Thanks Colorado Kid! I assume the scratch board tool is Painter? I use Photoshop 99% of the time. That effect is from a bristle brush clone tool on an overlay or multiply layer.

Ashess, I think you may benefit by augmenting those soft, fuzzy brushes with some hard edge brushes. You could even try utilizing selections and "named" paths. You could try soft edges, then hard...
