i have desided to take drawing more serious and take more time to create more correct figures.

ive taken a look at the gesture dvd that vilppu made and started to experiment with the technique , these are the results for today

Reference is very helpful to getting believable anatomy. If the anatomy is off, anyone can tell even if they are not an artist. My best suggestion is to use reference, like for your latest COW entry...you could have used a piranha or angler fish reference so that you could have achieved a believeable head and then used some animal and/or fish reference for the rest...hope this helps.

The cow entries are cool, but if you are going to take drawing seriously and try to improve, you need to do more figure studies. A lot more, as in everyday if possible. Really concentrating on the basics- anatomy, proportions, perspective, etc...will help you improve in every way. I would suggest putting the cows aside for a few months or so and concentrate on nothing but figure studies. It might get cumbersome but stick to it. Take some classes, get some books, or just draw what's around like you did with your father. That's where you're going to learn the most and the best. Best wishes :)

the_allejo05
June 15th, 2007, 06:22 PM
nice..Piranha is right..until you master the human figure in is totality, the other studies could be done just for fun..once you can draw a human and paint its skin..everything else is a piece of cake.. ..i recomend you to copy some master drawings..they will teach tons..avoid photographs for now..

my study of the human muscles
the back part is drawn a little to much to the left so it isnt 50/50 as you can see

im going to do some more anatomy sketches, my proportions on this one are wrong
i was to focused on the muscles so i forgot to build up the body in a proper way

I suggest to listen to Piranha Clan and the_allejo05. I said it more then once, first learn the basics..
And more then a couple of sketches, fill a whole sketchbook with anatomy studies..I really dont think you'll improve your skills alot with the way you are trying now.

Just a tip.

Ow and btw, people are trying to give comments. A response would be nice, now it seems like you are ignoring them.

Liking the eye and mouth studies very much. Defenitly see improvement here, but I would defenitly like to see more anatomy sketches. I know its more fun to draw stuff out of your imagination but you really can grow more on that aspect.

But good start man! Keep it coming I will be looking.

I really like the Cow 088 concept!
As for your cgs like http://share.digicomm.be/creatureconcept_3.png in your first post, try to avoid having plain default gradient backgrounds. Having brush strokes here and there at least makes it look less blatantly digital :)

try to do some *really* big drawings.. get rid of some of the symbols you tend to use (hands, eyes).. symbols are nice to use in say comic strip style stuff, but they can only get you so far.. they don't work in any given situation, you know what i mean?
mind the proportions of the bunny girl too, i think her legs are a bit too short

Yet another school exercise, Design a tower like the Tower of Babel.
So i desided to go with the concept of atlantis and wrote this little story as a background story for my tower

Atlantis home of the Atlantians, one of the greatest empires the world has ever known.
The Atlantians were the chosen ones among mankind; they were gifted with knowledge to create superior technology and the strength to fight whoever wanted to take their divine existence.

The Atlantians were godlike and the decided there king should be equal to the gods and live among them, so they started building a tower so great that there king could watch over his people like the gods do over the world.

Zeus and the other gods were not so keen on the idea of a man living amongst them and started hating the Atlantians for wanting even more then the gods already gave them. On the day of completion of the tower when the king could get his first gimps of the gods Hades created a hole in the ocean, sucking entire Atlantis and his tower to the depths of the underworld leaving only the royal palace above water to remind the king that he was no more than a human and he never will be.

Hey Raven, cool sketchbook you have going here..

I did a little paint over to show you what i mean when i say that you haven't quite got the 'personal triangle' of the babies face. Its a common trick when painting portraits to maintain a resemblance to note the triangle that is formed by the pupils and the spot below the nose. This is different and unique on each person you see. Apparently this triangle also never changes shape that much as we age, that why you can still recognize someone after a period of time....

Any ways. keep up the good work dude ;-)

Hey ravenslayer, nice sketchbook, don't remember if I ever left you a comment :)

If I can give you some very important advice.. draw more from life, a lot more. I know, it's what everyone sais. But noone does it. You should draw from life every spare second you got. On the bus, while you're on the phone, waiting for the train. That should be the way you live. When I meet new people in school, they always say, hey you're the one who's always drawing. That's who you gotta be :)

Where do you got to school btw?

polydrawer
March 6th, 2008, 04:20 PM
tnx for the tip jens :)
I doodle to much in my free time, usually things i don't post here but i'll try to do what you say and draw more of the people and things that are around me ^^
I'm following DAE at the moment because it teaches me the things i enjoy doing, but a side effect of that is that i also get courses i don't like doing or I'm not very good at.

