Doudou: Thank you very much, I think I will!

Wookiedabo: Wow, never thought I'd get such a wonderful compliment, thank you!

DARAF: Will do!

28chelseaslater: And I thank you for your comments.

BohemianChaos: I'll try to keep it up! :P

Hai!^^: Hehe, I dunno if you can tell but, I love em too!

armetage: Thank you! Sry dude your first link doesn't work for me, and I don't think I'm at all able to critique your second link piece. It's like way beyond my skill's from what I've seen.

Camara: Haha, I didn't think everyone would like him so much. Thank you!

Wow, Thanks guys, it means alot. Here's some more penguins, and the hero guy is an older one that never got finished.
Btw, the "dark knight"(I don't have a name for him) isn't finished either, so any critiques on him or the hero would be very welcome.

Really great start and continuation...some of the digi knights or beings (not sure what to call them yet) can be tightened up more, but they look good as is really. The Hero piece could use some kind of light coming from the eyes to give him more personality/expression. Not a blinding light, but something soft. The last penguin baby, the one with the eyes....GREAT!

Keep at it and I'll lurk

Stark, ah man you read my mind, I already tried the blinding light and failed. So here's the updated version, and I will continue to work on this.:)

Penguins - KUite!!!!!!!

dmitri
June 9th, 2007, 03:01 PM
I don't know how human the hero is supposed to be, but the middle torso feels a bit odd to me. It's asymmetrical and kind of tube-y (looks like he needs a waist?). It seems a little flat too.

The penguins are total killers. :D

FlyingPenguin
June 11th, 2007, 12:11 AM
ped454: Thanks man, and I have to agree with the dark knight comment, I just wanted someone else's opinion so thank you!

AztcFireFlower: So KUite!! Thank you.

dmitri: Ah, I see what you mean, I thought it looked off too, but couldn't put my finger on it, hopefully this update is better.;)

Penguins with afros- YES!

I like the very 1st winged knight best...the red on the breastplate in versions 2 and 3 is distracting and leading my eye away from the knight's wicked flaming head, which was the focus for me in the 1st version. Plus I liked the darker aura.

The hero is good too. I liked version 2 of that one best. Version 3's overhead light is too bright and takes away from the original, down-on-his-luck moodiness. Also, I think it was better without the eyes. I don't want to see his face...it leaves something to the imagination. What's he thinking? The body language was enough for me to see that he's having a rough go. At least, that's how I read it. I say go back to version 2 and erase the eyes.

That's my 2 cents. Good stuff, keep it up.

Please visit my SB sometime.

Piranha Clan: Couldn't agree with you more on the red lights out the stomach, I uh, kinda forgot to take em off before I posted. :dur: I also returned it to it's darker state.
About the hero, I think I'm gonna leave it alone for awhile, maybe come back to it later. Thank you very much!

Chermilla: Thanks, and I've still got more penguins coming.

Here is the final version (maybe)

Aw! That baby penguin is so cute! I really love the penguin with the glasses reading the book, he's cool, Lol. Do more penguins, there really good!

That one picture with the guy with the feather hat and the light shining down still seems a little too dark, hope you'll keep sort of playing with it.

The last one is indecipherable. Are those poles or beams of light? What is the figure the light is shinnig? Is the floor water? What's that pile of scribbles next to the figure? It doesn't look finished so I guess your going to change some of those already, though I just wanted to say...

And, yes, I like the winged thing without the red lights on it. It came out great.

FlyingPenguin
June 14th, 2007, 01:53 PM
Yay, I'm back.

KtCruit 57: :teeth: Thanks Kt. I changed the last picture around, so hopefully it reads better now, thanks for clarifying that it was a bunch of scribbly-junk. I went overboard with the texture and not enough painting skillz. Thanks again, and for your troubles, a penguin!

153389
Here's another knight picture. Rip it to pieces with crits plz :teeth:
153390

And here's the fixed statue thing, any crits are welcome on this

damn dude I love all the guys in armor you've been drawing. I like em even more considering you do these cute penguins too - its such a stark contrast in styles and content. It's pretty inspiring to see just how much you can spread content and style in art :] Keep it up

KtCruit 57
June 14th, 2007, 08:00 PM
Hm... great! You fixed up the statue painting really nice. I hope you'll kind of smooth out the scratchy ceiling with your photoshop magic. I'm wondering what the light source is behind the figure? An end of a cave? In the first picture, I figured it was in a swampy woodsy place.

And now I shall rip your picture to peices with crits.

I wonder what the foggy stuff behind the soldier with the red feather is? The grass has scribbles going sideways... um... doesn't grass grow up? Lol. Though I did see you used one of the brushes for some of the grass, yes. Those other blobs of fog look like... bushes? And the swords look black. Aren't they usually silver? I guess you could say it's shadow, but because of the reflected light on the front of him, it suggests theres some (not a lot of) light in front of him. Hm.. I hope you'll sharpen some things. Because it doesn't look finished, all these crits are probably for not becuase I'm not trying too! :bashful:

You do lots of great stuff, hope you post some more! (more penguins Plz!!! :bashful: )

I'm trying to give crits, but not sound snotty like some people do-- there trying to help, but it sounds snobby, so I hope I'm not! :bashful: Just wanting to give some help and advice.

