Can someone tell me why people are infatuated with the anime style animals with various female/male anatomy?
Am I the only one who thinks this type of art borders on bestiality? I just don't understand it. Seems like that's all they have plastered all over deviantart. I don't see much of it here, which is why I'm liking CA.ORG much better lately. I know no one can really say what is art and what is not but to me it's just tacky. Where did this originate from? Is there some kind of comic or show that promotes this type of illustration?
*steps off soap box*
BTW - This is my opinion, I didn't mean to get a flame war started, just wanted to know what the big deal is with buxom larger than life breasts on a cat or fox etc..

I don't understand it myself, I kind of feel the same way, but... People like what they like. Who knows. Maybe they feel that animals are somehow better or more pure than people? There's a whole host of reasons.
And some people are just creeps.

you guys might be making fun of furry art, but you're obviously missing the scathing critique of modern society and consumerism which sits just beneath its surface.

Anthropomorphism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthropomorphic) doesn't have to be manga styled, it's been done for thousands of years (egyptian gods anyone?) It can be done badly and it can be done well. Is the dogs playing poker painting bordering on bestiality? I'm not sure why there is so much bad furry chibi art with erotic tendencies on DA but I know that I was raised on animal headed humanoids, Thundercats, Mickey Mouse, Star Fox, etc. Add to that plenty of lycanthropy stories and you have material to last you years.

Anthropomorphism, so that's what it's called. I wasn't referring to say...Sonic the Hedgehog or anything. I do not think the dogs playing poker is sick, nothing wrong with that.

The animal creatures are called furries and... I have no idea why they are so popular.
I think animals walking on two legs but otherwise looking like animals (like in childrens' books) are fine and can be quite cute, but when the creatures look like a mutated lovechild between a human and an animal... I'm left just as confused and wondering wtf as you are...

I've always found the kinkier ones somewhat unnerving. I agree, it does make you wonder about beastiality boundries.

Man, it's just another subculture, another community. If you really want to know about it and not just pass judgement on an entire group of people... Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furry_fandom) seems like a decent start.

There was a great episode of CSI dealing with furries. . .

It's easy to criticize something you don't understand... I guess. To say you don't like the art is one thing...but to compare the whole community to something that is quite easily regarded as entirely different is just inflamatory. You say you aren't trying to start a flame war....but how could you expect anything else from your statement?

Penabled, I did actually read the Wikipedia article on this after Misteh's post. There is in fact a sub-culture within a culture that deals with the explicit 'yiff' furries and they are looked down upon in their own community because it makes them look bad. It's kind of like some Manga/Hentai that makes girls and boys look 11 years old and they have a size D cup flopping everywhere. Some things are just wrong IMO. This is one of them.
I really just wanted the general concensus and everyone's thoughts on this matter. Seems like it's pretty divided. Although most Pro-furry responses seem like most politicians these days..politically correct to the point of losing our sense of morals and values.
I'm not saying it is bad linework/CG but I think it's a bit distasteful. (see link in above post)
Mainly I got what I wanted here, just more on the subject from the pro's. No need to get nasty :-)

I'm curious: in what ways are furries considered to be morally objectionable?

Erotic furry art = bad taste, to put it bluntly. It's purpose is clear. There is no failure of the artist in depicting the message of the art, and I'm pretty sure there's no failure of the audience (everyone else who sees it) to understand it. It's erotic. It's furry. It's art. It's disturbing at a core level. Bad taste.
Anime styled art with dog ears or other things like that? I can see where artists put them in because it makes their creations look "cute" and/or "mysterious or part of a spirit/monster world". Personally I find anime/manga style very cliche and boring. Some great examples in there, but it's like finding a beautiful song, then having it played on the radio a thousand times in a row, then having not-so-great musicians all playing their version of the same song and they are played on the radio as well. It just gets to be too much.

Josh said it better than I did. Seedling, I really really am starting to become a fan of your posts and teachings...so much respect there :-) I did not mean furries in general morally objectionable. Again, the link I posted above explains my objections...as Joshua said, Erotic furry art=bad taste/offensive.

Save your respect, I find you inordinately (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/inordinately) easy to offend. Projecting on other artists why you think they are doing something is as futile as whinning about something noone is about to stop doing just to please you.

Well said Qitsune, perhaps you are right. My apologies everyone.
