You should create your own characters to sell.
I've seen many people do that successfully.
More importantly in the long run they make a name for themselves.
I recommend Botany for the Artist as well. Here's a page example.
DK Books should have thick reference books on plants and forests.
I like most of his movies.
Most photography books teach the same thing. Just find one with good reviews and there shouldn't be an issue.
You mentioned taking photos of your art. Is that the purpose of your photography?
I recommend the book Framed Ink.
It covers character based composition in a variety of situations.
You guys might want to actually look inside the book before buying or pre-ordering.

If you're going to create an art social network, at least make it helpful to someone.
If you're just practising values with gray, I would recommend pencils or my favourite Graphitone ($2). Or if you're getting a watercolour set, also get a half pan/tube of Payne's gray for practicing....