FlyingPenguin
June 15th, 2007, 06:33 AM
Zarquino: Thank you, very much.

Razorb: Thanks, it means alot.

Soul Karl: Thanks man, the different styles keep me on my toes, so I hopefully don't get too boring.:xpld:

KtCruit 57: Ah, thanks for coming back, and yeah, in the first statue picture it was kinda in the jungle/swamp area. Now it's in a cave, and light behind the statue is the opening of the cave. Maybe this update will solve some of that stuff. About the knight picture, it wasn't finished much. I was hoping you guys could help before I continued, so thanks. :rendered: (I don't think your post was snobby at all, I'm hoping for more of these kinda crits.)

If theres anything else that you guys think is wrong with this stuff, feel free to say so. It wont hurt my feelings.
Now, on with the pictures!

I don't use this word a lot, but those penguins are adorable, highly stylized, and I love that about your work, it doesn't get boring as long as you continue to improve.

I think you could benefit by working on cleaner lines, and doing some anatomy studies, maybe with some value studies tossed in there.

The enviros are looking great, you're showing clear progress, those are just a few thoughts

cheers

Great improvement, you've got a great eye for colour and structure, one thing for critique you should add some more things to your sketchbook that you don't like drawing, don't let them slip through while your other skills become amazing.

As for the sunny happy piece, maybe to make it more happy you could make a few of the rabbit in dynamic jumpy cute poses, also maybe the girl needs to be a bit more exciting too, she's happy adventuring got friends lets see a big smile and an adventurous disposition.

FlyingPenguin
January 23rd, 2011, 01:29 AM
Thanks, Jaunay I never expected to be complimented on my coloring, I've always thought of that as my weakest point.

Flowers... I don't like to draw flowers. That's the only thing I can think of. I'm just kidding, I don't like drawing tech stuff much, I'll have to get into that.

I'll definitely take all of what you said about the bunny painting into consideration. Again, thank you.

This is really great stuff! I like the cartoony AND the realistic work. I can see that the cartoon work helps keep your realistic work feeling more alive/energetic. There tends to be a tendency to draw exactly from reference in a lot of life drawing that ends up being either:

A) really stiff (this is because the person was holding the pose for HOURS)

or

B) Really relaxed/bored (because the model has just gotten comfortable and is holding a LONG pose).

I think people down play the importance of Cartooning in helping re-enforce a energetic pose. Frazetta was a cartoonist/pulp comic guy before he became the Fantasy Master, and all of that time cartooning made it so it was actually easy for Frazetta to create energetic/dynamic art.

Enough ranting, just keep doing what you're doing cause its awesome. *thumbs up*

Hmm, I can never seem to get a grasp on painting color and value at the same time. It's always one or the other. Like when I tried to color the picture below, it just looks like a b&w image colored in. :\ But when I start with color, the atmosphere and hues are much better but the values are... off.

I know a lot of people work in b&w and then add color with great success, but it seems like I'm just missing something.

Maybe if I add the color sooner, right after I get the general values in?

Amazing, you control a good variety of styles. I don´t see any problem with your textures man... imo its better to achieve a good rendering and then apply a very subtle texture. and I see you already have this:)

FlyingPenguin
February 16th, 2011, 11:14 PM
Zeitwolf: Yeah, I wanted to push his appearance towards being gangly and skinny kind've like a emo kid would be, but I think I went a little too far. It was easy to notice after I fixed it. Thanks!

Ricardo Robles: Heh, I wouldn't say I'm in control of the style right now, but I'll get there eventually.
About the textures, I have struggled a lot with them. I still don't really feel comfortable with painting texture.
Say, I'm painting a rock. I can get the values right, the shape right, the color right, but the texture always looks haphazard, and I never get the right "kind" of rock I'm trying create. So, maybe I'm just not getting the correct shape or color etc, because if those are correct it should read as a rock without texture right? Meh, I dunno what I'm talking about.

The last four are nice. The faces in the first are expressive with their texture. Maybe as an issue I can point out that the line between sky and mountains is way too contrasting and takes away from the faces - maybe you should smoothen it a bit. The two environments are very clean and crisp - I like that the have composition working for them. I really like the one from the oriental - these females on the foreground have a very strong pulls because of their clothing color, yet they fit well in the piece.
On the portrait - try to clarify your lines - it is not obligatory to have smooth transitions in all time, but when trying to convey femininity, you should look for smoothness. So work on your lines and strokes there. I like the nuances and color of your works.

