Ey man,
I think youve already got the control, but you need to learn the basic stuff like perspectives and anatomy(bone and muscle). Your shading is already pretty tight. Keep drawing good luck!

that's a good start but you should also shade it a little and make a constant line, try to leave the pencil on the paper for a longer time because the many short lines (especially in the area around the arms) aren't necessary
hope i could help ;)

not too bad of a start, though its obvious you are new to this.
the anatomy needs some work, and everything needs practice. do some warm ups of loops, lines, and stuff. do some gestures too.
focus on some lower body anatomy a little more. you do detailed upper body, and skip out on the legs. the last anatomy study you did, you outlined the body and filled in the detail. don't. the body doesn't have an outline like that. the skin forms around the muscles, not the other way around.
don't ask people to do faces/hands for you. asking for help on fixing them is another thing. do some skull studies, and draw your own hands.

its a great start dude. Try taking a sketchbook out with you when you go on the bus or into a public place and do 2 minute sketches of the people around you. Helps you're anatomy loads ^^
Also you might want to check out Seedling's concept art 101. Has several exercises that will help you out :)

Thanks for the comment on my sketchbook, and to return the act, its clear that you have the passion and creativity to pursue art. If I have any advice for you it would be to check out "Dynamic Anatomy" by Burnes Hogarth. This book will help you tremendously, it did for me!8)

But anyways, Just stick with it, determination, and inspiration are your biggest allies, seriously with those on your side you will succeed. Just keep at it and dont be afraid to be bold. There is already improvement in your shading!
Keep it up!
It would be cool for you to comment on my sketch book(theres a link in my sig) I wuld greatly appreciate it!

Hey Throtailer :)
Like you say, there's more to learn, and you can only achieve that by practising...wish it was easier, but it's not:) If you don't attend any life drawing classes, then take a magazine and just try sketching what (or who) you see-people sitting, standing, facial expressions...not a day without a drawing!;) I have to say, I really like the spider drawing at the top of the page...it's definitely got character and personal touch, if I may say :) It reminded me of a scene from "The Hobbit" , if you read it, when spiders kidnap the dwarves in Mirkwood... :) Very gloomy...
Keep posting, it's great start!

Hey, thanks for stopping by my sketchbook! ;D
Everybody so far's giving you lots of great suggestions, it's hard to think of something else to mention! I think the most important for you at this point is just to keep drawing. Whenever you're bored, just draw whatever's in front of you - it doesn't have to be perfect, just keep at it. If you do a drawing and feel that it didn't come out as well as you'd hoped, get a new page and do it again. And just relax and enjoy yourself! Don't pressure yourself and feel like you have to become a master in a matter of days.
Keep it up! ;D

Just keep up with the studies. I suggest not trying to much anatomy yet, learn proportions etc. and it will be easier to place them muscles later on!

ya definatly keep up the studies, those will surely improve your shading, there is some really nice contrast on the one on the second page, and your lines are getting neater, nice job
also when you update, I recommend to use photobucket so that you can use an IMG address, rather than just putting in a link./...

July 29th, 2007, 07:15 AM
Hmmm. I'm not particularly thrilled with the carbon style that you seem to use a lot. I suggest trying a different medium for a while and see how that goes. Also, you may want to invest in a scanner to help improve the quality of the pictures you show. A bend in a page can throw off proportions and makes it hard to comment. Your still life is improving but the handles on your pot look a little dainty and flimsy.
jedininjaman
July 29th, 2007, 04:39 PM
Hey cool pitcher it looks good, but it also looks a little rushed spend time on each individual stroke to get a nice even blend of tone, but it looks very nice!

Hey Thro' thanks for the comments on my sketchbook! Looking at your stuff I have to say it's a good start man! Your proportions look good which is half the battle. The only tip I can give that you haven't already been given is to remember that the muscles attach to the skeleton and intertwine each other making the shape of a person, they don't just fill the space of a person. So they will create bulges and rolls etc. I hope thats clear, Loomis would be a real good person to study from helped me lots! Keep it up man!

Thanks for posting on my sketchbook; You were asking about Old Master Drawings. Pretty much you search for some of the old great one's works like Leonardo, Michaelangelo, Durer, and try to examine them and reproduce it, The main thing is to examine and learn from them. I would like to recommend that you check out the Web Gallery of Art (www.wga.hu)
You also asked how I learned my anatomy and how long it took... Well I've mostly been using old master studies and a combination of examining Michael Mentler's Anatomical sketches [Look for his Book of Bones], Burne Hogarth's 'Dynamic Anatomy', and Louise Gordon's 'How to Draw the Human Figure; An Anatomical Aproach' so far I've been mostly doing hard core studying for about a year... I still haven't been working on the legs... yet.
Niva.
August 1st, 2007, 01:32 AM
Well, that last pot you drew looks good, now make it cast a shadow on the ground to really make it stand out. It looks metallic to me btw.
Master studies aside try to sign up for some figure drawing life classes in your area, I only did my first class earlier this year and they make you do exercises (if you have a good teacher) which really help you improve your speed and approach to how you draw a figure. We almost always start out with ten 1 minute sketches - basically you have 1 minute to get the pose of the model down on paper - then flip the page and do another! At the end of the 10 poses you feel tired but it really helps.
Take care and good luck!

