View Full Version : THUNDERDOME CHALLENGE "CURSE"- Everyone is Invited

Medium = any colored (no b&w)

Deadline = 4th of July

Topic= Curse(s). Since a curse is a nonphysical thing, I want to see how you will express it. This can be modern or archaic and there really are no rules except adding the complexity of color.

I will be competing as well, and I will start finding judges. If you are interested in being a judge, send me a message. I will be offering a small congratulatory plaque or paperweight to the winner. Lets see what you can do.

Update:
Judges will be (so far): Seedling, DavePalumbo, DSIllustration

OK guys, I know the deadline is quite a bit away, but since Im going to be on vacation..I started early- heres my first try at the "curse". I dont like this version, it turned out too flat, so I will get started on my second soon.(if and when I got time)

The Curse- draft 1
Everywhere she goes, everything she comes close to- dies
She herself is immortal, taking the life of that which she kills as her own.

Not quite as flushed out, but I ran out of time.
---
Guess being cursed can meen multiple things. From the guy whos luck run out, to the solider haunted by dreams of passed events.

Nice pic JLAlfaro.

:edit - Might be a lil hard to see, but hes bed is located in a swamp/lake. White cubes are cards ^^

Hell this sounds so good.. ! I should put this topic on my notice board in my room so I won't forget.. I feel like doing something creepy, like curses from the ancient Egypt, that people who go into a tomb grow three heads and a hump or something :P
(now don't steal my idea huh :P nah I'm pretty sure everyone has great ideas for him/ herself.. now let me think of more)

hmm well, that's it.. gonna write this on my hand so I won't forget ^^

Why is a curse a non-physical thing? I guess I should ask, must it be non-physical?

brianhamner
June 17th, 2007, 08:15 PM
ok maybe its a metaphysical thing to be exact. I dont know I'm not that smart, but to answer your question, no it doesnt have to be non-physical.
Any way you want to represent it is fine, but keep in mind that one of the points you will be judged on is how well and creatively you communicate that there is a curse represented in your artwork.

Hi everyone!!
It is my first post! I'm new here and I would like to try something. I'm doing now a master degree in Human Engineer (I know, theres nothing to do), but I can't quit from drawing... So, I'll see if I can do something about this topic.

I would like to say that it is a honor to be on this website full of "Da Vincis" and "Michelangelos" from my century.

Seedling

Hi guys! Here’s my feedback. If I said anything stoopid, it’s because I’ve been typing quickly over lunch. (Sorry ‘bout that)

My picks for winners:
First: JLAlfaro
Second: Wandering Monk
Third: WhiteGuardian

Technical Execution 1 – 10 Includes degree of finish, and technical stuffs like use of color, line, composition, anatomy, perspective, bla.
Successfully Illustrated a “Curse” 1-10 Does the image tell a convincing story about a curse? More points for images that communicate their story without the need for accompanying text. Successful story-telling is gated to some degree by technical execution; i.e. it takes some technical proficiency with perspective to successfully illustrate a dilapidated mansion.

The results:

JLAlfaro – bunny killer
Technical Execution 7
Successfully Illustrated a “Curse” 9
Total: 16
This is a curse personified – I didn’t need any text to understand that. I like the idea, but it reads as unfinished. The bottom-left bunny sets a standard that the rest of the image doesn’t live up to. Watch those edges – they are much too hard in many places, such as the near trees, and on the woman’s dress. The trees in the background need more development, even though they are strictly playing second fiddle. Compositionally, I like that the bunnies are way down tiny at the bottom; it’s fun to stumble across them.

scumworks – soldier with nightmares
Technical Execution 3
Successfully Illustrated a “Curse” 4
Total: 7
Before I read the text, I thought this fellow was standing in a doorway. Overall the idea is great – a former soldier dreaming of the past, right? The execution is very much still in the sketch state.

Wandering Monk – child being grabbed by monsters
Technical Execution 8
Successfully Illustrated a “Curse” 7
Total: 15
What is going on here – is he being cursed by these awful things, or are the monsters a part of a curse (i.e. “I curse you to be fondled by creepy monsters!) The text clarifies that. Technically, I can’t tell whether the big head is giant, or whether it is much closer to the camera. The anatomy of the hand and arm on top of the boy’s head is great, but the other bits of anatomy don’t live up to the standard set by that. The monochromatic color-scheme is effective. Compositionally the image works well, except for the dark eye socket of the big head, which is stealing the show from the poor kid.

WhiteGuardian – dragon lady
Technical Execution 7
Successfully Illustrated a “Curse” 7
Total: 14
I like the story! Even without the text, the viewer can potentially connect the dots between the word “curse” and the image and conclude that this woman is suffering from a curse that has transformed her. The bit about her face sounds like you’re covering up for having technical difficulties. Anatomically, those wings need elbows, and the feet are a bit club-like, but overall the improvised anatomy is convincing enough to communicate what is going on. There are technical problems with the perspective of the floor. The simple color and lighting scheme was a good idea.

Naloda – laundry lady
Technical Execution 2
Successfully Illustrated a “Curse” 2
Total: 4
What is happening to this poor lady? She seems to be a somewhat Indian woman, doing laundry, and suffering from multiple heads or multiple personalities. With more technical skill and the addition of text explaining what is going on, this could be a solid illustration. Technical issues (primarily issues with the medium, and drawing issues – for instances what is the blue object?) are currently holding it back. The color scheme and composition are pretty good, and it is obvious that the woman is unhappy.

brianhammer – flaming wolves
Technical Execution 5
Successfully Illustrated a “Curse” 6
Total: 11
It’s a couple of novel-cover adventurers having a discussion about how to smite a trio of flaming wolves with their pointy objects. I’m not sure how this is a curse, but the story that is being told is clear. This is done in acrylics? On the technical front, drawing issues (anatomy and perspective primarily) are holding this image back. Compositionally there is some funny stuff going on, such as the head of the left-hand hero getting lost in the flames. Color wise, pick your dominant colors and stick with ‘em. Right now the blue sky is fighting the pink sky is fighting the yellow flames, and the heroes are losing out to all of the above.

HFix – butterflies and stone curse
Technical Execution 1
Successfully Illustrated a “Curse” 1
Total: 2
The idea of butterflies turning people to stone is nifty, but without the text, I wouldn’t have known what was going on here. With the exception of the vaguely humanoid form, nothing is recognizable. It looks like either this was left unfinished, or technical shortcomings are getting in the way of story-telling. Kudos for giving the assignment a shot! Don’t let the low score stop you from trying again.

Well, to keep it simple I will stick with Seedlings grading method:

1-10 for technical proficiency.
1-10 for clarity and originality of concept.

(I will also be grading on a curve, so that 10 means the best in this thread, as opposed the best you could achieve... we can all achieve better)
