If you're going to smudge, don't forget to add a few sharp edges here and there, things can get very soft very quickly (especially if you're going to use those alphacolours) :)
He uses a variety of stuff, but I know for sure that he uses these a lot. He also smudges with his hands, and uses the blade of his hand...
You just need to sharpen your pencil, press lighter (at first), and learn about edges

Do you have any examples of older portraits? I have a feeling you've just become better over time at seeing your mistakes, and drawings that you would have been proud of in the past don't cut it...
