I like you approach of drawing just 1 of each lizard - I recently did a study of crocodiles and just did multiple ones which were very similar :P
If you feel the need to go back and forth over your lines, you can do see while keeping understanding in mind, like so:

When you get better you may want to start learning the basic muscle groups to help you identify what you're drawing
I'm with you on your new goal, there's just something about draftsmanship and critical thinking that traditional teaches :D

Woo alex :D bringing in that line quality with those head studies. Some of the faces are distorted (esp the ones facing left) but this is a major improvement in facial proportions :00
