Hallo, everybody! I've always had a problem with closed-source software. For some reason it simply irks me in some unforgivable way. I've been a proud Linux user for about 5 years now, and I'm finally becoming happy with our open-source image manipulation tool. Generally I don't recommend something until it's ready for the world-at-large, and I'd give the GIMP my stamp of approval. It has replaced Photoshop in every way I can imagine, and even surpassed PS in some ways. Before I start going nuts on what's great and what's not so great about the GIMP, has anybody else used it? Any opinions? Anything you'd like to see that you don't? I'm really curious to see what the everyday users have to say. Post up, and if you haven't tried it out yet or don't have anything to say, visit
Linux Installer (http://www.gimp.org/unix/)
OSX Installer (http://www.gimp.org/macintosh/)
Windows Installer (http://www.gimp.org/windows/)
Put up whatever impression it's had on you! (I like it mostly because it's free and legal to use for anything)

Hey, rightly so. There's a reason it's still #1 after all these years! I'm just proposing an alternative. There's no sense in limiting yourself to one tool. That's like saying, I'm a painter, but I only use this ONE brush. No, I haven't ever tried another because this one is all I want. It's a growing process. Try it or don't try it, I still have both, but I find myself using the GIMP more and more often, relative to PS.

I downloaded gimp. I have never used another painting program in my life, ive loked around and have started to use it, here's a link to my sketch book if you want it, i have done a couple of gimp related things: http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=78560
i only started using it about 2 weeks ago so feel free to give tips and crits on how to use the program, and my art.
cheers

is a good program, i found the pen tool very good. The only problem i have is to set the ram memory and swap usage, i try half the total ram( i have 768m)but the response still is too slow, anyway probably i made something wrong, but still a good program, thanks to the gimp and open office im began to know a little about open source.

Assuming you're in Windows, make sure you aren't using your page file as ram (means you're using the very very slow hard drive for the very fast ram). Check it in the performance tab of the Task Manager (press CTL+ALT+DEL to bring it up). That could be the source of the slowness. The worst part about the gimp is learning the interface. I'm not a big fan of how everything comes up as a separate window. I'm working on a new pyGTK interface for it, but unless I find some other people working on the same thing it'll be a few months (at least) before I have something worth submitting. Wish me luck, hopefully I'm not the only one who wants one big (dual-monitor) window with all the separate tools docked in one place.
