Oh and a w.i.p.... If I ever come round to finishing it. The subject is quite cliché but I've never done one.

I would suggest some more blending on the last soldier person, I think when you look close, some spots are sloppy, while others have a nice clean finish I was looking for.

Your sketchbook looks great. you'll have to repost that last picture when and if you get some more work done on it, i'd be interested to see how it turns out

Hey Gilles,
There's really great stuff in here I must say. I'm really enjoying those sketchbook pages.
On the last one I'd say get a little more blocky in the sky, use some higher opacity or whatever, to get things clearer, and have more volume.
Keep it up fellow Dutchie :teeth:
Love,
Marleen
P.S. Hey.. Didn't I see you last summer during the Dutch sketchgroup meeting on the boat? :P

You said the one with the mech suit was cliche' but who cares! It's important that you draw whats in your head and not to limit yourself. Well you don't have that problem....hehe~
Great GREAT work here. Love the contrast in every piece.

June 6th, 2007, 03:37 PM
Great stuff man. I'd love to see the image in post 4 finished. it doesn't matter how cliche' the subject is, what matters is how you portray it. If your version is fresh and original then it might breath some new life into an old idea.
great sb man!

Ped454> Thanks, I can't remember using the pallette knife is any of the pictures... thanks though :)
KtCruit 57> Well, that's what happens when I rush stuff... does fit the sketchbook though. ;)
Baum> Working on it!
Noe> Thanks fellow Duthie, I might follow up on your points.
Zoroko> Thank you. I know it isn't such a big deal, sometimes I get frustrated with my own limitations. I always want to be more "original" but I see now that it doesn't matter as long as I enjoy what I'm making.
Renier van der West Hey Thanks, I'm working on finishing that one... stay tuned for the end result!
Here's some recent stuff.

Hi Folks, time for a small update.
Two things I made during "loading time breaks" at work. First one is a quickie with pencil and the other one is with a ballpoint pen. They are a bit stiff...
http://www.illuminent.nl/PHP/albums/userpics/10001/riot_cop2.jpg http://www.illuminent.nl/PHP/albums/userpics/10001/flagcarrier.jpg
Soon I will an update with more color work.

Hiya :)
I just went through your site.. It has some very cool stuff in it :) I remember seeing some of the concepts a while ago on the updated SLS site.
I think on some of the character concepts you have put the eyes too high up in the head for the normal proportions, you may have intended the character to have the eyes that high on purpose, but I must say it looks a little odd and I saw it repeated on various character concepts. (But then again, they were mostly from 2005.. so they were pretty old I guess)
I definately dig the big tower concept with the cold green-ish colours.. Very awesome! Oh and your machines and vehicles look very cool. You have a way with the structure and the lines that really impresses me.
Oh and I really liked the dynamic poses of the characters.
Stuff to work on would probably be the more refined digital paintings, they tend to look a bit messy because of working with low opacity brushes and going over stuff a lot. The line stuff looks awesome, but values are quite often not easy to read.
So well.. Good luck on finding yourself a new job.. You do have some nice skills in your advantage ^^
Love
Marleen
P.S. and I would like to see an update (ofcourse)

Blaze Firestorm, RaistlinTheDark, spudstudios, schlichte and Dolleater87 Thanks for the very kind words, it really gives a boost hearing you guys dig my work!
Noë Thanks for taking the time to go trough my (o;d) stuff. I get what you are saying about the eyes... I never really noticed it till now. I love that you saw my SLS work, but yeah it's getting old now. That low opacity-brush thing is bothering me as well, I hope to get rid of it soon :)
Kir Nuyts Well, I'm not working at SLS anymore... so I can't really say how things are going there :P I'm currently looking for a new studio.
Anyway, thanks for the reply!
Jushra Jup, all of it is ballpoint and ink. I try to get more loose in my work and working with ink really keeps it going fast. Cheers.
Teh Gosu No problem dude, hope it was of any use. Goodluck with your work! Cheers.
Okay, time for another update... it's not much but that is because I currently working at a Mod. It's taking most of my free-drawing-time.
The tentacle Pirate has timelapse video with it... but I can't seem to get it rendered correctly... anyway, I might post the video later.

