pictures , because level artists ask for this kind of precision : in the texture , the shapes and idea of gameplay. They dont want to spend their time to understand what is what in your picture.
In fact we are level artists , but without all the constraints and the debug

Sometimes i need a 4th day , some change coming from the artistic director , and sometimes your picture needs more polish ( color mood , extra details etc)

But it depends of the project

Yes, I agree with Feerik, I had seen some stuff you did on farcry just before I left Montreal, and it was even better. Amazing progression.
I miss you a lot man, I send you some Scorp vibes

I can't wait for this game. Great concepts too, the team did really well with what you created. It's one of the first cities I've seen in games that feels alive. Great stuff.
