    T. Ferguson's sketchbook - please offer critique

    Hi everyone,

After drooling over all the cool art in these forums, and now that I finally have some time (and tools) to do some artwork, I'm going to try posting my stuff here. I have no formal art education beyond high school, and thus would greatly appreciate any tips/comments and criticisms that you may offer. I've always enoyed drawing, but in my childhood this was limited to sketching comic book characters with pens. Now, I've got different tastes, and I'm trying to mature in my style and technique, as well. For now, I'm doing photo studies, and hope to start doing life studies in the fall, when I get more comfortable.

Here goes - Peter Sarsgaard, from photo ref, using Painter and Intuos. All criticism appreciated!

    Not bad...

You have some definite skills with a tablet. I like the looseness of the paintings that you've put here... it forces the eye to blend the colors together, giving the mind something to do... Anatomically solid pics too...

One small note to point out on the first painting is that the nose appears flat, perhaps from too many light sources in the original pic... A suggestion is to use (or find reference with) a single light source... this will help develop the form a bit better. This can be seen of your second painting, which I think is excelently done...

The third one is good... I would suggest adding some back light to some of the edges to display some of the ambient light...

Keep on drawing man, I'd like to see some analog pics too...

i like the expression on the saarsgard one, and also on the last one.

    here's my advice:
start using bigger brushes--your form modelling doesn't have to look all cross-hatched or stringy. ideally, you should use a brush bigger than what you what to paint. that way you will be forced to put down the bigger shapes first and cut back and forth to get the shape you want. very important difference between line drawing and painting.

think massive, blocky bold shapes. understand that you can design your shadow shapes to make your pictures more interesting. don't settle for something that's just about right--design it with the intention of getting the most bang for your buck out of it.

    hope this helps,
    chris

Thanks for all the replies so far. Here are a couple soccer-theme photo reference drawings I've done. Again, any suggestions or criticisms very welcome!

    Men in Black

Thanks, Dreamworker - I'm looking forward to checking out your gallery first thing tomorrow. Here's one I just finished - Men in Black. Most likely conspiring.

can't say nothing, all your stuff looks realistic but/and vivid, i like the girl from the angels in america studies
and the men in black thing, whou, confusing at first glance, then it's all so smoky, and some figures/hands you dont see until you take a closer look O_O interesting

    Face of War

Here's one from a powerful photo I found - the face of war. I've never painted an African face before, and the color composition of the skin was certainly a revelation to me.

Awesome start. MIB and Face of War are both great. Don't have a tablet myself so can't offer much advice. Looks like you're already headed the right way anyhow. I would like to see some pencils or inks, though.

    Watch out for Piranhas

My favorites so far are that african one and the MiB. Good color selection and proportions all around.

Portraits can get kinda blah in general as a lot of people do them, so if you want to distinguish yourself, choose some more 'powerful' ones like the african. And stay far away from the ''hey i have a camera, *smile, *flash'' [last one of ur friend].

Thanks for the feedback, Joatley. Here's one that I find a bit more interesting (although I think the background is a bit blah - may work on it some more) - all credit to Lmajali at DeviantArt, whose amazing photo was the basis for this pic.

Here's a new one, of Didier Drogba of Chelsea FC, celebrating a goal (based on photo ref). All criticism welcome!