Thanks a lot DanielC and Renier van der West!
RaistlinTheDark > Hehe, well I draw with pen and ink so once I made a fck-up I have to live with it. In this case I think he's just standing in an weird angle ;)
Wheeljack18 > Thanks, it's more inspired by than really MSG4 stuff... I make up my own stuff and barrow the rest. It's a bit of fan-art exploring the MSG universe.
Lelle> Wow, what a compliment! Thank you.
Papparazzi> Thanks for the kind words! I wish I was an editorial artist, for starters it would mean that the bill collectors wouldn't be kicking down my door every week ;). I think that by living in a boring place the mind wonders off and that helps with coming up with the designs. Anyway, thanks buddy.
Okay, here's a small teaser of something that I've been working on, it's a page from a comic about my character Hard-Spider. It's set in the MGS universe and it is not an official project. More like fan art. Let me know if you what you think.

I like a lot of the ideas you have, I dig the glowy hands and such. I think if you devoted a little more attention each objects texture and how to render them differently you could get a little more believability to the designs. Does that make sense? Your work has a nice dimensional quality to it.

Camara, Kjrr, mysteryofalbesila, Smokey186, smokenmirrors, and Jelluh - Thank you, I does me good to read your positive reply's!
DanielC - Thanks man, Hmmm, I think you are right about the background... I might change it once I find the PSD again :)

STANIforth - Hey Buddy, yeah... I guess it would be a cocknocker or ballbasher :) Nice to know you dig my recent stuff, see you around. Cheers.
Epias - Hey dude, I currently work at Pivotal Games in Bath, UK. I had to move country in order to land myself another job as a concept artist.
Tamte - Thanks, I think that you are right... though I don't really get everything you say :). I think that since these are sketches I don't spend as much time on them as some of the other work I produce. I do however see your point and I might wanna give it a bit more thought and time next time. Cheers.

Illas-Hir it's great! I like the helmets and all the rest of it!
It would match perfect in Warhammer or Lord of the Rings.
Great work really!

I love how you represent virtual reality in concrete and unusual ways, and the solidity and weight everything has.
Right now a lot of the focus in these just seems to be on standing around and looking cool; I'd love to see your take on something dynamic and action packed.

Man! Really nice stuff in here, especially like the smaurai concepts.
The last one could maybe use a little more dynamic pose..imo his right arm is working a bit against the flow therefore it looks less dramatic.
Great stuff !! Keep em coming!

Thanks people! Much appreciated, I'll reply soon! :)
A quick update... I need to continue with work in a minute.
Here's quick painting I did for a forum competition, fight my character. The dark knight thing was someone else's design and my character had to kill it. I had less than 24 hours to make... together with my daytime job and all that didn't leave me much time. I spend less than 3 hours on it.

Just get bather and bather , the last one , looks like a fight came out really good , i think your character totally owned that other one . Ya i have the same problem , specially in this period when all the exams gather. And i have lots of paintings to do and recover at the studio. If i had to critique something , it wold be the blood on the chainsaw blades, looks kinda weird, kinda like stains . but you will figure it out. Cheers

Thanks folks! I really appreciate the feedback!
Here's the first of (hopefully) many more, I'm redesigning some Street Fighter characters as if they were living down my street. So, real world characters that you could walk into in the supermarket.
First up is Sakura, she's grown up and is a fashion student in Milan.

Hey guys,
Thanks for the comments, I really appreciate it! Please don't get mad if that I haven't replied to the comments. I will do it soon...
The last months have been crazy, the game studio I worked for shut down and I moved back to Holland where I now work as a concepts artist at Triumph Studios, maker of the Overlord game. In my "free" time I work on illustrating the fantasy novel of a friend of mine. I'm really enjoying myself but I have barely any time to work on personal stuff anymore.
Here's some stuff I posted in the finished section before:
