Thanks JR Mcgee! I really appreciate the feedback. My texture brushes are used both in an additive and subtractive way. I try to create interesting edge shapes (torn clothing, foliage, specular variation) by subtracting out of forms, as well as using it as an additive brush to apply distress and hue variation in my mid/shadow value ranges. Texture brushes can be a nice way of communicating ideas through complex shapes. Badasses like Mr. Mullins have really mastered and innovated the use of custom complex brushes. I have found it important to find one that suited my workflow and personal taste. As someone just starting out, it's important to keep doing this stuff a bunch. You will no doubt get better if you continue to learn from others, find your own voice in your work, and do this shit ALL THE TIME!

    Good luck JR!
