Hey yall,

I'm doing some research on artists in the hopes of starting my artist search. So how much do you charge? And what area of art do you expert in? Thanks

This is far too vague a question to get any meaningful response.
It's like asking "how much does food cost?"

Really depends on who you are doing what for also hehe. I will maybe do some illustrations for a black metal band, illus they can have inside the booklet to theire next release. I do it for free, it's a small band and it's only fun for me. First "job" for me ever anyway hehe.

Sorry but this "research" won't teach you anything.

first of all, never ask an artist to do something for free.
if you can't do it, it's worth paying for.

the graphic artist's guild book of pricing and ethical guidelines is good for AVERAGE costs.
so if someone is better than average, they deserve more.
if they're worse, don't hire them.

hmm, thanks peeps, I see some helpful stuff. But I think I need to dole out more info: http://www.khulsey.com/. this Guy is great. I need technical concept sketches. Photorealistic if possible. Of various car parts.

The reason this guys charges like up to, I think, $3000 USD per drawing is because his drawings are done with Illustartor. I think CAD would raise the price somewhat.

Anyway for some reason I though it was implied that most freelancers charge by the hour. I guest hourly rates is what I was looking for. Kevin Hulsey charges per job. I dont know y he chooses that type of pricing struc. he'd make more per hour. Maybe he's too quick?

By the hour is B.S. No artist charges that way becuase an experienced artist who works fast would only be punishing themself.
It also doesn't matter what program an artist works in either. When you pay for art, it makes NO DIFFERENCE how long, or what medium it took the artist to create the work. You are just paying for the level of quality and experience that attracted you to them in the first place.

Exactly. Also, the major factor in pricing is usage. Images of equivalent complexity could be priced differently by orders of magnitude depending on the circumstances. Bigger client/higher profile project/more exclusivity = more money. It's important for a freelancer to have an hourly minimum in mind, but only to judge whether a project is worthwhile.
