5 minute heads, 25-minute head, 1.5-2 hour head. whatever. other stuff is going on but i can't post it.

NOTE: I'm going home to Chicago (well, the far western suburbs at least.) if you are local to Chicagoland and maybe want to get together and sketch or shoot the shit, lemme know via PM. I can't guarantee anything on short notice. I have sick parents and a wedding to participate in.

NOTE #2: Max Turner has a new book out "Faces 2." You can order it from him directly at:
    B-Y Publishing
    24355 Crestlawn Street
    Woodland Hills, CA 91367
    1-818-887-9873

I paid 20$ for mine at a local art store. If you do get in touch with him, mention that chris sears mentioned it to you (i'm getting y'all to do a shameless bit of ass-kissing for me). If you ask nice, maybe you can get an autographed one. also tell him you want him to do a book of his terracottas and sculptures. (he's an incredible sculptor).

Anyway, Max is probably in his mid 70's right now. He's more or less completely self-taught and a really, really cool guy. I've been over to his house once and he's sitting on a treasure trove of this stuff. It really deserves to be seen wide and far.

    hay guize,

sorry i haven't updated sooner, but there was stuff i had to attend to back home. i'm currently in the middle of 3 small to medium sized gigs and i haven't had much time to doodle stuff i'm allowed to post. right now i've got this on my plate:

--rough storyboards for a 90 second Chinese market video game cinematic

--3 character designs for a tv show pitch...something in the vein of Buffy but incorporating other mythologies.

--a ton of thumbs for vehicles for a possible movie property pitch.

sounds like a lot, and believe me it is. it doesn't pay as much as it sounds like it would though. rough designs for pitches like these are usually pretty low budget until they reach the next stage. but at least my rent can get paid this month. but i'm not going to dwell on that, the good news is that it gives me a chance to round out my portfolio with some concept design stuff.

5's, 25, 1.5hr. from a life drawing gig today. not the greatest, but i'm tired and pushing through. next weekend will be the last session of this particular kind for about 5-6 weeks so i'm trying to save up some energy to end on a good note.

Slechtvalk Thanks man, i'm using my parental stabilizers on them. it'll mellow out soon enough.

    ForScience Thanks!

Walid Thanks man, I'll try to keep it up, but the drawing sessions are going to take a vacation for about a month after next weekend. nothing i can do about it, but maybe i'll find another place to draw nearby.

MeTaL-MiKe You probably won't find Max's book in Europe. He more or less prints it out of his home or with local printers here in L.A. Best bet is to try to contact him, but i have no idea about customs, taxes, shipping or any of that. he makes kind of limited printing runs though and his other 2 books are out of print. try to get it soon if you're interested. up close in real life, his drawings are really, really Fechin-like but he also does a lot more stuff from imagination.

kingkostas thanks, wish i had time to do a tutorial or teach a class, but i'm busy trying to survive right now.

blexano thanks. it's colored pencil for both the blacks and the whites. i do use both prismacolor premier and prismacolor verithin--they are different hardnesses and catch on the grain of the paper slightly differently. verithins (the harder ones) are better for softening edges and filling in if the normal ones look to grainy. but, that said, i try to use the soft ones and get it right the first time as much as possible.

    frankgressie thanks frank, much appreciated.

my57 yeah, i'd love to do a tutorial but i've gotta clear my plate before i get any dessert. it's one of those things where i want to plan out what i say and how to say it carefully. i'll think of something though.

Slechtvalk THANK YOU part 2. some great paintings in there. really cool stuff!

Gorilla@attack Thanks man, not a master by any stretch of the imagination, but i'm working on it.

bigjoee5790 Thanks! these gray paper drawings are pretty linear and shape-oriented so far. the tone is almost an illusion most of the time. it's amazing how powerful core shadows and highlights and overlaps really are.

due to NDA worries, i won't post anything bigger than this for right now. from the set of storyboards i'm working on.

also got called today to do sketches for a romantic comedy. (gerard butler and jennifer anniston) i was away working so i told them i'd email samples in an hour. went home and mailed them samples and offered them a very, very cheap rate and they never called back. EDIT They actually did call back, but circumstances just aren't going to cooperate with what i've got on my plate right now. sucks to miss my first chance to do movie stuff instead of TV, but maybe some more good luck will come my way. At least the president of the agency said she liked my samples and portfolio.

victor 'ssup man. thanks. i was in IL a couple weeks ago. forgot where you're from. i'll probably go home again at least for x-mas. if you're in the chicago metro area and want to sketch sometime, gimme a PM.

kevinwueste hey man, i left a comment on your SB thread with the relevant info. i think his older books are probably outta print, but since you know Orbik and go to CAI, you should just try to contact Max directly. he may have an extra box of them stashed away somewhere.

Hey Chris! It's been a while. I've been pretty busy moving and job searching and what have you. It's nice to see you're working on a couple things, though. Bummer about the movie, but yeah, it's a good thing they liked your samples and portfolio. Speaking of that, do you offer that link publicly? I just made mine and I've been looking for the portfolios of other artists to get an idea of what it should have in it.
But yeah, great to see you working and putting up good panels.

    Later!

My57 I'll try to get around to it soon. The head drawing sessions will be taking a summer break for about a month after this Saturday so maybe i'll get around to it then.

Staticpen Thanks man, I forgot if I have your e-mail or not. PM me when you get a chance.

VictorB Sure man. Unless I get phenomenally lucky and score all kinds of money for hookers and blow, I'll probably be doing some drawing at the Palette and Chisel in Chicago over the x-mas holidays.

i bought halfway between the gutter and the stars while i lived in Japan. I used to listen to that album, Primal Scream's "XTRMNTR" and "Screamadelica", and Radiohead's "OK Computer" over and over again while walking around and commuting on the train. ...old school. on a discman player.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2tKu1pjfxvM

well... there would have been another head drawing session today, but the fucking electricity went out in the middle of the session and everyone had to go home. so i've been working on my next gig, trying to make up for lost time...

still waiting to hear if we got the chinese video game gig or not.

and here's a strange but true story... while finishing up those storyboards there was a bit of "crunch time" at the very end. in the midst of that, i received a phone call. it was another offer for a drawing gig.

    for fucking porno DVD boxes.

it was a fucked up phone call. they didn't have e-mail or a scanner to send me what the hell they were talking about. and it sounded either satanic or illegal or both. it would have involved drawing "goats with tits" and "pentagrams." i turned it down to make the storyboarding deadline, but it sounded fucking crazy.

VictorB hookers AND blow? haha thanks man. i'll drop you a line when i go back next time.

Some nice new pieces. Love the heads you posted earlier.

That would be some weird porn.