I was searching for another school some months back because i wanted to focus more on the drawing aspect but i couldn't really find one here in belgium that really focuses on drawing, usually the drawing aspect is a side course that doesn't get that much attention.

anyway thanks for dropping by and for the useful information :)

Hi raven, ive already seen ur stuff on DAExp.
U have a cool style of drawing.
But I wonder if it was ment to have the warriors mace floating above his shoulder instead of having it rest on it?

graf tnx for the comment :) and yes it was intended to have it "floating" in the air but i could have made it more realistic looking by making it rest on the shoulder.

but there's more that's off with the anatomy so i'll put more effort in my drawing the next time i have to draw a character

Pff even tough it's "vacation" over here for 2 weeks, i dont get much time to draw. Coding sucks up time and highpoly 3d modeling isn't a 5 second job either :p.
Here are a few robot speed"designs" i did for a new assignment for school
Subject: create a non humanoid/non transformer like/animal inspired but it cant be an animal type of robot

I'm going to do a bunch more of these and see were it takes me
the first two are my favorites at the moment so ill maybe make some variations on those too

Jonas Heirwegh
March 26th, 2008, 11:43 PM
When your having troubles with perspective just use a basic shape. for example the last one is totally out of perspective. just draw a basic shape for the head and make it more complex along the way.

Also dont ignore joints, joints can give alot of character to a robot, just draw a cilinder to start with for joints.

Play more with the shapes, top heavy, bottom heavy, big bulky or sharp and slik, etc...

I would also suggest to make a ref sheet ;)

Research is really key.

What is gonna be the function of your robot? Believe it or not but that question is gonna make your life alot easier. Form follows function, once you know the purpose of your robot and you do research for that specific purpose it will be alot easier to pump out ideas.
I'm not saying its gonna be easy, but it will be less difficult ;)

good luck.

Tnx for the advice epias
The refsheet is a really good idea and making as we speak ^^

I didn't want to choose a function to early because i tought it would narrow my options down for a design but maybe thats a good thing.
Oh yeah your 100% right on the perspective thing, i tend to trow away the basic rules when painting quick and that is one of the many things i shouldn't be doing.

Maerrick: tnx, they buildup of those stick figures are indeed inspired by the Loomis books. I like them allot because the dont take much time and really define the pose perfectly. I do have to do some more of them and more life drawing in general.

mysteryofalbesila: Tnx, still have allot to learn but i'm working on it :D

You should ALWAYS have a purpose or function in mind! :) As a concept designer you want to communicate something, you want to tell a story.

Your design choices are always based on the things you want to communicate or the story behind what you are trying to communicate.
That doesnt mean you have to make it complicated, it can be as simple as I want a military looking mech that has a specific purpose on the battlefield, and your design should reflect that.
Its good sometimes to just doodle random stuff, but for a project it isnt always helpfull.
Anyway just something to think about.

good luck

The three-wheel-robot looks nice! But the metal is not so convincing. Polish it. And a stronger yellow and strong blue will give a better effect. And switch the colour in the rusty/damaged parts to other then blue, but brown or the like with some light edges. And make he whole piece clearer - take a way the blur. Plus give it some shadow, especially on the wheels. The lights on the arms should reflect light on the metal edges, not just a round circle.

Keep it up!

Thanks for checkin' out my SB.

First of all, you're doing the right types of drawing, which is really important.
Although, more observational drawing from life would be good.
It doesn't have to anything fancy, draw anything and everything, not only are you adding to your visual vocabulary, it's just always training your hand eye coordination.

I think something you should try is blind contour drawing.
Sit down, pick an object and draw it without looking at the page.

This exercise really trains you to see and draw things as how they are, rather than the preconceived image in your head.

Anyway, keep doing what you're doing. You're on the right track.

My first practice with acryl paint, I never really did do any traditional painting and thought lets give it a go.

So i went out and bought myself 2 starterkits(atleast i think it are) 1 acryl and 1 oilpaint. I figure it wont be the best quality paint that i'm using since it was like 7 euro a kit which has 12 tubes of paint and 2 brushes.
So i started with the acryl since i read its the best one to start out with and i tried to paint something to see how the paint reacts.

anyway here it is, aint much but it's a start i guess :s

Where are your updates? I 'd like to follow the progress of some people :)

polydrawer
October 22nd, 2008, 05:25 PM
Do you mean updates in general or on the paint?, i decided to use the paint above as a final because i now know the bigger flaws in the piece.
I would have to redo the entire paint and because of a lack of time (i'm still following the entire DAE curriculum btw) i wasn't able to do that, but for my next paints i now know what to think about before i start the painting process.

Here are the character design sheets i handed in today

nice z brush stuff, that torso could use some smoothing on top of those clay tubes tho , but nice anatomy on it, and i really dig that akuma head. I think the Hans Teeuwan portrait is the best one because of the way its painted, the brush strokes seem to be more opaque and less layered than the others , also the range of tones is a lot better. Keep it up

hey some interesting stuff. i love the digital sculps. especially the will smith one that looked cool.
last piece is coming along, personaly i liked the burning ship in the background, added some cool drama and interesting light. I'm a big fan of drastic shadow so for me with the mermaid one you could maybe add some darker more drastic and defining shadow it may seem to give the people a more physical edge and bring them out, the smudging, almost but not quite makes the image abit flat, anyway its coming along nice!

You got mad Zbrush skills. Good job on the Brad Pitt one. The Will Smith one is good but needs some more tweaking to make him look more like Will Smith. The sea monster one is really good too but there seems to be a gap between your sculpting skills and your drawing skills. You might want to give that some more attention. Drawing from life is key.

Anyways dude, keep up the art work!
