Hello.. I live in iceland and here there are a lot of tattoos going on at the moment.. And out of curiosity.. I just wanted a view on this tattoo a girl here is getting... I dont know her personally (although I´ve argued with her on the internet) What do you think of it? Erm.. cool or not?

If you were getting a tattoo.. what would you get?

Why did someone get a Mark Ryden tattoo?? Unless that *is* Mark Ryden, why would anyone get a tattoo that isn't of their own design with personal meaning?

Happens every day. Not everyone is an artist. I was amazed when I was told by a tattooist friend how many people go into a shop and just pick something off of the wall. Impulse tattoos, man. Crazy. Though I guess that's how the sailors did it back in the days before tattoos were a socially acceptable body decoration.

its pretty cool, but i think there should've been more graphic elements like at the bottom, reminds me of murals. looks nice down there, the top is a bit weird though ;)

i think what your getting is just as important as who your getting it done by. im in the process of looking for a tattoo artist and the 1st shop i went too (though hyped up by friends who know them) was not where i expected them to be. im still gonna talk with the owner and the guy who im told is the go to guy for what i want done, but the porfoilios of the other artist there weren't all that great.
people are going to get what they want, and tho you or me or many other may think its stupid, its still their body and they might have some meaning behind it.
though i will admit is is rather annoying when you see someone getting a tat of a painting when you know they didnt get permission to do so.

Guilty as charged :nohope: But hey, I was 18 and a little too into anime... could have been worse though, I think of it as a birthmark now if anything. I don't have the guts or the "right" design of my own in mind to get a second tattoo. If I got my own work tattooed on my body I know I'd look back on it in a year and think "Ah crap, that arm is off and the pose is off-balance and I shouldn't have picked red for that bit there and..."
Talmir: I dunno, it looks like such an original sleeve, I would hate to see her just copy this design. Just not feelin' it.

while we're talking about tattoos, here's mine!
In my freetime I enjoy performing magic (ie. David Blaine), card magic in particular.
I tell people this is a magical tattoo, and then I "pull" an ace out of there instantly. hehehe, get's em' everytime. Plus, it's kinda like I always have "an ace up my sleeve.' when I wear a long sleeve shirt, I normally roll the sleeves up to a bit, it makes the bottom corner of the tattoo peak out a bit.
sometimes I finish a card trick with it. "Is that your card? No, not that one. Look, here! It's on my arm!"

I have 3 - and I'll admit my first one was impulse, gotten as soon as I turned 18 and could get one. It's so boring.. rosebud on my shoulder blade, all I did 'creatively' was have him add a thorn with a drop of blood. Meh.
Then, I got JRR Tolkien's trademark on my left arm. It shows with short sleeves. I LOVE IT. I don't care that I didn't design it - hell, 5 people /ever/ have known even wtf it is. I wanna give those people a cookie.
The last one I got I designed myself, of a sort. It's my husband's name, in Sindarin (Elvish) with an infinity symbol wrapped around and between the letters, on my lower back.
As far as full on art goes - that goes in my bin with piercings... no thanks. ;)

this also puzzles me. Why should a person get permission to have a tattoo made from a painting? It's one thing if the shop is hanging art as flash and not compensating the artist, but if a customer comes to them with a specific thing in mind, what's the big deal? I just see it as flattery and a life-long conversation piece that may even hip some people to your work.

personally i would never a get a tattoo with colours on them I don't know may be its a personal thing I did not design either of the two I found them on the net yeah lazy me,
my theory is never get a tattoo that you may regret, that may go out of style ie. I know someone with a tattoo of marilyn manson cira antichrist superstar but when ypu are 50 how will look? maybe my thing is go for obscure go for graphic.
here are some bad photos of my two I took them with a camera myself hence not great shots.
thinking about a 3rd, but they are pricey, here at least one cost €140 and I have van to fule and insure now so it is low on my list of priorities.

