So, I just 'finished' this piece. Its for a school project where we need to make a CD to represent Catcher in the Rye. I got the job of the esthetic's on the project so here is the front of it. We're using a dvd case so this is about the size of it. It the first piece in painter that I've finished and been happy with.
Yes, there is no background, there may be one though.

1. the proportions of the head seems weird. 2. you should be less random with highlights and darks. get a harmony in value. and get it more consistent. for example, you have those edges of puzzlepieces some have higlight other dont. also, light on the front of the face has lights pretty random. 3 think about what you want to show the audience. do you want to show a rendered ear? or do you want to show the puzzlepieces in his face? get more attention to the puzzlepieces and keep the ear simple. the puzzle is you selling point. same goes for the face, keep it pretty simplistic.

good luck. btw i love the concept very cool idea. good luck

Here's the new one. I tried to harmonize the light a bit and I've been working on the highlights too.
Thanks a lot both of you.

Personally I think the areas under the chin, nose and eyebrow ridges should be darker. It looks a bit flat right now.

hey dude, in your last update, i cant see any change"? is this me or is the file old or something? well, still i think you should avoid the attention to the ear, it will do a lot good to the piece i think... would love to see the attention go more to puizllepieces somehow, good luck!!!

Dayo - I see what you mean and I've started to fix that.

Teh Gosu - Well, there was only one bit in that pic. I accidentally loaded up a quick save and was too lazy to put up the right one.
I've been working on it though and Been messing with the ear and shading.
<< All that was on that was a highlight on the cheek. I'll post it when I like it more so

Proportions are all messed up, contrast is very low, and the colors are weird. I don't know the intent of this outside of it being a cd cover, but right now it's very visually unappealing, and if you want to claim it as a style, I'd seriously consider revising the style just because it isn't eye catching in any way shape or form. CD covers along with any other cover art typically is intended to relay an idea to the viewer (and potential listener/reader/whacker offer) and so far the only thing that I can see this saying is.. well.. nothing really.

Edit: Also, your light sources are random at best right now.

Sepulverture - That's why I'm here. I'm here to learn. I've no desire to claim this as a style but atm this is the best I can do. I've been doing many sketches/figures but hey... I'll keep workin' on it to get it to look right.

@Kamikazebob: I know you are, I've been following your 'Fractured face' thread in the W.I.P. section. And added some paint-over suggestions there. Look here (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?p=1331486#post1331486)

Keep at it, your ability to learn, determination and persistance will pay off in the end, no doubt! :^^:

Gotta cover all bases if possible. so many people try to disguise their lack of knowledge as actually being a style of some sort.

Wasp - Wow dude. Thats pretty damn sweet. Thanks bunches for the paint over. I now know what you mean with the cheeks n the eyes.

Sepulverture - I'm almost insulted...(j/k) I admit to my lack of knowledge just enough to improve but not enough to sound like an utter moron xD
