so, first the good news, i guess... i've landed a full-time gig over at Gentle Giant Studios in Burbank. I just have to get my lawyer-friend to look over the contract to make sure I can still do my own intellectual property stuff in my free time without competing against them, etc. etc. and then it's all systems go. i'm pretty excited to be working with artists again and especially having a chance to learn from sculptors and zbrush artists.

so to celebrate, i bought myself a laptop i still can't afford so i can run cs5 and get started with zbrush 4. and to make myself portable, i'm trying out an intuos4 instead of the ol' cintiq.

that was all yesterday. here's my first attept ever at doing digital painting from life. and with a tablet instead of a cintiq. these are broken down every 25 minutes, step by step.

bhanu--thanks B, i hope this move alleviates some of that bullshit i was dealing with.

seage--thanks, but gawd no... i don't want to see my idiotic shit published. having it online is bad enough. especially with all my middle-age-crisis melodrama.

    yor--thanks!

my57--the oil painting was done by Mike's wife Davin, who is a really good oil painter. i think that they might work on another book thru walter foster, but don't quote me on that. Davin will probably be doing more oil paintings for that if it happens. i'm sure mike can paint in whatever medium he wants, but i think he mostly avoids full-on oil painting because it's not fast enough for the deadlines he deals with. i can't say what movie project he's working on, but i think he's busy with something like 20-30 full color paintings that will be "inserted" CG-like into some scenes of it. and he has to get that done in under a month! doing that in oils would be really, really rough. maybe if you gave frazetta some methamphetamine he could pull it off.

Sounds like it will. Having a full time gig at a good studio and doing your own shit in the freetime is the way to go. I hope that all the technicalities get taken care of and you get down to some serious business, its good to not think about the shit thats around you nd just concentrate on work.
I know it will go well brother.
    Much love

Nice painting and congrats on the job. If he's still there, say I to Dave Igo for me. I didn't know they were in Burbank. Now we're neighbors.

Cool man, congrats on the gig. I've been thinking of taking my laptop and tablet to life drawing as well but am not sure if that's gonna be confortable (we have pretty small tables to draw on and my intuos is pretty big ), plus i don't think it'll work for 15 min poses huh?

anyhooo stuff looking great as usual man

Wow you got a great sketchbook, ccsears. Your traditional work holds especialy high quality. You inspired me a lot when I browsed through here, I hope it was ok that I did a study after one of your drawings, the top left one here: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/att...3&d=1271577768 You really knows how to build a face so I tried to understand how you did.

it's my catwoman! they already had the batman designed, but i did the catwoman and 15 other alternate designs. there's one catwoman thing in particular i think might wind up someplace prominent, but i don't know. and a bunch of joker/harley quinn stuff too.

this was a good gig, hired a model, did a bunch of poses... it was pretty awesome.

    teun, bhanu, thanks guys!

just to clarify... i did a bunch of comp sketches for the front/back cover poses, concepts and compositions, not the actual character or costume designs.

they took the actual video game models and then worked some magic on them. i wasn't involved in any of that and it's beyond my currently nonexistent abilities in zbrush. i think the final covers were done with some photoshop additions and effects, but i'm not sure.

anyway, some of the alternate designs...i was told that one catwoman in particular could wind up somewhere else, maybe in a print ad or a billboard somewhere. but you never know how any of this will turn out. some of the joker/harleyquinn compositions could be really fun to see too.

anyway, maybe by the time the game has been in stores for about a month or so, i can post some of the sketches. technically, i can't because of the usual NDA stuff. Warner Bros is particularly strict about that.

    okay replies...

    FreddyScribbles--Thanks!

My57--Thanks, but it's not a game company. Gentle Giant makes collectibles, does huge one-off sculptures and installations for theme parks, etc. those kinds of things. I'm kind of working in their concept development dept but i can't say anything more than that.

    sin eater--Thanks! I'll try.

kingkostas--Thanks! I'm not out of trouble yet, but maybe there's light at the end of the tunnel.

    Teundeboer--Thanks T

    bhanu--Thanks as always B

Raffix--Thanks! someone asked me that a little while ago so there's a longer post about that. But mostly it's just because it feels like sculpting and lines up better with the way I think about rendering. It's also the same way that I paint most of the time. But I do a fair bit of linework on plain white paper too--all the pen and ink and ballpoint stuff.

LORD M--Thanks man! It's looking pretty good!

    Asatira--Thanks!

MetalMike--Yeah, 15's are a little short. 25 is doable, but quick sketch is kind of weird to do on the computer for me. but i am digging the iPad!

    LangOulk--Thanks!

    monsi--Thanks!

chromosome--Thanks! Igo works at Sideshow now, but my coworker who's friends with him will pass it on. lemme know if you're down to go sketch sometime.

    craigd--Thanks!

ipad stuff using Brushes app. study from an Adam Hughes cover (Rose and Thorn #4, if I remember right). and I hired M to model the other night and shot a bunch of photos. Painted this one today. there are videos on youtube too--they won't play on iphones because of the weird aspect ratio.

OH my gawd. I totally pitch that game informer magazine/edge card every day at my gamestop job, and EVERYONE chooses that cover with bloody batman in particular over the other one It's so cool to know you took part in that! your paintings and drawings are very inspirational, I LOVE how you break everything down into shapes, and don't get over fussy with stuff, it makes your work very clear and direct, but they are also loose and have lots of form. I really like your acrylic models paintings!