throtailer, hey cool work dude, listen you asked me how i learnt about the human anatomy, and i would suggest you observe other artists work in which the human figure is prominant, i have been buying comic books for a 7 years now and they help particularly well as comic book artists tend to emphasize certain aspects of anatomy, and provide avery stylised look to the human body.
I dont own any human anatomy books, so comic books, mirrors, and pictures and movements of the human body tend to build up as some weird collective amalgamation
i am by no means whatsoever an expert, but i do hope that i have helped in some way shape or form.
hate to be reduced to a cliche but all you can do is practice practice practice!

August 1st, 2007, 08:14 PM
hey throtailer thanks for the comments on my sketchbook. Nice stuff here you're doing pretty well so far. As far as anatomy goes just do like everyone else says, take classes, look through books and comics, heck look at parts of your own body as a refrence. Also something I picked up in practice (I don't know if you do this or not) but try drawing in pieces rather than the entire thing. Other than that your shading is really good.

Good work in here so far. You've shown a lot of improvement already from your first post.
Keep working on still-life drawings, especially at blocking in shapes and rendering. The human figure is one of the hardest things to draw, but it's best to just continue doing studies and just be drawing as much as possible. As has been mentioned before, try studying the figure from books by Loomis or Bridgman. They break down the structure and forms very well.
Aside from that, try to focus on lighting as well, and look at rendering in terms of light and shadow, and how it reacts with objects. If you keep drawing every day, you will improve tremendously in a short time so just keep at it!

Throtailer,
Thanks for the notes in my sketchbook!
I had a look through here up to this point. I am glad to see you tackle human form once again. Your shading and sense of light is good, and it seems you are fairly comfortable with inorganics (non-living things), but your people are weak. The only way to get better is to charge ahead and face the problem head on. I'm proud of you for doing this. Others on here have suggested studies and life drawings. That's all good and well if you have the resources. If you do not, there is nothing wrong with just going somewhere public and watching people, then doing super fast sketches (10-30 seconds each) to try to capture the posture and movement of the human form.
I especially like the muscle study you did. Do more things like this. It doesn't have to be perfect right now, but the more you understand where bones, muscles, and organs are in the body, the better you will understand how it moves and all fits together. (I take this advice as my own medicine at the moment!)
Hope that helps, and I'll check in from time to time. :)

Wow I absolutely love the rendering on the candlestick, the one from life
Again it seems rushed, but you get the shape and tones, even the high lights
off extremely well
It is in my opinion your best work yet hands down
You should change tour SB thumbnail to this one, because it shows alot of improvement, So ya nice smoother strokes and more time spent on a drawing will help you succeed, but really nice work man:)

Hi throtailer thank you for stopping by at my thread hope you'll visit my works too, about your work i notice your pretty good at shading and tones.

Nice sketchbook! I really like the energetic shading style you have. The figure was very good for your first referenced body drawing. Hi Throtailer,
Thanks for the comment on my sketchbook. I think you have a good grasp on how light effects different surfaces, as evidenced by your sketches and your 3D pieces. However, I believe you still need to work on form. When it comes to that, there's probably no other way to learn form other than to memorize it. Books - I've read one of Loomis' Figure Drawing Books - can help you more easily grasp it, but ultimately you have to go through your own painstaking experience/hard work to understand it.
I keep a humongous folder of artwork I admire from artists I admire. They are people that I want to be like. I know how I need and want to get there; now it's the actual frustrating journey to get there.
Keep up the good work!

Hey throtailer. It depends on how you want it to turn out, but if you're going for a smoother finish for your digital pieces it might help to use bigger brushes to get in the basic shadows/forms before using the smaller brushes for detail work.

your 3d work is really strong but to be honest forget about that and stick to drawing until you fully grasp composition, proportion, colour theory, prespective and anatomy.
do alot of life drawings(i need to that myself)do alot of master copies and do a lot of studies and you will definetly be on your way.
good luck

See both his forearms, once bigger then the other and there other little mistakes in there too, so I think it best to get out an anatomy book and really sit down and learn, draw and take it all in..try and think as much as possible and not just copy for the sake of it. :) keep it up bud!

I think it's pretty good for being from memory. :D When you do a picture like this you should really think about how the muscles interlock and attach to the bones. Like the other poster said, an anatomy book will help you out. Keep up the good work!

