Im new here, but have been working on my photography for a little while now so here's the ones I'm most proud of up to date.
I will keep on posting new photos as well. Please feel free to make comments and critiques. I just started taking my photography seriously not long ago, a few weeks ago really, so any input would be greatly appreciated.

Hi and WELCOME to CA! :)
1: Yupp, that's one crazy cat alright. :) I simply love the personality in it. My crit for it is more on presentation and composition. You have it cropped tightly near the top, so try do the same crop on the bottom and then rotate it to portrait format and see how you like it. :)
6: Nice touch of minimalism here. I love the color as well.
7: I really love this one, the colors are so surreal. However, I do find the circular blurry object to the left a bit distracting.
8 & 9: These would be really lovely if the shrubs weren't blocking the car. If it's your car, I think you should try to do a reshoot. :)
10 & 11: Really nice colors in these. Watch out for tilted horizons though. :)
I really like 3-5.jpg in the second part of your update. :) I would probably crop out the green object to the left though.
Can't wait to see more! :)
P.S.: Don't forget to keep numbering your images.

I prefer the first coral image, the second one has too much dead space to the left of it and it detracts from the subject

Did a small quick photoshoot of my brother's (Hyundai Tiburon) and Dad's (Z06) cars before we lost all light. Someone left the IOS up at 800 and I didn't notice until after I had taken the pictures, but I think they are still pretty good. My next attempt will def be in a more thoroughly thought out setting....trash bags...

So the most recent band pics are no good? Could u give some suggestions? I am really interested in getting better at the gig pics. I have recently become the bands photographer and would like to continue improving at this sort of event.
I now also see that the fish tank pics are lacking. What do you think could help here? I am thinking that the addition of a nice macro lens could help quite a bit in this area.
How about the car pics? I realize that the bkgs are not the best, which will change for the next auto photoshoot, but could ne thing else be said about them? How's the composition and clarity? What could I do to make them more interesting? I was thinking a nice wide angle lens could help in getting closer details at the front of the car while still getting the whole subject in the shot.
As of now I am still shooting with the standard 18-55 lens. Any suggestions for that? Any suggestions on ne thing?

Maybe klips could pop in and help out with the band photos, I'm no good at helping when it comes to those. :( Your fish tank images are some of the best that I've seen. The only suggestion I have is that you should try some lighting experiments on them. Or maybe even B/W? :) For the cars, you should catch some nice images near sunrise or sunset in a nice level and clear environment. The composition and clarity are great on the ones here besides the trash bags, lol. :)
Don't worry, things will pickup. :) Activity here is slower than normal right now.

Good timing rose, I was just on my way in. I would have commented earlier, but I've been unable to do anything photography related except shoot recently, just been really stressed and unwilling to post/look/edit etc (my editing stack is about 350 deep after culling).
Cartoonbear: The big thing you need to focus on in a lot of your shots is the background. The lexus shot is beautiful and then is *totally* ruined by the packing boxes and other junk in the background. The newer car shots are a lot better, but still have that issue for the full body shots (although the part shots are freaking pro, excellent work on them!). The fish tank shots need more light, and more variety (they all look the same).
Band shots ahoy! Okay, I was talking to a musician last night is a radawesome punk/ska band, and he told me the three things that distinguish a freaking awesome standout band shot from a generic, boring, I was at a show shot (his terminology). They are:
1. They are screaming
2. They are jumping, or
3. They are doing something distinctive (e.g. guitar slung over the back, picking a fight with a crowd member [I was soooooo annoyed that shot was out of focus])
He then went on to say photos of 'people playing their instruments' are boring, especially if they're not really expressing anything. Unfortunately, most of your shots fall into this category at the moment, but that's what we're here for!
24, 27 and 34 come the closest to what you want. Tips from me include get in closer (you lens is almost touching their face? That's about close enough ;D) work with different angles (like with 29, but eyes open) try indoor gigs (get the 50mm f/1.8, it's around US$120 I think and makes shooting indoors ridiculously easy) and MOST IMPORTANTLY shoot as much as you can, because you never know when you're going to get 'the shot'. My favourite shot I've ever got was taken at a gig long after I thought I had got my best shot already bagged for the night.
So, go out and shoot more. You won't get better if you don't shoot heaps and heaps, and we will always be here (in varying degrees) to comment on your progress.
Cheers,
Klips

