cover(+step by step), caricatures etc. +random ork 30/07
hi folk, man this takes quite some courage for a noob like me to post among the quality stuff that is floating around these days...then again, it is always an inspiration and orientation, have a long road ahead
this is not up to the bar, but you have to start somewhere, right?
right, the stuff I´m showing here was for a larger project, our school´s so called "Abitzeitung", basically a magazine for the guys that graduated this year from our high-school. normally, there aren´t any illustrations in these, but I saw a chance of finally getting some work out(even if it´s mainly for the parents and grands, you know ) and got into gear.
it was a long time project, started rather small, I planned to invest 10min per caricature, which proofed to be fantastically foolish. In retrospective, I spend a sum of nearly 300 hours on the caricatures and under 20 for the cover.
I learned a ton, so it was great for me. my claims always leveled up when I finished around 20 portraits, so I revised some around 5 times(they started really like crap, if I find some beginnings I might show them )
the rest is some fun on 4 of the caricatures and a pseudo t-shirt design I had some fun with(scanned drawing + ps-luv), and a personal piece for an exhibition.
ahhh...forgot, just because I´m such a nerd I did some robuts after IDIOT APATHY, who inspired me heaps, and they ARE fun to do hehe
sooo, enough rambling, on to the art, comments and crits are highly welcome
//ehh, how do I change the sequence of attached images? or do I have to consider this before uploading? arg

Darkside, your caricatures are great! Lots of 'em too! Each one easily identifiable as an individual. Very expressive and clearly demonstrates your talent. I tell ya what I don't see, which is equally demonstrative of talent... is HANDS!!
I want you to go buy Bridgman's book of 100 hands and copy the ENTIRE book into your notebooks. Then draw as many pairs of hands as you have faces here. How's that for a task!!
The thing is, the Head and the hands are the most expressive and complicated shit on the planet. (Well, the body too) Once you get them down, you KNOW you can do anything else. Natch? But start with the hands!

sorry folks, i'm in a hurry here, so i'll keep this in german:

oh you damn...
Just wow, you are really great for your age, makes me sad that i am 2 long years older than you.
Well the charicatures are fanatastic, remains me a lot to Robolus work!
Very clean work, what me really bothers is the clouds and the moon in the "Angel rising baby falling" painting, it looks so beginner-like and kills the whole painting for me.
Just another thing is the last work you posted, try to integrate the background with the character, and try to give him some more emotion.
PS: hast du schon einen Studienplatz, oder darfst du jetzt erst zu Bundeswehr bzw. Zivi machen?
August 4th, 2007 #19
colrouphobic: thx man
xaya: wow, now that´s an eye opener I didn´t even consider the clouds in the angel piece, fuck. ok I´ll go over it again, thanks for that.
and your right with the bg, I´m really bad and uncreative when it comes to finding a harmonizing element there
robulus sure was an inspiration to start doing caricatures, if you look at his blog you´ll see me being caricatured there you go
I heard from Rob that you spend some hours talking to him? he´s a great guy to learn from, isnt´he? hehe
I´m starting my zivi these days, but ´am as good as safely enrolled in the Rhein-Sieg Akademie ( www.rsak.de)

hey darkside, thanks for dropping by my little sketchbook. your stuff is really strong, amazing, you just finished school? woa.
i can't remember your nickname or face, regarding cologne, help me out a bit, man.

The simple linework caricatures look fantastic.
Plus, great dedication - 300 hours is a damn long time.

Terrific stuff. Those caricatures are particularly fantastic. Nice job!
August 6th, 2007 #23
the cover is a bit weak on the typo and color choice side but these things come with time.
i would not advice going to the Rhein-Sieg Akademie, two lady friends of mine were really unhappy there.
its true that someone with your talent and work ethic is able to survive everywhere.. but rsak is not a good choice i think.

excellent work man, really cool caricatures (and tons of 'em too!), all very expressive and well done...did you learn with practice or learned caricatures with a book or something? just wondering
In pic no1, i really love the colors, but the font doesn't convince me, as well as the lower car, it looks in a "stiff" perspective, if you know what i mean.It actually looks the more "grounded" instead than the flying one, imho.
The angel is cool (nice new avatar btw ) nice work on the ork too, very cool skin and muscles, not entirely convinced with the whole random bg, and the hands.
keep sharing man, you are kicking some ass

The car painting is fresh and interesting.
However, there are two things I think that are ruining it.
The type is very intrusive, and then the cornered lines at the bottom left are constricting what is otherwise an 'open' composition.
Just my opinion, though.
