OK I've been making quick sketches of people from my head and trying to figure out how I can make them look real... as if I drew it with a model sitting in front of me...

Im going to paint it and see how it turns out.. but let me know if you have any suggestions, to make it look more convincingly real...

and does this one look generic?

This is a great portrait; the facial expression is very good, it conveys a feeling of quiet contentment, while staying genuine. i really like your shading and techniques with the hair/beard etc.
I can agree that the left eye is a little odd, but it doesn't kill the drawing. keep it up :)

color version

I decided to color it to try to push the realism of it.. with the consideration of the fine comments that I received.. working with no ref on paintings is a great exercise

thanks guys

nice. The color version fixes the perspective problem with the left cheek/eye area. I think the if you molded the form in that area a little bit more, maybe with a rim of reflected light on the edge, it would look a lot better...right now it's all one value behind the nose.

The mouth still looks askew in terms of the center line of the face, but it almost works as just an expression the dude is making.

in the skeetch i think that teh only problem is the eyes, same with the painting
in the drawing the mouth was awesome and i think it fell a little off base in the painting.
