My organic studies

I'm working on studying organic forms in nature to help with my 3d modelling (I do lots of sciencey type intracellular things). Here is my first result playing around in Painter with a photograph of bark. Not really happy with the specular highlights. Since these are quick studies, I may not go back and refine them but I will apply comments to subsequent attempts. Any comments are much appreciated.

This is not supposed to be anything, I'm resisting the urge to turn it into some "thing" like a gnarly twisted mutant baby. I'm just focusing on texture and trying to draw out natural looking abstract forms.
