Today was a good day. I asked a couple of my friends to provide me with photos so I can start doing some oil painting, and they did. I reside at the bottom right corner... More tomorrow.

    ImaGEEnation: Thanks man. I'm non-stop!

I finished up that skull study in zbrush, and did a face muscle sketch also. I'm still a nub to zbrush, but I really enjoy using it. There's some face sketches too. The next couple weeks will be focused on torso anatomies and studies, and more zbrushing. July 8th I start an oil painting class for portraits, so stoked about that. Crits appreciated. I crit back. Cheers.

    Nice 3d skull!
I'd love to see how that's done.

Vorp: Thanks man; its just some quick ZBrushing. I'll show you next time I bring my laptop to the SG.

    Peetaer: Thanks much!

Todays update: Its been pointed out that I need to focus on form before engaging anatomy, so I've been studying that a bit, some of is below. Lots of Bridgman will be coming up shortly, I'll be working on that most of the weekend.

I'm using photos for reference for the time being. Next time I'm out I'll hit up some life draws. I watched AvPR tonight and had a bit of inspiration.

Started reading up on Reilly too, more to come of that later.

    TWO YEARS OLD!!!

I've got 25 months left in the military, plenty of time to get where I need to be with all of this. As usual, crits welcome. I crit back.

    purb36: Thanks Aaron!

Below are the first two oil paintings from a oil portrait class I'm taking; I'll be doing two more plus 'homework' exercises before the end of the month. A couple sketches from the SB, and the next entry in a side project I'm doing with my cousin (jhralaproject.blogspot.com). Its a mix of poetry and art.

    Cheers

Here are the last two oil paintings from the class I was in, along with a a couple creature designs. I'm going to be doing a 2d piece for the ComicCon Challenge, I'll post that after I submit.

yo man, some really nice colors in these pictures. how do you like working in oils? gonna keep up with it?

keep working the form. some things are still looking flat. the transition between light and dark should be highly saturated and dark, in most cases.

    see you sometime soon?

    @RainShinobi
: No prob on the double-post; I am usually just using a clutch pencil with HB or B lead. Thanks for stopping by!

please, would you give me some tips on how to improve my anatomy skills, maybe books? as well as facial features from humans to creatures? any ideas?
i also need a book which focuses on perspectives and/or landscapes, do you know of any decent ones which break the steps down, one by one?
    thanks alot,
    Drew

And, another post! Here's a couple more oil portraits, and the new illustration from the project my cousin and I are working on (from further on referenced to as JHP). Feel free to check it out in its entirety here.

My copy of 'Alla Prima' came in the mail, lots to get from that. Been reading it when I can. Heading off to South Carolina for eight weeks of Army leadership training. Can't take the easel, but I'll have my tabletPC. Priorities you know. Twenty three more months of military, must level up. Please crit. Thanks for stopping by!

Drew Sheridan: Hey, thanks for props! Um, the books I recommend are 'The Human Machine', 'Constructive Anatomy' and 'Life Drawing' all by George Bridgman. Also, Harold Speeds 'The Practice and Science of Drawing' is amazing. Start with those.

@ jatherip: Thanks for stopping by. I'll make sure to keep an eye on ears.
@ Jabo: Thanks man; don't worry, more is on the way!

Apologies for the lack of posting. I have plenty to scan when I make it back to my apartment. I've been at an Army leadership course for the past two months, drawing and studying whenever possible. I'll be back home in two weeks, but for the meantime, here's are thumbs from an assignment that the Boston 'Splinter Cell 36' Sketch Group came up with. I spent ten minutes on each. The first column has variations in climate (Rainy, Tropical, Arctic). Column two has variations in mood (Gloomy, Bright, Dangerous), and column three has variations in time of day (Evening, Afternoon, Morning).

Crits welcome, I'll have more up in a couple weeks.

Gah. Its been way too long since I had a sketchbook update (military stuffs for the past two months been getting in the way). Here's what I was working on during said time. Doing more value studies soon, and now that I'm back home and have full access to my supplies, it'll be hella better. Guaranteed. I've been doing lots of Bridgman studies, and I'll be studying a form/rendering book starting Monday. I have a broadsword that is calling out for a Barque study.

Below, various anatomy studies, a value study of white on white (done in a SB, wasn't @ home when I did it), self portrait from the self-portrait day and some alien thing I sketched up last night.

Gotta make the most of whats around when you aren't around the ideal.

Nice update! Your pencil work is getting a lot tighter and the forms are becoming much more solid! All that studying is really paying off. Can't wait to tag up with you guys again at the sketch group. Until then, keep up the good work!

A two hour study in graphite, done at the Sprinkler Factory Atelier in Worcester, MA. After studying Bridgman's books so much, blocking in is getting easier, and more importantly, more accurate.

Another from the Sprinkler Factory Atelier. I found out one of the local colleges has a gesture night, I'll be doing that on a regular basis once it starts back up. I've got a few SB pages to upload this weekend.

Lack of posting = busy. Here's the latest entry for the JHP (side project with my writer-cousin; JHralaProject.com). I'll be blasting out some anat studies this week; and then work on some more form stuff. Lots of reading, Creative Illustration, and finishing up my Bridgman trifecta (which I'm slacking terribly on). I went and typed up all of my 'to-do' requirements to get myself in order to land work once I get out of the Army (1.5 years to go), didn't realize how much there was! haha.

Studying. And lots of it. Here are some long studies, and a page of gestures from a local life drawing session I only recently found out about. They shut down in May (sadface), but it will start back up this summer. There's a sheet of silhouettes too, I'm going to do more of those, they help tremendously with idea generation. My cousin and I are working on a story also, one of the character images is below. More information on that can be found on www.jhralaproject.com. I'll try to be more frequent with posts, esp since the summer is coming up, and I'll be starting some cast studies, and game art stuff.

ALSO, I have three shows coming up that I have to get work put together for. More on that later, but they involve a long study, a skateboard, and a pin-up, respectively. I'm stoked.

    Cheers!

I started a cast study the other day. Going to take my time with it, but should be done in a couple of weeks. Also, here's a concept sheet another creature in the story I'm working out with my writer-cousin.
