Windmaker

Nice studies you have:)
You seem to have a tendency of drawing the legs too short though. Your figures sometimes look a bit like you're watching them from higher up. Maybe it's because you're sitting too close to the model. This tends to result in drawing the upper part of the model (the one closer to your eyes) drawn bigger than the rest of it.
Try to find your highest and lowest point (and maybe the two widest points), and then the midpoint of the model, before starting to actually draw the figure. This way you'll be sure not to distort it. Always observe the model and study their proportions.
Good luck!

great kick off to your sketchbook man. lots of great traditional
pieces in here. keep it up.
i agree with Windmaker. while your muscles are good, the proportions seem a bit off on a few. but keep up the practice, like you are. good luck!

Hey, nice SB! Keep up the practice on anatomy! You'll make your way!! ;) Really good traditional work, like the portrait- and treestudies. :)

I'm looking foreward to see more of your work!!

Hey there, thank you for writing such a detailed and well thought critique in my sketchbook, much apprechiated. :)
Your life drawings above are quite impressive, I hope I can do as well as you in several years. I think the red ones came out best, what's that medium? Red chalk? I recently bought some red chalk, great stuff. If only I knew how to sharpen it without breaking the whole thing into pieces... Whatever medium it is, you handle it well.
Anyway, good attempt at drawing a skeleton from your mind, this stuff is not easy as you already pointed out. You can try to do generic front, side and backviews (along with inside elevations and topviews) first, then move on to more expressive poses (maybe use master drawings as pose reference). Take a close look at the pelvis and the curvature of the spine. One thing you should also look into is the forearm, how the radius rotates around the ulna and such.
Interesting website you have there, I read your thoughts about drawing from imagination, great article. You have a nice gallery there, I hope you include some more of your work in this sketchbook.
Good stuff all around here, keep the lead burning...

Isn't that the cast from the Loomis book? Sweet that your school has a copy!
Really nice studies in here. The perspective and basic shape studies will particularly help a lot. Anatomy is good too, but I'm seeing a lot of short necks and legs, never by much, but enough to be off. The pastels are nice too (I never learned to handle the stuff.)
Also for anatomy, something I never realized the importance of until about a month ago was doing figures from imagination. Even if the first batch looks like crap, they really are necessary for locking all these studies in your head. I know I've been kicking myself over all the studies I've done that ended up pointless because I didn't draw from imagination later and forgot what I learned!
Keep it up!

shobunkin , thanks pastel is not the medium i like hehe weird
cup of jOe, yes is the same from the Loomis book, but i bought it at one of the sites, i plan to own many sculptures but they are a bit expensive hehe so far i got this bust and a crapy copy of Michelangelo's david my parents brought from Italy. I quit MIms studios about 2 years ago in order to pursue arquitecture, now i study by myself , i more or less know what i have to do..a lot of stuff though hehe, cause i plan to be a muralist sometime in the future..Pastels i just treat like charcoal or any medium i guess, even watercolors i used it as I paint oil ,my favorite medium. On imagination i draw them often those four men fighting where done from my head..but yeah im still short of mastering the figure, everytime i look at any masterdrawing i cry hehe, but hogarth studies on basic geometric parts are helping a lot..and i gotta concentrate on the skeleton from life..
here's a bunch more

Hey man, great work! Great effort! Keep up the studies- your anatomy and perspective are already showing huge improvements in this thread. If you haven't already you should check out Bammes, "The artist's guide to human anatomy." Nice rendering with pastels. I "f"ing hate working with those damn things!:)

Hey there, just drop in to thank you for your explanations about red chalk in my thread, I'll keep fumbling with that medium. Glad you included more work from your site, it's definately worth it.
I'm thrilled to see I'm not the only one who's doing the line exercises from The American Drawing Book, thought I was the only one who actually bothers to do these.
Keep it up, the only crit I have is watch your freehand boxes, not all lines converge as they should do in some of these. Since you're studying architecture, I'm sure you'll eliminate this in no time. :)

I hate to drag the conversation awaay from critiques again, but could you point me towards the place you bought the bust? Or even just it's name. I've also been looking into skulls (that aren't insanely expensive) if you have any suggestions.
The skulls from life are great, although there seems to be some problems in the bridge of the nose from the frontal views. Also for anatomy (though this may just be me), but one of the things that I find helps me immensely helpful is next to a muscles name, I write what it does. This make memorization much easier.
Keep up the great work!

cup of joe , yeah here's the site http://www.elementsofhome.com/drawing_casts/ not bad if you ask me, and i got the finish as shown, also for the skeleton http://www.anatomywarehouse.com/anatomycharts/Skeleton-Charts-Models.htm , I got the first quality i think, which was a bit expensive, but keep in mind that this is forever hehe, you can disassemble the skeleton in basic parts, legs, skull arms and torso, this is what im using from my individual bone studies, later on i plan to get the disarticulated skeleton with the painted insertion parts because at the end you have to know each bone like the back of your hand, its imperative, i find it still difficult to see trough a model without that inner structure knowledge. heres another site with more casts that the other does not have.. http://www.statue.com/items.asp?CartId=1-EVEREST-0978765TGCYL60&Cc=DRAWCAST&tpc=
taxman , thanks yeah i plan to follow the course of study from the american drawing book..it really improvers my drawing ..more so than any charles bargue plate I have done hehe..yeah the cubes are from life, i close one eye to do these since drawing from life is more difficult than just azuming the lines converge..although keep in my most of the images here are freaking distorted because of the camera..it tends to bubble up my drawings..
more work..ive been a bit lazy because i have been watching La Copa America hehe (the oldest world soccer tournament)

Thanks a ton for those links! Erk, that cast is a tad (aka entirely) out of my price range, but I'll almost definitely be getting that skull!
The geometric figures are great as usual, but watch out for those white spaces where the canvas shows through in the pastel pieces. The only other problem I can see is a few off lines in the toruses (sp?).
Keep up the hard work man!

thanks man..yeah the casts are a bit expensive, but it beats going to the museum all the time hehe..
yeah the toruses are quite a challenge to draw....i used plastiline to sculpt it so then i could draw them..so is not quite perfect..although im aware my drawings arent either...
that is not pastel ..is oil..is hard to cover up the surface nicely with the size brushes i have and still maintain clean colors while fresh..and the size of it it aint that big either hehe...
