Congrats to myalias for winning challenge #27!

The Rules:
Anyone ages 13-19 may submit an entry at any time before the deadline. Please host your image on a remote image-hosting site instead of uploading it to the CA server. This makes it much easier to transfer it to the poll thread.

The Topic:
Scene: The Outbreak
Open to interpretation. Thanks to Wolfbane for the topic suggestion.

The Deadline:
Wednesday, June 6th at midnight PST
Two weeks

And lastly, I turned 20 this past week, and thus I've aged out for these challenges. It's been fun, but I'd appreciate it if anyone would like to take over fore me. I'll keep it running in the meantime, but let me know if you'd like to volunteer.

:yayca:

No, the challenge is to draw your interpretation of "the outbreak" :)

I'm a unleash an outbreak of whoop ass on all ya'll! And ya'll be like "ahhhhhhhh! my eyes!" and you'll start crying blood and sperm.

I saw 28 weeks later so I'm gonna paint something hopefully different to it.
But I'm tempted to paint the zombies eating French people at the end. Damn you French and your natural chick magnetness.
I suppose it's a pity this topic wasn't featured for teen challenge 28...

Oh btw plate you deserve and 'eye' IMO for your services to the CA community.

Good luck dudes and dudets. Wanna see lots a entries!

Waah cool topic!!
there's so much that I can think of on this one.. Hard to pick something.
Well.. I'll do sketches!

I'm thinking about taking over the Teen Challenges from you Plate.. Just not sure about it because I have lots of work to do.. How much time does it take per challenge? Probably about 1,5 hours right? Think I could handle that.

I'll tell you when I know.

Hey everyone I think Ill enter this contest, I have to build up my portfolio to get to the college I want so this is great practice for me and an addition to my portfolio. Two birds with one stone. :bashful:

Edit: Sorry but is it mandatory that our final piece is solely based on traditional sketches or can we use 3D Rendered images or photo sources to add to the final piece?

inkerton

Could we submit something that's 3-D? Or does it have to be 2-D?
Sure, 3-d would be fine. Just keep in mind that the topic requires a scene, not just a character model or something.

Sorry but is it mandatory that our final piece is solely based on traditional sketches or can we use 3D Rendered images or photo sources to add to the final piece?
Again, 3-d is acceptible, and you're welcome to use photo reference, of course. If you're referring to doing a paint-over, however, I would discourage it for the sake of your own learning. We're all here to practice, after all, and there's only so much to be learned from blindly copying.

Noë - 1.5 hours sounds about right. Setting up the poll and all isn't bad, the tricky part is settling on topics people will like. There was a topic suggestion thread a while back, but it's been buried to the depths of the forum over time.

And thanks to everyone who congratulated me on getting old. :P

Hi all.

It's long time i wanted to play on CA, and these week i decided to enter on this challenge. ^^
English isn't my first language, so, sorry for my english, hope it isn't too bad.

I'm not really sure i understood the subject so i'll post my image and if you don't see why it's in the subject then i'll try to explain it... or make another one...

Hope you like it.

Edit: I've tried to change a few things after the paperX's advices. Hope it look better.

Kevzip: hey man great stuff, welcome to CA :)

good perspective and lighting, altho his clothes could be more defined (it looks like a...jacket?over a shirt? but his arms seem to be bare :S)

anyhow, try adding a border with your username on it so it would be easier for the poll :)

PS: i would suggest using imageshack as your image host, as right now i can't see your image unless I use a proxy (Great Firewall of China :( )
PPS: don't worry your English is fine :)

Hi, this is my first time entering this challange, wish i had found out about it before :) . Didnt really get the time to finish it, since im going away on vacation to Bulgaria today (could bring my laptop, but i'd rather be stuck with just pencil and paper for a while).

The story behind the picture is kinda a classic zombie tale; Not far in the future, a company is doing experiments on human beings at a hidden reasearch lair, they dump all the corpses and toxic wastes at and old cemetary. And voila, thats how you create a zombie virus outbreak :P

evil- crit, i think the composition could use some work, eye is led to the top of the picture which doesn't help the piece much. lots of potential!

