this is hard work! i always find it very very difficult to draw these complex stuff and to imagine how all these little gears and whatnot are linked to each other ! thats why i'm really enthusiastic about your last work and hope to see some more of these great executed tasks

    Industrial stuff looks sick, dude!
For what it's worth, I think you've got a real knack for this stuff.

What's the deal with all the robot dogs being walked? lol

a little more homework. still didn't meet my quota, but i'm trying. the turtle dog mech is supposed to pick up its "prey" and stuff them back in the shell for storage. the tall mech is supposed to have both legs attahced to the same side of the torso. the other one just has legs that "extend" far when "galloping"

Reika--Thanks! Both ways. This project already had a predetermined function of "bounty hunter" so i tried to use a bunch of non-lethal technologies to capture a victim. also, i wanted to concentrate on the search and track functionality--minesweepers, sniffers, actual dogs tethered by fiber-optics, etc. for me personally, i like to start with a problem like this and reverse-engineer the function and form, and then redesign the joints and mechanics. it all happens in the finished drawing, but that's the thought process i use. doing some of these joint/hinge exercises helps getting me to think like a designer.

cannibalcarnivale--kind of on the fly. i'm doing some pencil underneath the ink to start off with, but i'm not really basing these on silhouettes per se. i think better in 3d than in 2d silhouettes.

SnobbyOo--Thanks! I'll post what I can get done.

    ruuhkis--Thanks man, much appreciated!

    surus--haha. Thanks!

    riox--Thanks!

hunterkiller-- Thanks! yeah, i know... dogs on the brain. yo dawg, i heard you like to mech while you dawg, so we put a dawg in your mech so you can mech while you dawg your mech.

i just wanted to create something where it would be a suspenseful chase for the prisoner/bounty/escapee. unleashing a pack of dogs seemed cool. i also wanted to focus on a sniffing/tracking method. doing the multi-headed thing reminded me of a groping hand or a pack of dogs or the 4-headed dragon in the original legend of zelda. but that kind of weird sniffing, crawling motion seemed like it had some cool potential in a video game. i like the dog scenes in Cool Hand Luke too.

They look great. I would love to see some of those rendered and colorful. What I meant with my previous question was more related to the joints, which make my brain hurt when I try to do a mech.

awesome designs i love the dogs tethered to the mech. whats the main focus in the class. Is it more of a how to draw mechs that look functional or more of a exercise in pushing yourself to come up with creative designs that havent been done before?

reika--Thanks. I'll post a few notes about joint studies that i took in class soon. they're at home right now and i stayed late at work to do this. there are good ways of studying joints and inventing stuff.

velocity kendall--Thanks! we were doing unusual locomotion studies in class. i was just looking for new ways of doing things.

prsnsweeney--Thanks! i'm pushing myself pretty hard to come up with as much original stuff as i can. the class does focus on making plausibly realistic designs--as opposed to Gundam giant robot style stuff. a lot of the mechs i've seen are kinda chicken-walker-ish like Velocity Kendall said, or they seem super industrial like construction machines. i've got a couple of ideas up my sleeves that i want to play with. maybe my engineering degree will be useful after all.

Wow, great mechs Chris! I really like where you took the concept with the hydra-like turtle-dog mech.

Looking forward to seeing where this puppy goes!!

    so... quick update.

i was asked by LAAFA (Van Nuys, CA) to consider teaching an illustration-project-based class this fall. I'd probably need a minimum number of students to enroll from the sound of things. i'm still undecided. anybody local to Los Angeles interested in it?

NickyBeats--i think i won't be able to teach the class until next year. i've just got too much going on and they're asking me kinda at the last minute. sucks because i think it would be a lot of fun, but i gotta be selfish with my time right now. aaargh.

some rough cockpit designs. i wanted the 4 dogs to control the four mech heads. something about using a dog's instincts and scent-processing skills to drive the searching functions of the mech appealed to me.

i'm not a big fan of photobashing, but i'm trying to learn it for practical reasons...

battleships and cruisers for two of them, motorcycle stuff for the other one.

love the idea; its as morally dubious as using dolphins to seatch for mines but it looks pretty cool., although uploaded state vectors would take up less space than actual meat dog.
check out Accelerando by Charlie Stross and The Game of Rat and Dragon by Cordwainer Smith for more on that...

more rendering, etc. on the one mech. homework is to render it with four different backgrounds. this is the generic "studio" background.

Velocity Kendall--Thanks man. the concept is horrific but tempting. i've read some sci fi where they breed soldiers with wolf genes to develop a "pack mentality" etc. pretty crazy shit. thanks for the recommendations too. i used to read "the year's best sci fi" short story anthologies, and i recognize stross' name from somewhere. i'll have to check those out! thx again!