Its a good start, but you need to not draw the eyes as just floating pupils, but actual spheres, this will make you pictures more convincing and add personality
Also watch the basic proportions of the face

Hey there throtailer, thanks for commenting in my sketchbook. I see that you're working hard to improve and that's really good. I really love your picture of the castle! I think its very nicely done indeed.
As for drawing anatomy and face, you could try using guidelines, to help with keeping your proportions right :)

I know, it's hard to vie for comments with so many members....
But I'll oblige as well...
Your 3D work is beyond impressive, especially for even three years ago.
For your sketches?
I'd suggest adding some darker tones for depth, to make your sketches pop and leave a bigger impression in your mind as you improve in anatomy.
I'd also opt for a mechanical pencil with a good hardness to improve the form, but keep whatever you're using for shading.
Most of all, keep on drawing them. Monotonous sketches can can boring after a while, so find ways to make it fun (for example, you could doodle something around the skull, interacting with it maybe, to build up a silly series of doodles. I do this constantly. XD )

hey man great work here your diligence is admirable keep it up
some things to keep on eye on,
-line quality, make sure that your lines are solid and less sketchy, it is ok to have sketchy lines at the beginning but just make sure you clean it up a bit by the time you are done
-shading, make sure when you shade that you arent just shading to shade make sure that your shading adds to the form and shape of the object dont just shade to shade, and also dont just scratch in the darks with lines , rather block in the form with a thick part of the lead so that it is all unified, also so the texture isnt wack
but ya nice work keep it up and ill see you around

You are getting along pretty nicely, there's some improvement between the drawings on the first page and these latest ones. Keep at it! When you draw, note each individual contour and try and get it down the way you see it. Get some information on measuring techniques in drawing (checkpoints, negative space, plumblines, construction lines etc) and practice those on still-life. Still-life is boring but will help your drawing greatly, in addition to continuing with anatomy studies. Good luck and keep it up!

Hey,
youve improved quite a bit since i last looked. Keep up with the figure studies.
Pencil Xena has uneven arms and the one leaning on the pencil looks a little dislocated.
The 3D model is looking good but everything is sill looking rather plastic and badly artifical and dont take this the wrong way but a little boring. It is very dark and you are loosing a lot of detail and interest in that, perhaps if you made a broken but still lit lamp on the floor to light up those dark areas it would serve a dual purpose of giving the image a bit of story.

You got the right idea here with some of your latest posts. Focus on shapes and shading to define dimension. Once you have the basic shapes, you can focus on details. I suggest working on your anatomy a bit as well. There are a lot of great sources out for this. You got skill, it just needs some focused nourishment. You might try out some tutorials. They are fun and really help understand art from expert perspectives.
That is my two cents for what they are worth, which isn't much these days.
Cheers.

I like what I see, but I can see that hands are still not a strong area for you. That is an easy area to fix though, because you probably have an extra hand that you do not use while drawing. Hold up your extra hand in a pose and draw it with your tablet for us. You do not charge yourself a modeling fee so you can practice on hands for free by drawing your own.

hey there throtailer; nice going; but you need to work on your underlying structure. try putting in the basic 'cube' shapes clearly before jumping ahead and making a figure.

http://img523.imageshack.us/img523/4487/karysse9.jpgClarifying the ground plane will help your drawings. This guy looses volume, and gesture, and character because the ground plane has no depth at his feet. Without depth the viewer can't estimate thickness, the character loses mass and solidity. Without depth there's no action/gesture in and out of the picture, like how in real life the legs and arms are always moving this way and that in relation to the body, not just side to side.
This has better picture depth, since the ground plane's clearly shown, the distorted rectangular plane of the building is related to the horizon. http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/3073/namsacw7.jpg
Good exercise is to draw the sihloettes of various objects resting on a table, the ground etc, pens, cups, books and whatnot.
Also clarify the shapes you're using, on that one head page the dark shapes are just scribble, character is specific, scribble is not specific.
Here I clarified the the shapes by cleaning up their contours, where white meets black. Then I experimented to see what it would look like if I made the corners of the black shapes pointyer. It's possible to try other shape experiments.
Do some copies of artists you like. I've been looking at John Buscema lately, I've got "Essential Wolverine vol. 1" that's got some cool stuff, been copying through that, so thats one suggestion.

you can see improvement in your works, but i think you should do some bridgeman and loomis studies, along with RL studies (like the soldier thing) to get a better hang of anatomy and perspective in the human body.
keep it up man.

'bout time you posted some work. I can give you a real crit.
You really need to do a lot more life drawings, or at least find photo ref. Maybe everything will eventually look like the study. Of course, your Jesus still needs some work. You made him a little chubbier, with a shorter face and rounded features. Don't be afraid to change things radically, especially since it's digital.
I like aspects of the floating light house, too. The color palette, and the rendering of the rock. Not the most original concept.
