You all know the drill here, give some C&C, and I'll give some back.
Im starting this SB for the celebration of being accepted to CCAD and getting my loan through to actually attend. This will be the sketchbook I'll stick with from now on, promise.

Just fixing my initial post, so sorry for no new stuff yet. Also just got a moleskin, so expect some of those soon.

Ok, here goes...
1) A John Wayne commission piece I did for a friend. Its much larger in life.
2) A page from the sketchbook.

The John Wayne piece is pretty rad. His hat is sitting a little high though. The face looks really good. Legolas is looking good as well.

congratulations on getting into CCAD man.

the John Wayne piece has a lot of contrast in it, so even as small as it is it reads better than the page from your sketch book. I'd say the sketch book page could benefit from a fuller range of values/more contrast.

lookin good man :yayca:

Yacob- Thx
Master 25 Days- Thx, yeah the hat is a little high, and his left eye is off as well.
Johny 5- Actually the John Wayne piece is about 6 times bigger than that, I spent about 5 hrs on it. But the page from my sketchbook looks that way due to the pencil that I use, I cant get any good values to come out, Ill buy a new one and see what happens.

hey nice to see you back, and congratulations.
i see you made some more stylish figures, the last post is nice the only problem i see is the bodies don't go with the head and the long neck principaly in the woman, also the man of the left has a too real body for the stylish head. i hope these result useful, and i expect to see more works coming.
nice work in the john wayne portrait.

DIMAGYAN- Thx, the head is a little off compared to the body, Ill make sure to take note of that when Im sketching.

Heres the actual size of the John Wayne piece. Its on an 11" by 14" sketchpad. About 5 hrs work.

I agree with dimagyan with his comments on your figures.
woo! I'm definately able to recognize John Wayne, nice (although again, there's maybe a need for more values, like darker darks, some midtones, etc)

Hi, there-

Nice start to a sketchbook (actually, you're farther than me because I haven't really posted any real "sketches", just old completed stuff).

I like your style-- you have graceful yet firm lines. As for the heads being more stylized, I don't know about that... I think the heads work Ok with the bodies, even in the girl with the neck rings. After all, the rest of her anatomy is a little "alien" so it works all right in my opinion.

John Wayne's face is very interesting up close- when it was small, it looked like kind of a conventional shading style (perhaps just a little dull). But up close, it's neat-looking; more stylized. If I were to continue working on the portrait, though, I'd clean up the shirt a little so it's harder to see the direction and overlapping of the shading.

I'd say you should post more sketches, but I'd be a hypocrite for now...

megadubitably- Thx, yeah, values are a must have.
Jester retseJ- Thx, be checking yours as well.
Data Strings- Thx. Ive got a lot of work left to do on the John Wayne piece. Not sure if Ill be able to finish tho, Im supposed to give it to my friend soon. I tried to have a different approach to rendering the protrait. And it turned out quite nicely.

Hey eric.
great start goin.
I dont know if its your scans or your pencils but it looks like the john wayne

lacks some real deep blacks. Push that pencil into the paper! and try to remember to keep it consistent. I can tell where your pencil line starts and stops each time in his shirt and in the shadows. That's where it takes real patience.

it looks like in your earlier sketchbooks you made the necks too long on figures, but in your most recent entry that isn't there. so keep that one up!

I like your firm sharp lines. they draw me in and really define your sketches. my tend to be very scribbly and im tryin' to fix haha

Master 25 Days
June 18th, 2007, 12:46 AM
I agree with Mega about the John Wayne piece needing more values. If you were to work on it some more, you should put an even shade down for his skin and erase where the highlights are. Push for darker darks like Sean said. Add in some backlightings, and hints of his anatomy under the shirt and you should have an excellent, solid portrait.

I like the guy in the argyle vest. Looks kinda like Steve Buscemi and the long neck isn't apparent to me immediately. I think it works well toward his gesture.

I like the hatching lines. Very controlled.

Very nice work here indeed! Its a clean and intresting style. However, I would advice you to study some anatomy (especially of the woman).
And maybe try to experiment with lightning and shading.

Keep drawing and experimenting

Nice latest page!