I guess I'll give the teen challenge a shot while I'm still young enough, if only to help me get into a drawing routine. Because I'm sure as hell not getting involved to win.

Anyway, I did it like this because I assumed that most people would be doing zombies so I tried to stay away from that theme a little, but now I just hope I didn't stray too far from what could conceivably be called "the outbreak"

I tried to encorporate a couple different styles into this.

Also, the comic-style speech bubble is basically making fun of the way the news stations often try to make you believe you could very well die if you don't stay up late to watch their program.

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i41/Ladnav/MassHysteria.jpg

Oh, and just to be clear, the freaky red-head is one of the lunatics mentioned on the screen and he just killed the guy in the chair. There's a trail of blood there but it may be too dark to see. I lost a lot of color when I uploaded the image.

Hey Kevzip
Im absolutely digging the enviro (the floor --> :xpld: )
I think the character needs some refinement though, it feels as if it doesnt have the same quality of the enviroment.
And do you have a high res version?

Kevzip
May 30th, 2007, 01:19 PM
I've updated my first post.

paperX > Thank you for the advices, i've tried to change the things you said me
about the character. And i added a border and created an account on
imageshack, hope it's ok now.

Lewis > Thank you. Hope the character looks a bit better after the few changes.

paperX

Kevzip: hey man great stuff! his clothes make a lot more sense now, plus i can see the picture fine now too (you dont actually have to create an account on imageshack to upload pictures by the way :P) and also um...if i was you i'd refine the areas starting from below his knees...(can't really distinguish his shoes from the floor :P) they should also be lit a bit by the reflected light from the floor and not totally in shadow :)but what you have right now its pretty damn nice, good job man :)

Daneril: hey man, finally a zombie piece eh :P i'd suggest you tone down a bit on the textured brushes and focus on your rendering...especially on the zombie in question, define your light sources, study how the values should be affected and also try using some other colours rather than a darker shade of the same colour...oh yeah...more contrast would help :)
sorry if i seemed a bit harsh...just wanted to point you in the right direction :)

Evil_Sloth: hey man the enviro is looking good but i agree with asoir that the composition could use some work, the stairs and i think its a ledge or a roof (?) in the foreground really aren't doing it for me :S

Weeda: hey man...pretty neat idea but im not sure its executed as well as you intended at the moment...the transition from left to right in the 3 different styles seem to really clash with eachother rather than help the piece as a whole...its really hard to crit your piece though, as it is obvious that its very experimental and personal so i wont try and force you to change anything, just watch out for your rendering in general (some of the points i mentioned to Daneril, you could also take a look at)
I was thinking (just what a random idea of mine) since you already have a comic style speech bubble, you can expand on that and maybe separate them in to comic panels...:S

I'm gonna start working on mine soon...will post a wip in the next couple of days i think :) keep working hard guys! :yayca:

Hey all!
I've been messing around with this.
I want to do a girl in a straitjacket who is escaping from some kind of psychiatric hospital. The girl will be center of attention.
I'm not sure what to do with colours yet, I think white TL light on the girl and warmer light from the door. And greens and blues for the walls.

Character sketch and environment perspective sketches

147789
photoshop sketchie, I think this is going to be the way the environment is going to look, the values aren't right yet.

Will work on it more.. soon, I hope.
But I have to do a lot of maths too.

Noë, are you going to use that exact pose from the pencil sketch?
I'd wish you worked it to be more of "escape"... a bit of a "pretty girl in the wind" -thing going on there right now.
If she's supposed to be running fast, add more strenght to her legs (they need to be pushing, pushing her away from the hospital!), maybe have the head push more forwards aswell.

I'm gonna give it a try.

I'd like to add a crit to the ones you've gotten Evil Sloth; I would like to see a more thought out lighting composition. Right now the wip looks better then the update actually... imo. But most things are very similar in lighting, which makes the painting look like one blend. I say experiment about with the lighting 'till you find something cool, that brings forth the main action, the focal point. and let of the darkness and contrast a bit. :) sorry for the preaching man, but it feels like the potential is alot bigger then the quality the pic is at right now. lookin forward to the result brotha!:^^:

plus I'm pissed of at Noe for stealin my straitjacket idea! (jk)
