I haven't been in school since 2004. As much as I want to be in college, I'm not to sure of myself. I don't believe my art is good enough to submit a portfolio. I recently joined an art class and the instructor tells me I have enough drawing under my belt. Am I a victim of fear or just not capable? But as far as grades, artistic ability, and the fact that I haven't been in classroom for so long. Can I just apply to school be accepted and start? Or should I study certain subjects pertaining to art before I apply? Any help will be extremely appreciated
Thank You

Hey friend It's never too late for college or to learn anything new for that matter. Post your work here or make a sketchbook and post that. Helpful critiques by fellow artist can help you out trememdously.
BTW if this is something you believe you're destined to do good grades will come easy - a little faith in yourself goes a long way. Take care :)

Hi Ink. There is a post in my Concept Art 101 thread about college application portfolios that might be helpful to you. The link is in my sig.
And don't fail to apply out of fear, because you certainly won't be accepted if you don't apply! At least with a rejection letter, you'll know where you stand.
Good luck!

What are your goals? Do you want to be a concept artist? What schools do you plan to apply to ? What kind of drawing are you doing now in your class? Figurative?
What are the expectations of the school you want to attend? Some schools expect to teach fundamentals. Some expect you to be beyond fundamentals. The best approach is to contact the school and ask!
Art Messiah is right- if you have the passion, drive and character to deal with hard work and frustration, it's never too late.

Thanks for your collective encouragement. I want to be the type of artist that is well rounded. My ultimate goal is become an animator. In my art class I draw geometric shapes with a light source. And I was able for the very first time to draw from a live nude model. I want to apply to SVA and the Art Institute of Philadelphia. I don't know much about other schools. But I need instruction and to be in an artistic environment.

There are plenty school threads around here so I'm sure you'll find a school you'll like. If your interested in animation try Ringling ;) or you can try this link

Someone posted that link in a thread I was responding to and it was very informative.

I'm 25 years old and I haven't been in school since 2002 and I just applied to SVA for this fall. So I say go for it! :) I got in to the Fine Arts program and I start in September.
Here's my application portfolio if you want to see what other people are applying and getting accepted with at SVA: http://www.freewebs.com/myorangehat/svaaplicationportfolio.htm

Ink...just so you know most schools give you specific directions on what drawings they want to see in port's. Like 10 figure drawings/2 still lifes/some paintings/whatev. Anyway I read in a business/college book that RSAD (a wellknown school) has a 70% acceptance rate. So I think you should be ok. I didn't have any art classes before I got accepted 3 years ago, the only thing I had was 10 life drawings and some other stuff. I think you're probably better off than you think LOL.

Orange hat.....I may be transferring to SVA also in the fall but for Illustration. I'm not sure yet of what I'm going to do I didn't receive any scholarships my GPA is a 2.7. =( I looked at your stuff I liked it.