contron you are entitled to your opinion... but why in your opinion do you think Tattoos are dumb?
Angry Scientist, yes I am even had the pleasure of seeing them live on the tour of their last album. Good wikipedia article strange that there was no mention of the infamous ICA gig where they drilled through the stage with a pneumatic drill

I understand how some people can not agree with tattoos - it's the same way I feel about piercings in anyplace but ears. Just something personally I wouldn't do and in general it kinda skeeves me out to look at on other people. It's the very same notion, I just don't dig 'holes' as opposed to artwork. It's a fine line, but I'll draw it anyway.
I just know that when I got my tattoos I never felt more like I was making a statement about who I was... and I felt much more like myself after they were done. I'll be proud of them when I'm 50, 60, 80 years old. :)
And I had dejavu while writing this post - I think there was a convo about this already here sometime back. :P

If I were to get a tattoo, it would be something small and out of the way, but not so out of the way that I couldn't adjust my shirt and say "Hey, check this out!".
I wanna get one, just don't know what of or where. Other than that, I've completely made up my mind. (:
And some food for thought:

Choco lol cool pic, I don't mind discret tattoos but some tattoos like shaving your head and getting one on the back... it just seems a bit overboard to me,
Zord, it is that whole sarcastic tone it gets lost when you type it down
see I am being sarcastic here but who would have guessed :P

If I was getting a tattoo it would be purely graphic design. I would never get a name or a face on a tattoo, just seems like a horrible idea in both respects.

The tattoo honestly looks like it was slapped together with no flow at all and hey that blue is fucking ugly.
Also really take the time to pick out an artist or else:

Oh man that portrait of that dudes wife is outta control. ZOMBIEWIFE!! But yeah Neondevil is 100% on about taking the time to pick an artist that is 1.)good and 2.) excited about doing the piece. My finacee just got a Mucha piece (The Moon) done on the inside of her right forearm and it came out reeeeally nice. I was totally blown away by Annie's (the tattoo artist) ability to just nail the "mucha-esque" line quality and expression of the girl....I'll post some picks when it heals up. It was actually the first tattoo I've ever seen done in person. I've been a big fan of them for some time now and have lots of friends with them, but so far have none of my own... However I think thats going to change in the near future.

I tattoo for a living. and i don't think there's anything wrong with getting a Mark Ryden piece on your arm. I also see little problem with doing someone else's art on someone even without permission. I wouldn't be upset if i saw one of my works put on someone. I would be upset if i saw an actual tattoo that i did that someone was saying was his work.
I'm flattered when customers come in for my work to be put on them permanently. And when you replicate someone else's artwork on a client's skin, you are actually working on it, doing your best to do the original justice. You're never trying to pass it off as your original art. It is a demonstration of your technical abilities. The original artist is still given full credit for the design. The collector also is basically paying to advertise for the original artists for the remainder of their lives.
It's a tough call, and i definately see your point Intern. Would you have a problem with someone on CA getting a tattoo of one of your works on his body if he thought it looked really fresh? 'Cuz i already have... (just kidding.) But really, in all your experience with people, do you think if someone called you up asking for permission to get something tattooed and you declined they would decide not to? This is someone who was set on marking themselve with this for life...
I would say custom designs are best, but some people don't have the creativity or imagination to work with their artist to really develope really solid ideas. It's probably the most frustrating thing about the profession. I won't have anyone's work on me that i don't have primary input on, but some people don't want a new design because they've already fallen in love with someone else's art.
These are some pics of my tats. The arms i'm still having worked on (miles and miles to go) and the leg i'm doing on myself when i have free time.http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w168/nadelmacher/Photo185.jpg

oh yeah, those two portraits are atrocious. I'ts like the guy doing it didn't even look at the pictures, and did it without any real guidlines. Just makin it up as he went along. Inconsistent line weight all over those letters, i would say at least there's no blown lines, but i really don't know if it would look any worse if there were. yeah everyone should demand examples of an artist's work before committing to something like that.

Enough said.
My tattoo wasn't impulse, it was largely premeditated, because I would probably scratch my arm out if it was something that could fade fast in terms of preference.
