So I'm curious, anybody here listens to what usually are categorized as black metal? Favourite bands?

Woods Of Infinity, Svartnar, Dissection, Mörker, Koldbrann, Heresi, Endstille, Stielas Storhett, Angantyr, Make A Change... Kill Yourself, Holmgang, Horna, Sargeist, Immortal, Shining, Urgehal, Tsjuder, Silencer, Stillhet, Aska, Forgotten Woods, Darkthrone... the list goes on, lots of great bands out there.

Almost 10 years ago i was listening to a lot of that stuff, but not anymore.

I used to listen bands like Burzum(Tomhet is still one of my favourite songs),Summoning,Enslaved,Darkwoods my Betrothed,Satyricon,Dimmu Borgir(stormblast was my favourite) and many others that i don't remember right now.:P
Also the first couple of albums of Bathory were priceless!(Although i preffered his viking stuff...R.I.P.)

yeah, after 1993 black metal set foot in the mainstream.
i dunno if this is correct, i'm not the right person to ask about black metal, nor do i live in norway. but i do know that there's like mainstream black metal and the "true/elite" black metal.
most people aren't too fond of it, it's got quite a controversial history and a good number of the bands have done questonable things.
but more importantly is the essence that was captured in this music.

either way, they both got great bands, but i still prefer the oldest stuff that came around. but sure of course i check out new bands and such. there's lots of different sounding ones and even some have nothing to do with being satanic or anti-christ.

my personal favorites are darkthorne, anything by darkthrone. also bathory, anything by bathory.

those two are my most favorites.
but i'll say there are some albums that are absolutley powerful listenign experiences. recently i've listened to Abigor's "Apokalypse" album, honestly i have to say is that it sounds 5 times more hellish and evil than "battles in the north" by Immortal.

Yes, I listen to some music that could be categorized as black metal.
My favorite band, in that genre as well as generally speaking, would have to be Windir.
I always recommend them to people looking for amazing music. Check out songs like The Blacksmith and the Troll of Lundamyri, The Longing, Mørkets fyrste, Journey to the end, and others. The first mentioned is my all-time favorite; I've listened to it probably over a thousand times, literally speaking. The Norwegian(original) title is "Svartesmeden og Lundamyrstrollet".

It's from the album Arntor, a great record. Recommended.

And just to point it out, for those who might care(which I personally don't; all I care about is the music itself): Windir was not involved in any satanism, church-burning, nazism or racism.
The vocalist and founder, who sadly died in a blizzard up in the mountains where he lived, labelled his music Sogna metal early on in his career, a term describing its geographical origin.

"Death's Design" by Diabolical Masquerade is one of my favorite albums in any music genre. It's something like 40 tracks, but it's all one big song. Every group of songs is separated into "Movements", however. Each movement has a very distinct style but it keeps the same theme throughout the entire album, and it works as one big song.

theres a fairly new american band called leviathian as well.

Burzum have done some really great stuff. If you like early Dimmu Borgir you should check out swedish Mörker.

Today, the alot of people in bm bands don't want to be part of the so called Underground black metal scene, simply because it's so full of shit. People whos there for the fun of it, for the "coolness" of it etc. To me black metal was, and still is, about not necessarily Satan or ant-christian beliefs, but also deeper. Deeper meaning Death, and life uhm thinkings... not the right word but the best one I can come up with at the moment. Haha I dont know really... I dont consider myself being part of any UGBM group or anything.

Gnosis and Lohan, I'll be sure to check those artists out!

some people take black metal way too seriously.
NSBM is the worst out of it all.

Emperor, Bathory, old satyricon, and Agalloch are some of my fav BM bands.

even though Opeth isnt fully black metal, I still love the Black metal elements they incorporate into their music, one of the best metal bands ever.

Edit: How could I forget about Dissection!

How can you make that list and not include Venom is all I want to know. Sure they have their faults, but they ARE black metal. "WOMEN, LEATHER, AND HELLLLLL!!!!!"

Once more I must urge any fans of powerful metal (or good music in general) to listen to Windir, and especially The Blacksmith and The Troll of Lundamyri.
I'm listening to this song over and over right now, and it's truly magical. After having heard it approximately a thousand times, literally, it still sends shivers down my spine and gives me goosebumps. It's getting better and better each time I listen to it.

The atmosphere is do dark, sad and at times melancholical, yet strangely life-affirming at the same time. It has a progressive nature, and the changes of tempo and other aspects of the arrangement, is brilliantly performed.
I have never encountered music coming even remotely close to the power and quality of this song, or Windir generally. It's truly mindblowing.

I'm not into pure black metal, but pagan black more precisely slavic pagan and viking, that my stuff. What can I say, I like woods, seas and ancient mythology 8)
Bends like: Skyforger, Manegarm, Finntroll, Arkona, Magog, Aes Dana, Trollfest, Moonsorrow (<3 ), Thyrfing, Melechesh, Uaral, Falkenbach, Immortal, Dissection etc..

I do agree that some fans of black metal take the music too seriously, often don't listen anything but black metal and are pretty conservative. Not my type of people to hang out with...

like once every 2 years i still listen to emperor, satyricon etc for an hour or so... but due to this thread i felt urged to listen to Moonspell - Wolfheart for the first time in like 10 years again :P
btw earlier crade of filth records were actually much cooler than you might think now. check out "the principle of evil made flesh" if you get a chance.

Everything folkish: Folk Black, PAgan , Viking Black, no pure Black Metal. Sounds too boring to me and lacks a decent melody.

Got to say you're wrong there. But on the other hand what does genres matter? All bm I listen to have clear melodies.

Recommended:

Angantyr - Kampen Fortsætter. Melodies.

Mörker - Skuggornas Rike. Melodies.

For good grindcore I can recommend Brutal Truth and Haemorrhage.

Black metal? Check 'Impaled Northern Moonforest' (go to http://www.inm.acousticblackmetal.org/, you can download whole album for free). But don't take it serious ;)

The A.C. guitarist has played there, but not sure who was the drummer. :)
