A terminally-ill Dutch woman will select a recipient for one of her kidneys in the latest production from Endemol, makers of Big Brother.

The Big Donor Show will be shown in the Netherlands on Friday despite calls from the Dutch Government for it to be scrapped, according to Newspaper De Telegraaf.

Broadcaster BNN said the programme would go ahead in which a 37-year-old, named only as Lisa, would choose a recipient from one of three people with kidney problems.

BNN said the programme was designed to highlight the problems facing people needing organ transplants and was also a tribute to BNN founder Bart de Graaff, who died of kidney failure five years ago, despite several transplants.

Political critics in the Netherlands have called the show "wretched" and unethical, news reports said.

The row comes after Channel 4 was rapped in the UK by broadcasting watchdog Ofcom over the racist bullying in the last series of Celebrity Big Brother involving Jade Goody and Indian actress Shetty.

How can they claim it's unethical? It's not like they're gonna hunt down some innocent people and remove their kidneys against their will, is it?
I fail to see what's the big deal with this program.

Edit:
Aha. I actually read the text now, and see that I misunderstood the concept. Anyway, I still can't see why this is such a big problem.

I personally am disgusted at the concept of such a program. Not only are the makers making a profit off a terminally ill womans condition but they are also bringing in three people in with kidney problems to win the thing that will help their condition. What happens to the other two? "oh im sorry you didn't get the kidney, hope that problem doesn't become serious and sorry about building your hopes up and dashing them for the sake of tastless entertainment for the masses, anyway bye" It is highly immoral and indicitive of the increasing extremes people and companies go to to make a quick buck

The show just finished (I'm from the Netherlands) and it turned out that the show was a HOAX. The woman was an actor, and wont give away her kidney (yet hehe).

Right before they announced who "won" the kidney, BNN stopped the show and told the audience about what was really going on. The woman was an actor but the 3 candidates were really sick and are still on the long list, but ofcourse they knew about what was going on behind the scenes.

BNN said the programme was designed to highlight the problems facing people needing organ transplants and was also a tribute to BNN founder Bart de Graaff, who died of kidney failure five years ago, despite several transplants.

Exactly, and it was a brilliant way of doing this because the whole world is talking about organ donations right now.
