Chicago - for real this time!
Seriously where the hell are all you guys! I started a new thread because alot of the people in the older one dont even come around, nor live here anymore. So who's down for getting together and sharing ideas ect..... I'll have a look around to see where we could get together and find some cheap life drawing sessions in the area.

Maybe we can finally do this. I was trying to raise awareness of the lack of CA brotherhood in the chicago area. The pallette and chisel just raised their prices i think but they sell 10 life drawing passes for $85 i believe. i think theyre in the river north area. ill have to investigate cheaper alternatives or if what i wrote is even true. Come on everybody i know you dont have enough weirdos to hang out with.

Chicagoland unite like Voltron
Northwest suburbs here. Haven't really looked into joining in a group sketch thing since I have just got back into drawing on a regular basis. I wanted to get my skills up some more but whathahell- let's put in some work.

I'll go where the action is- I just need some notice prior. I work in the far far far north suburbs (closer to Wisconsin than Chicago) so I would drive or catch the metra into the city on weeknites. Should be able to work it out though.

My schedule is basically wide open. Whenever you guys are free, i will most likely have nothing important going on so its really whatever for me. Just give me a couple of days notice and i should be good.

I'm in Addison. Half hour from the city, lets do this.

I currently live in Knoxville TN, however my husband will hopefully be able to accept a job in Chicago in the next couple of months and we will be relocating there. I have already looked at SORA and at the palette and chisel art schools. I am really excited and I would love to be a part of what you guys are doing, it just may be a little while.

I really hope that works out for you guys, i mean the rejoicing. Only partially for selfish see-you-in-a-couple-of-months sketch group reasons.
Whats everybody else doing this weekend?
July 22nd, 2007 #12
Sorry- Bad weekend. Harry Potter weekend and I am the only muggle in the household. So I got babysitting duty.
So what are you all wanna do?

So I've found something for us to do, at least once a month if you're interested in life drawing. The Brimstone Drawing club. http://www.myspace.com/brimstonedrawingclub
They meet once a month. It started up in July, and I've been to the 2 sessions they have. It's $10 per session with room to comfortably fit about 30 artists. Each session has 2 models, 1 pin-up and 1 alt model. It's about a block and a half east from the Belmont L stop in the city. They haven't announced when their September session is going to be but I imagine sometime towards the end of the month. The way I found out about it is through my school (The American Academy of Art). One of the life drawing models, her husband, and some other alumni of the school organized it. Thus far the models have been a great pleasure to work with. When school starts up again in a couple weeks I'm going to scan some of the drawings, so be on the look out.
Interested? I hope so.

I work in the city on Mondays and Wednesdays, so those evenings around 6-7if anyone wants to meet up somewhere to sketch....well we should meet at a coffeehouse or park or something.
August 28th, 2007 #16
Mondays or Wednesdays sound good for me. PM me where you wanna meet up.
August 28th, 2007 #17
Yes, somewhere public
For real though i hope we can get this off the ground. I do believe i can make it to... wherever. Maybe before then i can post some stuff on this account so you guys can see i really do draw.

I think you're forgetting Monday's a holiday. That aside, Mondays and Wednesdays are cool for me. My school is in the south loop by Michigan & Van Buren. I'm usually down in that neck of the woods until at least 3:00pm when I don't have work. I live on the north side of the city.

Thats fine with me. im not sure where everyone would like to meet but, like i said, it would be great if i could get there from the train without too much trouble. i dont mind a little walk but id rather not have to get on a bus. That said, i really hope this thing goes off.
September 10th, 2007 #26
OK, so I'm busy Tuesday, so we'll make a new plan I suppose.
September 14th, 2007 #27
haha why is this always so hard
September 17th, 2007 #28
Damn i missed the Brimstone session. I didnt think it would come so soon. Did anybody make it?
September 19th, 2007 #29
i grew up in aurora, went to uiuc and all, but i live in California now. when i come home for the holidays, i still head into the palette and chisel. the right thing to do if you plan on staying in chicago or IL is to save your money and get the year's membership. then everything is free and you have access to the sunday members-only sessions.
a good way to start the new year is to go to their 10-hour drawing marathon on Jan 1st. no better way to start keeping your resolutions, you know.
anyway, i'm biased in my experiences in IL. out here, i studied with some of the best in the business. Mark Westermoe, Mike Butkus (you really need to check out http://www.mikebutkus.net Star Wars, Harry Potter, you name it there's about a 33% chance that he worked on it. i see him doing sketches for about 3 movies per week, dvd boxes, video game boxes, double page ads, etc. saw the original robocop poster in his studio too.) Nathan Fowkes (dreamworks), etc. etc. etc. After what I've seen out here though, I'm not super-impressed with the educational opportunities in Chicago. So I prefer LA for the education and level of ambition, but I prefer Chicago for the human stuff. it's more laid back.
Anyway, my advice to any aspiring professionals out there is to become a member at the P&C. Go every day for a good six months. Then worry about finding a good school or whatever. Don't waste your time finding the perfect teacher if you haven't paid your dues first. I know this from experience, and I see a ton of poor art students out here making no progress because they just don't put in the drawing mileage.
Besides, LA doesn't have shit as far as a downtown. don't even get me started about how much i hate the Lakers.

it's dusty in here...
i'm gonna be up there later this month into early november and will be wanting to sketch with some of y'all if that's a possibility. i don't know anything bout chicago (although i've been there a few times), and i'll also be pretty occupied with work which i'm up there for. of course i'll fill you in on dates, etc. closer to time. I'd be interested in sketching at the field museum (i love the field museum) or perhaps at the art institute. anywhere there're lots of people would be sweet as well.
"your welcome" for bumping/saving your thread...
