Rob Liefield is HORRIBLE. Every article i ever read about him had him talking about his creative uniqueness... he rips off EVERYTHING.

I read an article in Wizard about him and Todd McFarlane making ammends. He said he and Todd discussed the state of the industry and how bad it was. Mentioning these 'flash pan books' published to make quick money.

The pot calls the kettle black. What a dope.

Good find on that swipe site. A really good site was up a few years back called 'swipe of the week' but it's dead now. If you do a google search you can get some remainders of it. It had some really good finds. Roger Cruz is notorious for swiping Joe Mad artwork...

Beer Baron: That article's great. What a flaming, reaking pathetic ripp-off. How could Rob Liefield ever look at himself in the mirror and still be able to say "I'm good enough. I'm smart enough. And dog-gone it, people like me." I thought I WAS looking at Captain America untill I read it... Sad.

i think there was a lot of this type of crap in the comicbook industry during the 90's. its a real shame too. i stopped reading them because of guys like rob. i have a writer friend, however, that tells me there are some great new books on the shelves. who knows.

Man, when I picked up my xforce 1, I thought it was the bomb! His style was very appealing to a young kid like I was. Although I don't defend his seeming lazyness after image comics/youngblood stuff, his new mutants stuff was interesting, compared to the rest of the artists working, he stood out. pick up x-stinction agenda and see what chapters read the best, IMO first the jim Lee stuff, then Robs. My roommate actually has a few really cool peices of Robs art of xmen characters before Rob got on New Mutants. You can flame the guy, but he actually did some decent work.

Oh yeah! Almost a decade now since I had a high interest in the comic industry... wanted to become a comic book artist... still a thought these days...

But anyways... back then I penciled a couple pages to take to a convention in Orlando. FL... Leifield was one of the top guests... I just wanted a critic from him... so during the convention... I saw him at his booth...

He was setting up some action figures... and no one was around him... so I asked for a minute to get a critic... he said he was too busy and had to go... and he walked off... LOL! What a snob!... after that... I lost interest in his work...

Now Jeph Loeb was at his booth... he was very nice to give me a critic... Dan Fraga... where ever he is now... was another nice artist at another convention a decade ago... that took time to critic and answer questions...

So that's my input on Leifield...

Just to throw more fuel into the fire, here's an interview with Dan Fraga, a former co-worker with rob:
http://www.silverbulletcomicbooks.com/features/96658200045080,print.htm

And if you don't want to read through the whole article, here's the part I thought was funny, though I don't think Dan thought so... the interviewer is Rob Vollmar:

"RV: You were a big part of the Awesome Comics explosion that came to an abrupt halt when the financial backing suddenly pulled out... Was your ultimate decision to leave the company basically a financial one for you?

DF: No, it was personal. I worked for Rob for eight years. He was my best friend...he was my boss. That combo, doesn't work. He could insult me on a personal level but back himself with the fact he was my boss. It wasn't something that I could cope with anymore. Other things lead to my departure as well. I don't enjoy empty promises. When Awesome ran into "financial problems" the first time...I was asked by Rob to go get a job. I went to work for a clothing company called JNCO. I was a designer over there. It was a lot of fun, but I missed comics.

I came to Rob with a new proposal. He agreed, but used that as a carrot to make me work on title that I didn't want to work on, including drawing and inking unaccredited in Cable. It was too much. I left for a myriad amount of reasons.

RV: I remember that you had the Black Seed series that you ere developing for the company just before you left. At what point (time wise) did you propose your new series and at what point did you figure out that you couldn't work at Awesome anymore?

DF: I proposed it to Rob in July of '98...I left in August of '99.

RV: On Avengelyne #1 (Vol 3), you penciled over Rob's thumbnails and the end result, to me, looked a lot more like him than your own style. Did you find that confining, conforming to an Awesome "house style?" Did you feel it was expected of you to maintain that look?

DF: Yes. The first 5 pages of that book, I used Rob’s thumbnails as a guideline to work with. He yelled at me saying it wasn't very good and that I should just trace over his layouts. At one point I told him that I didn't want to be working on the book but he told me that if I wanted to do my book with him I'd have to do what he said. I was pretty pissed.

When I came to Rob in July with my proposition, it was with the understanding that I'd be doing my project right away. Instead he used it as leverage for me to do his bidding."

If he was in Hong Kong, he'd be dead by now

I don't blame him... Dan was a very nice artist in person... and someone who had a unique style... it's a shame he was held back...

Todd McFarlane and Rob where good friends at the beginning of Image Comics and some day Todd said in an interview something like: "... working with THAT kid again!? Only over my dead body!" ... ;)

The last time I saw Rob was @ 2001 SD Comic-Con.
He was buying "several" paintings from Travis Charest at the artist alley. I think he ended up with three or four. Can't really remember, or don't really care.

I will say this though.... Whomever got the Edward Scissorhands sketch that Travis was working on is one lucky dude. It was a pleasure watching him work on this piece even though it seemed like forever for him to complete it. The line for sketches was nuts. He was doing sketches in his hotel at night for people that asked for them earlier that day!

I'm pretty sure Rob is into buying others art. He seemed to be talking about a very large collection.

Rob's anatomy kills me everytime I see it nowadays. Hands, legs, arms, tiny feet. It's wonderful.

He was a necessary evil in comics though. But that time has passed.

you know....the funny thing about this link with the swipes.....if you know how to read spanish that is, is that the author, eventhough you can see both images, the original and "Liefeld's" and how identical they are...the author actually defends Liefeld and praises him as if he was a god!!!
saying that he improved on the original image, or how they look nothing alike.....it's funny as hell! but at the same time pissed me off!

Oh, I don't know. I think that even with the pidgin English translations that Google (http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=es&u=http://www.dreamers.com/adlo/comparaciones.htm&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dhttp://adlo.dreamers.com/comparaciones.htm%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DUTF-8%26oe%3DUTF-8) provides the irony comes shining through.
