- Summer Plague is the name of the creature, which is part of a species
- No individuals, shapeless shadows, viruses etc
- For this one a concpet text is required
Maybe I'll revive the cicada plague idea.
oooh, Nice concept this week, and I caught it early. 8) I hope I can get something in.
"Summer Plague is the name of the creature, which is part of a species"
So the species itself isn't named "summer plague," just one creature of the species [ ? ]
This one confuses me a bit...so can the creature be an annoying pestilence like a plague, or does it actually spread the plague...?
1. an epidemic disease that causes high mortality; pestilence.
2. an infectious, epidemic disease caused by a bacterium, Yersinia pestis, characterized by fever, chills, and prostration, transmitted to humans from rats by means of the bites of fleas. Compare bubonic plague, pneumonic plague, septicemic plague.
3. any widespread affliction, calamity, or evil, esp. one regarded as a direct punishment by God: a plague of war and desolation.
4. any cause of trouble, annoyance, or vexation: Uninvited guests are a plague.
–verb (used with object)
5. to trouble, annoy, or torment in any manner: The question of his future plagues him with doubt.
6. to annoy, bother, or pester: Ants plagued the picnickers.
7. to smite with a plague, pestilence, death, etc.; scourge: those whom the gods had plagued.
8. to infect with a plague; cause an epidemic in or among: diseases that still plague the natives of Ethiopia.
9. to afflict with any evil: He was plagued by allergies all his life.
Sorry if I'm nitpicking. My mind's just gone blank on this one
Try always to [ i m p r o v e. ]
I promise the ambulatory carnivorous daisy won't be my final. I'm leaning towards the hot-air jellies. Or maybe I'll come up with something a little more original . . .
I've got a few ideas, hopefully I can be in this one... I'll be gone from tommarrow til the next sunday so I'm not really going to have any time.
The head of the beast:

Here's a rough idea:
Every summer, hundreds of the "Tourist Birds" descend upon small beach towns; germ-filled and disease ridden from their constant travel to the hottest beaches all over the world, they drive townies to madness and death. So much so, in fact, that those living in these towns on a day-to-day basis have started setting up chintzy, tacky false communities a suitable distance from the real dwellings. These fake towns are known as "tourist traps."
There'll be color soon. Maybe tomorrow if nothing comes up.
A VERY rough color version. I need sleep, so no highlights, shadow or contour other than the original pencils.

When I saw this theme, right away I thought of those blasted Ice Cream Trucks!! Dam Them, They are the summer plague!; Although I am sometimes a victim! Anyway, so I had to make a monster like this ice cream truck, and soo far the line art is going nicely, but now for the background and composition and then painting .
Heres the Creatures description:
Every 20 years in the summer, this creature arises from the earth, since it lives in the soil, it is pale skinned and looks like an Ice cream truck(Shape-wise). it slumbers for over 20 years, so when it arises hes pretty darn hungry. it tends to feast on anything from deer to rats to humans, whatever it can get its tentacles on, but his favorite eat is human children. their skin still vibrant of life, their bones so crunchy and soft unlike the adult hard and dull tasting, their internal organs so juicy and rich in flavor....( )....well you get the point. It uses 4 main features: its tentacles to capture its prey, and can hide them and even make their tentacles look like a car grill. It also has its body shape and skin color, which makes it look practically harmless and even attractive, luring its prey. The third feature is its cone shaped sensor on top of its body, its not only acts as its ear and senses life around, but can be mistaken by innocent children as an ice cream cone. Its 4th feature is that it makes a beautiful sound thus adding to its "innocuous" nature; this sound is sometimes mistaken as a new tune of ice cream trucks.(Thanks to Nickzorn for idea, thanks man!!). Well... thats the description of the beast, now onto painting.
Almost forgot, heres the image:
Edit: Update, Put some color on it, this is not final.

Hard topic, lets see if I have something to think about. xD
This concept is really vague, can someone please clarify more?
So its not an entire plague? just one creature?
I think I need alil more information before I can enter.
SORRY FOR THE LONG DESCRIPTION! i really got into it this time....
this creature is called the "parachute fly" due to the shape of its body. the concave structure of its body causes air to push the creature around as if it was flying (but in reality it has no wings). its tail (contains its vital organs) is used like a rutter for boats. it swings it left to right to pull the weight of the body in the direction it wishes to go.
the fly is also known as a "summer swarm" because it must absorb chlorofluorocarbon to live, which is found in air conditioning units from cars to homes. this is when the plague begins, since there is so much air conditioning in the summer, they follow the wind currents to the origin and nest inside of it. when the airconditioning unit is turned on, all of the flies are blown out of
the vents, into the room.
since their body is virtually weightless, it follows the direciton of the air.
the parachute fly is harmless. but when they fly in packs of approximatly a few million, thats where the trouble starts.
when in his car, this human
seems to be getting attacked, but actually he is panicking, which increases his breathing, which directs the flow of air towards
his nose and mouth causing asphixiation. if he simply held his breath, the parachute flies will slowly settle.
done with markers and colored pencils. then effects and texture in photoshop

Interesting topic. Finally I have time to participate! I don't know if I'll end up finishing but here's a WIP. Background to come.
Updated WIP. I went through about 50 different compositions, not sure if I should leave the little guy in the background...crits appreciated!
Ok here's my final, I think!

A dying sun slowly begins to wither after billions of years of ‘gestating’. With an epic explosion the sun bursts, releasing billions upon billions of tiny plasma based creatures known as sun-spores (interestingly enough, they are commonly mistaken as shooting stars). Once stabilized after being shot out into space they instinctively begin searching for sustenance, which is basically any known form of substance, anything from small meteorites to gases and plasmas. As the tiny balls of starlight begin to grow larger and larger (consuming larger and larger means of food, i.e. small planets, and eventually even entire solar systems) they will ultimately (3-8 billion years) enter a metamorphic stage, forming a ball of tightly sealed, super heated gases. It will remain in this adult/egg form for billions of years until it too is ready to burst, spreading fledgling sun-spores out into the galaxies to help continue bring life (and plenty of death) to the ancient beauty that is, our very own universe.
Some interesting takes on the challenge so far- i'm personaly mulling over a more 'vermin' (i.e. rats) oriented concept. Expect WIP's soon! Well done to everyone who's posted so far, kudo's towards Sovereign for his design especially (its shaping up as my favourite so far)...
Ok here is my entry
Ok sorry for not mentioning anything about the needle . The needle is attached to the general base of Birdibos brain and when Birdibos detect its victim, a signal goes to the general base and then the curve needle act as a paralization tool (inside the needle there are some organic mechanism that produces a paralizing liquid)
Sorry for my english, i hope you understand

If I can get past my 'over-thinking everything' phase, I'll be good.
I might pitch in, it's been ever so long since I did a COW.
DON'T CLICK THIS
gots an idea fer this one. could be funny, or stupid. has something to do with living off of ac units and pissing in your beer for fun (sickelsick, hopefully you won't think my concept is too similar to yours. ill vary mine but it will involve air conditioning as a source of food.). maybe ill get this one done before the poll starts. will post a wip and some comments soon.
Sovereign, kinkostas, peppi- diggn your designs!