You have very beautiful lines, especially in the female figures I've seen so far-- they are consistent but vary just a tiny bit, making them hold weight, strength and elegance. I'm interested in seeing you fully shade the figures in your latest post. Also, your female concepts especially are unique in not necessarily being geared towards combat. I think it's more original that way (as well as realistic).

I will agree with Meg about the female's hands.

Master 25 Days- Thx. That was a fun sketch.

Data Strings- That was a nice comment, never had anyone put it that way before. Thx.
armetage- Yes, Evil Lynn is awesome. I miss He-Man.

1) An unfinished sketch of my puppy. Just got him a week ago. He's half Chiwawa, half Pomeranian. Looks just like a red fox.
2) Snake Charmer. Alright, I know this is totally unrealistic, but it looks cool. About 4 hrs so far, unfinished.
3) An update on the John Wayne piece. About 6 hrs work.

Ooo, I see more!

1.) Very fine- great delicate touch. Perhaps, if you keep that same value going, you should fade out as you shade down the body-- I dunno, see how it goes.

2.) Never seen anything like this. For some reason I like the legs, even though they're a little odd (and of course incomplete). Perhaps it's the heavy-to-thin line you have going there. My crit for it is a little unfounded because you aren't finished- I was going to say that having some of the patches on the snake much darker than others is a little confusing. What would unify it would be if you are to shade the snake with a uniform shadow. But I'll bet you were planning to do it anyway.

3.) 2 words: much better! Is this getting framed? I ask because perhaps you should make the torso (that seems to end a little abruptly) fade into the background.

Your work reminds me that I have to stop oogoling over the "It's finally finished!!" and do some work myself :^^;:

Master 25 Days
June 20th, 2007, 01:41 AM
THe JW piece looks much better now. Just a couple of darker lines missing for the corner of his eyes and upper eyelashes.

Snake guy caught my attention immediately. Even though you're probably going to finish the rest, I think it will be interesting to only continue a bit lower from where you left off and erase the rest of the legs to give the appearance that he's standing in a cloud of mist.

hey the female in post 17 looks very good, the other characters may need some work, the one jumping has a nice movement but his head have something off(i think the chin) but maybe is just me.the lastest post is very good i like the puppys head and expression, and the snake guy has a good pose it looks balanced with the snake head.the wayne portrait is turning more contrasted wich is good.

Data Strings- The snake guy is a work in progress, not sure if Ill finish it, but I was going to do a uniform shadow just as you stated. I dont look at the finally finished section that often, but when I do, its instant inspiration. Hehe. I wouldnt worry about it tho, just as long as your doing something productive towards your art, ( be it sketching, painting, or looking through others work). Thx for the reply.
Master 25 Days- Thx, that would be a cool idea, didnt think of it. Ill try that when I get photoshop. Im sure that piece will look cool digitized.

Hey I see some improvement since I last looked at your stuff. Lines are getting better, and there is a lot more solidity in a lot of these. Maybe try and loosen up a little more, and "scribble" around before settling on a line, to help find the best shapes/proportions and the most natural poses. Also you can push your values more, get some really dark spots in there to really give things more punch. Hope your mom is well.

Glad your mom is doing better, mate.

Pretty scary creatures there. I like the proportion on the guy in the middle. The rotting flesh on the top left guy is done nicely as well. I think more seperations between lights and darks would give them more dimension. Right now you have a lot of mids and the only distinguishable darks are the lines and the cast shadows. Throw in some darks for the form shadows as well and keep them seperated from the mids enough so that when you squint you can still see them.

Nice updates (wow, I actually got your page to load)!

Your sketches are always so neat and clean.

The ones on the first one look like they're related somehow, not just in style, but like... like they'd be in the same movie or something.

My teeny tiny crits would be that the ankles look a little small in the "witch" (nice foreshortening though), and that the rips in the skin of the "zombie" guy in the left seem like they stick out more than they probably would in existence. Perhaps try to add some more values. :left: (I feel like such a hypocrite saying that).

For some reason, the "teddy" one confuses me. When I first saw it I didn't know what the "man" was exactly doing to the bear, whether he had any affection or was trying to suffocate it. I dunno, maybe it's supposed to be that way.

Nice hand exercises- clean.

Neat sketches (both literally and figuratively)! You have some intriguing character designs, I particularly like the guy with the checkered shirt and the lady with the long neck - is it inspired by African tribal culture? The perspective drawing of the man looking down maliciously is very well-done, and so are the John Wayne and the dog. The hands are also coming along wonderfully too.

