ghost woman from sketch to painting

this piece is for a magazine artical on real life ghosts in Chicago. :eek:
This ghost is named Resurrection Mary. Supposedly Mary likes to hitchhike along the streets of Chicago. A number of people have said to have picked her up.

Hey! I live in Chicago and we heard this ghost story all the time as kids! I especially remember that the iron bars of the cemetary gate were supposed to be melted or discolored in two spots, the spots where her hands supposedly tried to pry the gates open! Spooky! Nice piece, complements the ghost story very well. I can definitely see this being Resurrection Mary. The only thing I might change would be the black background; it kinda kills the depth of the illustration a little. Maybe add fog, or hint at more trees...something to break up that solid black. Asdie from that, great job! I especially like her solid white eyes (almost like a Greek statue) and the way you handled her transparency. Excellent.

Is this a mix of 3d elements and digital painting? The ghost itself is rendered very well and has a nice luminescent quality. The environment, elements like the headstones, leaf cover, fence, detract a bit from the image. There's too much of a difference between the '3d' elements and the painted figure in terms of rendering and resolution.

The edges of the headstones are too sharp. I think it may help if you painted over the background elements to achieve a more painterly look.

yeah i heard that Resurrection Mary is just about the most famous ghost in Chicago. that's some spooky stuff. we got a haunted street here in Toronto called "Old Finch" where this girl ghost lives (supposedly).

the copy for the article is going to go on the top of the pic (in the black area) so hopefully it'll look a little better.

blackhand: thx for the comment. it's all done in photoshop but what you said is very true. after lookin at it again i would definitely say that the textures need to be toned down. or the ghost bumped up...
