I am looking at VFS, SCAD, Ringling, Full Sail and or Academy of Art in SF. Most of the schools look great for animation, but what about 3d modeling? I am more interested in lighting, textures, and modeling. My dream would be working in the game industry or perhaps performing automotive or architectural designs. Is an extensive art foundation necessary to being a good 3d computer artist? How important is it to also learn the software tools? I'm really thinking of going to Full Sail for computer animation and trying to break in on the technical side. Full Sail seems to focus on Maya which is the hardest to learn? So being good at Maya makes it easier to learn other 3d programs? VFS and Academy of Art also look excellent in the modeling department. Ringling has awesome animation work but that is not what I am looking for. I understand the gaming industry needs a mix of skill set, natural talent and software aptitude. How much of the equation is color theory, drawing, etc. How do you get good at exceptional art skills and exceptional 3d technical skills without going to school for 6 years? Is there a compromise than be had somewhere between concept art and 3d? I want to become a great 3d artist, but I don't want my lack of skills in art to hold me back. I don't want to be the guy that knows 3d tools but can't model correctly and the other way around too. Lol, I am rambling. If anyone has a school recommendation let me know.