Ricardo Robles

well you are creating a painting texture since you start painting something, and it involves shape, values etc.. there´s difference between painting a rock and painting a tree obviously. If we are talking about achieve a good realistic approach, it will depend of our level of accuracy or on how many time we spent looking at nature. If we are looking for a stylization, it´s more difficcult imo cause we will have to find the correct brush to achieve the effect we´re looking for... so i wouldn´t talk about textures like something you add in a later stage, but like something you play since the beginning. Using a photo support would be another story :)
keep up the good work

Moonrage: Yeah, the contrasty sky was that way in the reference, so I painted it that way without really noticing. Thanks for seeing that!

About the portrait/line clarity, I couldn't agree with you more. I'll try harder!

Ricardo Robles: After reading what you said, I realized that I tend to simplify the shapes so that I can understand them and get them on the page, but never un-simplify them afterwards (if that makes sense). Thus removing the textured appearance-- I think.

And that goes for most objects... not just rocks.

Sorry for the lack of updates, I don't have much to show right now. I'll hopefully have more soon.

Lookin' good! Try not to use black and white though, it flattens the image. Your drawings are the shit. Your more monochromatic stuff is very solid. That enforcer up above is also very scary looking to fight in a game.

Your "smush face" on post #94, looks like it might have had two light sources, stick to one, like in your other portrait studies, look at the values on the neck vs the values on the left side of the face vs the right side. You can sometimes lose your values choosing colors. I know I do. :) Your values are what gives you pictures solidity. Your colors are you temperature and story and mood. :)

Keep it up brosef.

Philosiflo: Umm, yeah. I'm not totally sure what I was thinking when I started painting with the black... I don't think I've ever done that before. I'm pretty sure I was just tired/not thinking straight.

As for the scarf portrait. I picked it specifically for its two light sources, I wanted to try it out. Sort've a test to see if I could distinguish between the two color temperatures. I'm not sure if you can tell in the painting, but there is a cool light coming from the right (her left), and a warm light from the upper left(her upper right). It was crazy fun to paint, and I learned a ton.

Nice studies btw. Cheers.

You have a really nice variety of study, practice, exercise, and style. Your lines are very nice, and your paintings are getting there quickly with the studies! You are hitting the perspective of your figures generally okay, your studies you seem to get it right for sure- but if there is something missing, its definitely hardcore ass-whooping perspective. Watch Scott Robertson's first "perspective drawing" dvd from gnomon, and repeat what he does for a long time. It will not only increase your ability to draw cars and planes and tanks and other mechanical stuffnjunk, it will very much help the way you think and deal with the figure.

keep truckin'

FlyingPenguin
March 21st, 2011, 03:33 PM
Justin: Dang, solid advice. Perspective has always scared me for silly reasons. I always avoid it whenever possible, but I have been noticing that hiding from it drags my stuff down. Not much else to say other than, I'll get started on that. Thanks for the help.

Feil Magnus: Ah, I was actually talking about the raven picture, even though the advice still applies. And I did try that, I looked at my own shoulders and found a couple photos, but I just couldn't paint it right. Its really just a lack of hand-eye skills more that anything.

That last study I did was from ref, but I really just painting it because it had interesting color shifts.

Ludic: Glad you like it! Yup, thats the reason why I chose that photo. The transition looked even better in the photo, I was just trying to capture that. :D

Hey, just one for tonight. I had a couple questions to go along with it.

I made these today to test myself, how fast I could come up with four different concepts. The idea was just to make a rescue-type space suit, not too far into the future. It took me a couple hours, and I'm pretty pleased with the result, however...

Would these concepts ever be good enough to be considered pro?

Are they clean/descriptive enough?

Am I completely deluding myself?

Just wanted to know yours guys thoughts I guess. Thanks!!

1335202

Ricardo Robles
October 4th, 2011, 01:39 AM
Good work man, superb lighting going on here, specially on the last rock.
About the suits, they´re good giving the fact you did them in 2 hours. They seem to be a nice shape variation/lighting test. But I guess you could do it better in terms of design, imho. You said they´re based on a near future, but how near? From here to 20 years I guess they could use a bit more functional elements like a clearer impulse generator or a more integrated breath system. Always think on functional terms when you design techy things, or at least in a good balance between coolness and functionality.
You asked about the cleanliness, which is important to keep well in tech or industrial design, so I think maybe they deserve a bit more attention in the joint parts, just to define better the suit materials and the way they are built or produced.
Also there is the "rescue" purpose which you have to show somehow. Maybe they could have some extra packed suit or breathing system, medical packs, any kind of "rescue tools" or something which can show that purpose.
This is what I can see more or less, hope it helps you.
Anyways my favourites would be 2 and 4 right now, I guess they´re in the right direction giving your concept description.
Keep working good dude:)

FlyingPenguin
October 4th, 2011, 04:13 PM
Thanks Ricardo, I think you hit it right on the head. I spent some more time on the 2nd and 4th concepts, because I also thought they were the most effective. Still not sure if I pinned down the rescue aspect, but I think they are a million times more appropriate now in terms of design level. Thanks again, your comment has helped immensely.