I also suggest adding more values, as your current shading makes your subjects appear somewhat flat. Anyway, keep up the good work!

I like the foreshortening on the girl on the left. Only thing I would do is place her head higher or bend her torso more. Guy on the right looks killer. Left hand is a little unnatural, you should see more of the top side (opposite of the palm) and the knuckles should slope more with the middle one being the highest.

Page 1:

The last three images look really good there. You've cleaned up the John Wayne one very nicely, which would have been my critique on it. The shading kind of looks like it's not in the right places but if you have a reference I would want to see it. If you don't, I'd just comment that there's something strange about that mass of black on his face that looks like a rectangle. The wolf-ish dog is a very good start and my only problem with the snake picture is the man's head because looks like he's missing an ear and it looks as though his hair doesn't continue down the back of his head.

Page 2:

You have a serious talent for and knowledge of drawing hands. It's really nice. Good job on those.

You've added a lot since I last commented, kudos. Your sketches are very creative, and your hands are looking superb. Maybe you could do a few leg studies and find out how big legs are in relation to the rest of the body (proportions). Remember that when a person is standing up and has their arms straight down, the fingertips should reach midthigh (is this right? I think so).

I've realized through your drawings that you have a thing with clothing- you're great at conceiving creative garnments that flow (not exactly literally though). They seem to work well, and have sort of a "foreign fantasy" flair.

Perhaps you should take some kind of fashion design as an elective (and no, I'm implying you're gay :tihi:). But I'm curious to see what you'd come up with.

Love the way you varied the line width in that last one. Really gives the man substance. It would be interesting if you extended the dashboard and somehow combined the clock with the part on the other page to unify it into come crazy scenario. I dunno...

And above that- Dr. Zoidberg meets... Davy Jones!

The 2nd pic= Racing Against the Clock? That was my first reaction until I realized he's actually driving toward a clock.
My mistake about the hands. I just assumed the drawings of hands by themselves were done from life since they look like the same hand and they're all left hands.

Meg is right about the fingertips reaching mid-thigh. Also the legs should have a slight S-curve to them when viewed in front and from the side. The curve is more severe in females but it still there in male. The main thing, I think, is to not let the thigh and the shin have the same curve.

yeah, if you haven't checked out gimp, you should. Yay for free stuff. However, I've had some trouble making it work with my tablet, but that might just be my tablet's fault (because it's a stupid aiptek and it kinda sucks).
Are all the sketch poses from your head?

Oh, by the way, the same thing is happening with your link as mine. I believe when we got these links up, we had taken it from the "last page", except we had thought it was the first because we had more posts to a page. So when the link url is the same, it makes people click automatically revert to the last page. At least that's how it is on my sig. Go to the first page and recopy the URL (if you want people to see your 1st page). Mmm... I probably could've said that in less words >_>.

Hey Envisor, your stuff looks pretty good but there seems to be a certain akwardness in some of your sketches. Almost like they are to blurry, not enough contrast/defined edges, or the characters lack substance. err, rather I mean they seem to be floating in space or the porportions are off or something.

Perhaps try working on unique attributes in your characters that would set them apart from mundane people. Think in terms of a movie. There are the main characters that stand out and then there are fill ins that are practically the same...Main = Black & white contrast, Fillers = Grey...blend in/ non-important...That comes through in your work some, but if you were to add more contrast in terms of the silhouet and in terms of the value (black & white --- Try adding more blacks to ur drawings they seem very grey) then I think your work would really come to life. Look foreward to seeing more of your work as you progress. Hope I don't come across as an ass :( I'm just trying to offer some constructive critcism; the same criticism I would expect somone to give me on my work.

Nice sketch mate! Try to experiment some pencil texturization on the monster skin, in this manner I think it become really cool!
Cheers :)

Hey it's been a long time! Sorry for my lack of visits. Great work with #84. I like the concept. Maybe you should expand a bit and see what other concepts come up. I really hope you're still drawing. I would hate to see you stop!

Ooo, I really like your last sketch! Keep working on it-- extend the water out so silly people like me don't think of him coming out of a tornado, hehe.

Your line quality is getting better from what I've seen.
