Yes these are nice for drawings on notebook paper, but you could improve alot faster if you did "plan to be a great artist." Get some good pencils, some decent paper, and get to it.
The large furry area of the creature on the first image is bothering me. Maybe you could break up that space with some sort of straps/harness, or other detail.

I'd say, go over the water with a hard-edged brush. Draw in some of the ocean spray and highlight some drops of water.
If your tablet does have pressure sensitivity, you can turn it on in the brush setting. Still if it is an older model, you should certainly upgrade.

I think I would have chosen a lighter background and sky color. You can still have the mood you are going for as long as the colors are not overly saturated.

Personally I think the skin tones are great, though as other's have mentioned the nose is too purple (by human standards at least). Try defining the plains of the face a bit more, specifically...
