This is supposed to be sort of a zombie-esque creature, because on sundays I draw zombies sometimes. Practicing with painter.

This is a portrait of a guy around the evergreen campus. I'm happy with the overall thing, but I feel like I didn't quite resolve the eyes. Eyebrows give me grief. Also I'm just noting to myself I had some trouble with the beard, like how to make the value dark enough and still suggest the form of the hairs.

This is a copy after a Rembrandt etching. And the other is envisioning a dragon. My concept of what their wings would look like is pretty hazy. Studies forthcoming?

ive been outside doing oil sketches every day. they are around two hours each. the picture quality is so crappy on some of them, im not exactly sure how to get the lighting right. ive read a few guides on it, but they still always either have all this reflected light if i have the flash on, or with the flash off the picture is all blurry. nn?

The bearded guy is nice. I think the rough edges on the beard alone suggests hairs very well, you don't particularly have to draw them per se. You're right about the eyes, however.

Good start!

i felt like i was floundering with oils, frustrated in general, so i did some reading. i decided to limit my palette after reading k4pka's painting blog. i had 12 colors on there including black and white, that was probably screwing me up big time.

i also watched some bob ross paintings, which i had never done, and a few other videos on youtube. that was kind of helpful.

anyway then i painted this. about an hour probably.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d180/dhaydu/june3007.jpg

ahhh! been battling oils some more.

this is a sargent study in progress. all flat. yes its pissing me off. haha.
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d180/dhaydu/sargentstudy1.jpg

an unsatisfying picture of my stove. i still want to have these studies be around 2 hours.
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d180/dhaydu/july207.jpg

then i thought to myself i would work on a portrait in monotone, and see if i could figure that out some.
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d180/dhaydu/will1.jpg

that didnt really work, so i retired in disgrace for the day.

Hey there, sease. It's funny, I found this page by chance my first day on CA, and I'm in Olympia too. I fact, I think I recognize some of the people you've drawn.

You're good, and getting better. I'm not sure I can offer much constructive criticism, but I can give you some impressions and comments. I have to say it's cool to see places I know well drawn and painted.

Post #2 That's a good portrait. Is that from life? The eyes look OK to me but I suppose they could have more life. The linework on this is really pleasant.
Post #5 Café Vita! Perspective is off but the values are good- I can tell light is flowing in through the windows.
Post #9 Well done portrait, especially the loose lines of his shirt. I like your hatching style.
Post #16 The 4th Ave. Bridge! What didn't you like about that sketch? It's immediately recognizable, the design is good, the picture has depth...
Post #17 Interesting tones. What are the lights at the top of the dome's reflection? Just curious.
Post #19 First portrait here is good, engaging expression. Is that a bow on top of his head?
Post #21 That portrait creeps me out, but it's a cool style. Good likeness?
Post #25 & 27 Is that portrait done yet? Looking good.
Post #34 Is that second picture a self-portrait? I like the fourth one, but what's up with his mouth? That's the 4th or 5th mouth you've shown like that.
Post #44 Those pen sketches look Rembrandt-ish.

Your latest picture is good too, but where are the eyes? It seems like the whites should be visible somehow.

Take care, and keep posting!

hey smws. do you go to evergreen too, or do you just live here? we should be art friends. haha.

-post number 2- from a photograph.
-the bridge picture i dont particularly like because it... doesnt jump out at me the way i want it too. i can see what is wrong with it, but i dont exactly know how to fix it. the shading on the underside of the bridge is what bugs me.
-the lights on the dome are little uh... i dont know. there were lights! i assume they were houses. possibly will-o-wisps?
-yes. that is a bow on his head.... but why? i don't remember.
-post 21, yeah, thats a decent likeness. thanks!
-the portrait in 25 and 27 will never be finished in that form. i painted over it with something else. there was a monumental fuck up and i lost patience. bad!
-maybe the whites should be showing in that last thing? i dont know. i played around with it, i kind of liked having just dark pits.

anyway thanks for a substantive response! feels good.

Ah! That last one is awful! Also it's well done, but, damn... it reminds me of the Michael Whelan painting "something in my eye".

No, I've taken classes at Evergreen but I'm not right now. I do try to attend the figure drawing sessions in downtown Oly, but I haven't been able to recently.

Were those ape studies from a zoo, or reference? Either way, well done.

I really admire the way you handle you pen, especially in the latest image. Mine always come out so cluttered! You have a good distillation of essential lines on some of your sketches.

Latest portrait is good but maybe a little long in the bottom of the face? Dunno.

these are a couple of paintings i was working on when i inadvertently deleted their reference photos forever. so i guess that means they are done!

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d180/dhaydu/Picture001.jpg

so i like the stance in this one, its a tiny departure from my usual full on portrait view. my main problem at this point was going to be layering the colors on the torso and somehow making the face work.

i found this book in barnes and noble called 'classical painting atelier', and i really liked the sound (look, rather) of the program it described, and decided i wanted to take it slowly by limiting my palette to 2 colors for awhile. anyway i didn't really finish this, i just got bored and decided to do more instead of working on this one.

it's painted on frosted mylar, which i gessoed to see what it would be like..

getting more consistent with that pencil!

this is painting im working on, based on one of the pictures i took of hussar's model at the workshop. i'm not really making much of an effort to make any features exact.

so here's a digital sketch. i'm not going to really go in this exact direction, just exploring some ideas..

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d180/dhaydu/Picture008.gif

and here are some different stages of the painting. i started in acrylics but moved to oils after i did some base color plans. these are awful pictures but i'll do a better one of the finished piece.

Hey, sease. Seems like that baby could maybe use a bit more contrast? I can't tell if that picture is done, but the face seems a little flat. I really like the 3/4 portrait, though. I just started playing with some paint, so your work will hopefully inspire me.

Kind of a shame that we never met up when I was still in Oly... but, I'm a horrible introvert so it's not really surprising.

The second portraits in posts #96 and #102 are especially nice, to me. Keep it up! What sort of angle are you working on to make this your living, anyway? That sound tough but worth it, good luck. Certainly you have skill.

i got a couple commissions and it's pretty cool! this is the first one, the first stage of a birthday present for the couple being married in the photo. i am unsure on pricing so we agreed on 200 bucks. this is all acrylic, today im going to make the first pass in oils... in retrospect i deeply regret not starting more paintings this way, building up all the drawing, value and colors in acrylic and then finishing it off in oils, its much faster.

I like how you are exploring different mediums, techniques, styles, and subjects here. I love your inked sketches of backgrounds, landscapes, and the ducks the best. The line work is beautiful and can be a signature style of yours.

The painting of your baby cousin looks better before you finished it, in my opinion. It's nice finished too but I somehow like the unfinished version.

It seems like you've done a lot of studies. There are still some inconsistencies (sometimes your subject looks stiff, sometimes they look so expressive) which will probably get worked out as you paint and draw more.

I enjoyed looking at your work. Keep it up!
