I'm sure 20 billion thread have been started like this before but after some initial searching I haven't found anything that really guides me well...

Basically my situation is this. I have just finished two years at George Washington University as a Fine ARts major. For those of you that don't know the program there is pretty sucky and I've always regretted not going to art school or at least a legit program. I initially was an economics major but found art late freshman year and have loved it ever since. I've been taking some classes at the Pennsylvannia Academy of Art over the summer, my first experience with real art facilities, and its created in my a strong urge to go to a place where I'll get better instruction an foster creativity.

I told my parents about it and surprisingly they told me that I should go for it even if that means starting over. So I guess, being summer and all, what are my options. In terms of a portfolio I don't know how great I'm going to do. I have the number but I'm not so sure about the quality and they are almost all drawings in either graphite, charcoal, or conte. I have some stuff which I've been told is decent but I'm not so sure.

I really want to become a concept artist, or at least train to be one. If I decide late its not for me I'll still have that core atelier type of classical background which can serve me other ways. Any Ideas? I think I might have to wait a semester if I'm going to go for my BFA starting almost all over, although I think some of my credits will transfer.

Help? Does anyone else do this type of thing. I have a complex about my ability already since I just started doing art regularly about a year ago and now I might put myself back another two years or more. I've had people say I have talent, (artists..not just people that want to tell me what I want to hear), but I'm still a tad scared.

If anyone has any ideas I'd be much obliged because I'm kinda lost right now :(

I'll make this short: I'm glad you have your parents support. Keep up the drawing. I would say every artist has a complex going on...in fact most people do. It's ok to be a little scared and lost, and it's perfectly fine to listen to others positive opinions. You are the one who will know wether or not they are being legit. Have faith and confidence in your abilities and keep improving.
In refrence to your portfolio, remeber quality not quanity. Check out other people's work and examine.

Best of luck to you, live the dream and God Bless. :)

Thanks much for the kind words. It is truely in God's hands and I just hope I'll do it His way and not mine.

After talking it over more with my parents I don't exactly have a clean start...they kinda want to make sure that some of my previous credits will transfer.

I've been looking into PAFA. I've done some research here and I've heard only good things about them. Is this true? I want to be well rounded and have classical atelier tools under my belt...Thoughts?

Max the Mutt Animation School in Toronto is offering a 4 year diploma in Concept Art. It offers a combination of traditional fine art training in painting and drawing, plus specific drawing courses related to concept art, and relevant computer applications. We are waiting for government approval. however, the first year curriculum is the same for all diplomas, so students starting in Sept. can switch to Concept Art easily.I'm not sure if we still have seats for September but suggest that you look into it. You might also check out our thread whiich will give you more info about us, and our website, www.maxthemutt,com.Let me know if you need info from me!

Thank you Maxine for posting the link to your school. I had been scanning other topics before and had visited. It will definitely be kept on my radar screen.

I think due to finances and parental input PAFA is turning out to sticks its head above the rest. I've heard really good things the only downside being that they are so technical that conceptually artist struggler there sometimes. Would I be well served on attaining my goals of becoming a concept artist if I went undergrad at PAFA or hindered?