AWESOME! thanks!
Now you named the 50 f/1.8 as a nice inside lens, but what would u suggest for an outside one? Most of these guys' gigs are outside...and for the different angels I am thinking I should try a lens with a nice zoom perhaps....what do you think?
I do agree that I have problems with backgrounds, so I will start trying to plan shots a little better......What could I use as decent detailess backdrop? Perhaps a big white sheet.....

That one has a really nice mood. Although the edge of the window is distracting.
I think using a plain white sheet for a background on the car would be a bit boring. Like I suggested earlier, you could do well in finding an open landscape; kinda like that in 8 & 9, but without the shrubs in the way.

Out of all the photos, i like 26 more. it's got feeling into it. the rest are kinda cold imo, you're basing yourself on composition alone and missing the real art through the feelings you manage to give your viewers.
you should try to find more interesting subjects imo. sure, cars are nice and i myself like'em, only they go more into the novice-commercial-photography section rather than art. try to use your strong compositional intuition basing yourself more on feelings and not necessarily on how the compositions work.
find people with interesting expressions, weird houses, objects, anything out of the ordinary. because right now all you have are ordinary objects/people/places shot in a highly technical manner.
no hard feelings :)
Cartoonbear
July 1st, 2007, 04:38 PM
zero hard feeling taken :)
I guess a lot of them were taken just for that, for that sort of feel. To be a pretty picture, but I am looking to create more feeling and will hold onto these ideas.
edit: after going back and looking, I receive certain feeling from some of the pictures.
54- shows devotion
35- joy
34- excitement, I can just about hear the music
29- his expression explains a deep feeling many may not understand unless having felt it (so this one has a smaller audience)
I do see that many lack a much feeling if they have any, but I do feel that I am beginning to bring these feelings into the pictures.
Is it perhaps the way you perceive the pictures? Is it the way I do? Does ne one else read these feelings?
I would love to add more feeling into the band pics, but what could be done? Perhaps close ups on expressions? Pic of the guitar as blurred hands move among it?
Cigaro
July 1st, 2007, 06:40 PM
that's just the thing...you need to make others perceive feelings. i for one have no way of knowing what's in your head, therefore you need to explicitly convey these feelings you have :)
as for the band pics, those are always hard to manage. yours are kinda static. i get the idea that these guys are playing soft, mellow rock for example. it's not your fault that they lack utterly powerful expressions ;) these guys should imagine themselves playing in front of about 50.000 people. :D . but of course, given the circumstances, that was probably the last thing on their minds :)

I have mentioned #54 a few times now. Here, in another thread, and in another forum. At this forum it was said to be a good composition and such, even a hit of mood (thx rose). In another forum it is being bashed, being called a complete loss because of the horrible composition the burnt hand and forhead and the positioning of the guitar. I do not feel that this is my best work, but far from agree with these claims, but I am biased.
What do you see?

#74 could use a little bit of brightening
# 75 & 77 are a bit too high on contrast, IMO. They lose the detail on dark surfaces, ie. the nice texture of wood.
#76... the composition doesn't fully work. More of a close up angle would have given the old dusty objects more interest.
The cars are very nice. Do you have one showing the car(s) as a whole?
Keep it up!

98 and 100 are really nice.
98- nice composition and tones
100- nice colors.
They could use some play on cropping though.
98- top right corner is a bit distracting
100- a little trim on the bottom and a cut off the right.
101-could use some more space at the top, but could definitely benefit from a trim off the bottom.

106, 111 are very nice. The light looks amazing. 112, too, I suppose in the lighting department, although it almost looks like the sky was pasted on from another pic. But with shots like 111 I think you have to be careful before the colors start to look gaudy, and again, some things look pasted in. Pay a little more attention to the details like that, this is going to become even more important if as you say you want to pursue the commercial end of photography.
Cheers,
