C&C Generals is nice but IMO only really fun in LAN. The Internet option is not very reliable at least not from where i'm at (lots of disconnects) and the single player/skirmish does get a tad repetitive. In LAN you can do challenging battles where the true strategy and capabilities of the game come in.

Otherwise it's a nice game, really mainstream RTS but it has some nice details.

WC3 IS better than C&C Generals in my opinion. Other than that I think you should buy Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. It comes out in maybe four months time? Its already out on the Xbox and it is greatness!

i was questioning about that other day. nwn expansion sounds too much. the game was fine and all, yhea but anyway...

i'll wait for halflife 2 to "buy" a game. i like to have originals when comes to games that will have an expantion for sure.

>>> sorry to go off topic with a game vs game discussion but it's so much FUN to think about! <<<

When comparing the two games W3 and C&C Generals, it's important to see both their differences and their similarities. Only then can one give a fair recommendation, and is one able to separate (but display!) the _personal_ opinions that, in combination with the game offered, lead to the selection of one game over the other.

I think W3 is a good game and in many respects 'better' or 'more evolved' than C&C Generals, mostly because it is more versatile and has a number of features that encourage discovery and role-play elements in the game, therefore making more viable strategies available. C&C Generals seems aimed at offering a 'stereotype' RTS game, that works just in the way that you would expect, and has only a few (but highly effective) new features that enhance gameplay over other C&C and other RTS games, but to do so in a very high quality manner and insure a very well balanced and playable game.

Warcraft is more evolved in the way that it seeks to enrich the RTS genre by including Roleplaying features, thereby getting the player more involved with the game. The game tries to overcome various existing problems with the genre in novel ways, mostly directed at giving the player more control or influence in the on-screen battles, thereby making it more strategic (or in fact tactical).

C&C tries to overcome these problems too, but it does it in the more traditional way of specialising and balancing unit types, to the point that unit types must be used complimentary in order to be effective. This is only true for Warcraft in a far lesser degree. The unit types in Warcraft are mostly existing ones (except for the new races) that have standard powers.

These adaptations affect the gameplay in both C&C and in W3 to insure the player spends more time constructing armies of complimentary units, having them support each other and getting the most of the combined units' strength.

In C&C, it's imperative to be able to select complimentary units to be ablle to support, guard or reinforce other units, or to help out when an enemy unit with superior abilities arrives (try using rocket launchers vs. a tank -- the tank would simply run over them killing many rl units before being destroyed. An 800$ tank can kill maybe 6 $300 rl units that way. But try placing one rl unit in either a fast vehicle or a building and it's the other way around. Or call in an airstrike by your Migs. Highly effective unless the enemy brought anti-aircraft guns... This makes C&C a micro-management game, but a game where you constantly manage 'groups' of a unit type. (well at least i do but i'm not a superior player ;-))

W3 is more about having smaller, but mixed type groups that are harder to control and then most types of unit can be selected to have a special ability. So W3 does tend to focus largely on extreme micromanagement (hero abilities are very important) and magic use, something that i personally find tedious (selecting and applying the correct magic item quickly in a furious battle can decide that battle easily in favour of the most 'nimble' player regardless of any other strategy/tactics, thereby making it a RTS/Action game too much)

It does have superior selection, unit balance and overall gameplay to the more depressing and 'realistic' C&C games. I think that Warcraft feels much more Arcade and gamey because of that. Also it has far superior AI to C&C ...

Oh well, both of em make fun play in a LAN game ;-) and Blizzard deserves encouragement for the way they create quality in their games.

>>> rambe off.... <<<

So: download the W3 and C&C demos first and see for your self if RTS is your game ;-)

nah, just buy wc3 and the frozen throne expansion pack RIGHT NOW!!!

don't worry, it is the right choice. :D

c&c = constantly build up an army of whatever you can make at the moment

wc3 = strategize every second of designing your army/base/defenses/characters

:chug:

though i'm a little dissapointed with the wc3 AI, which just makes whatever they can at the moment and does the same thing every level (not to mention they don't know what to do in levels where they are surrounded by water/trees/whatever and can't attack you by ground)

but internet play is really hard! and the last level in the expansion

the world editor for wc3 lets you do just about anything too. and i mean anything.

you guys can continue this conversation here i don't mind, but i think warcraft3 is the worst rts ever made and it is going to ruin the genere. The early warcraft3 beta was FANTASTIC, i played it daily, but the full release just bored the hell out of me.

oh and
AGE OF MYTHOLOGY OWNS WARCRAFT. I don't even have to state my reasons to say this. it just is, warcraft is way to mircomangement, the differences between characters is so small that if you make one mistake you could loose the game.

I agree with Davi on W3 being too role-play but it still looks and feels great... I hate it when i have a larger army, the element of surprise and the intelligence on the opponent and he wins a battle because he can cast a spel quicker -- it leads to uninteresting (semi)dominant strategies...

Still waiting for the 'killer RTS' thoug.

Anybody play Warrior Kings: Battles? They had a nice thing going with that Valhalla mode but man does dthe selection and control of units suck! And then we're not even talking about the formation AI... These formations of 24 spearmen that are said to be 'highly trained' but they formation-turn like any 24 unruly 6-year olds in the schoolyard. Works ike this: a 12-wide, 2 deep formation of spearmen --> a crawling anthill --> wait 2 minutes --> a 12 wide, 2 deep formation again, hopefully facing the right direction. Unless of course the cavalry cought up just in the anthill phase, then you're not going to have any spearmen left ;-) A good idea, but badly in need of a drill sargeant. Some of it is nice though, including terrain advantage and such, but the AI is so bad and the game so SLOW (i've got a 2.4G) that it's a failure...

Medieval: Total War is supposed to be good. And i liked the game Stronghold where one could build a really really cool castle and then have the opponent come and try to siege it. That's a great game.

I'm still waiting for an RTS that does not involve so much economy, i mean: let the computer handle that, let me give directions and handle the army! That's what it's all about! ;-)

i'll check that flight sim out, it has a demo. I've never liked most flight sims because i usually just get sick of the cockpit taking up so much of the screen... I'd like a good 3rd person view plane game

this are old now but they were rts with a really good gameplay : total anihilation and battle realms... what do u think?

Well, then you'll dig IL-2, because you can either turn the cockpit off, or just switch to one ofthe external views. There's even one (F8 I think) that stays centered behind the plane and you can control height, zoom, etc. You'll need a flight stick though...

You should buy Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic! You will need an xbox to be able to play it, though :P
Or, you will have to wait until the PC release. But it will be worth the wait - what a great game it is!
Other than that, I don't know. I don't play many games anymore...especially not on the PC...you should get Splinter Cell, though. If it looks better on PC than it does on xbox you're in for a real treat - the lightning and shadows in that game are fantastic IMO :)

gorilla ive got to agree with you -.-
you say C&C tries to enhance its gameplay by trying with unit balance and design, but they fail as always. I always thought C&Cs big problem was the Imbalance between units. Take Tiberian Sun for isntance, why would you want to buy soldiers or planes if you can have engineers/apcs/commando cyborgs. I think this is where wc3 is in mayn respects better, providing you with an assortment of units which are ALL useful, giving you a much greater variety of options to abse ur strategy on, i'd know..ive palyed over 1500 games on battle.net hehe :D. But i guess im just biased cause i love blizz... ;) Game Racist so as to say..

ah yes @ davi
if you have a playstation 2 i strongly advise getting final fantasy 10. Or Freelancer for PC, its quite fun

Davi i dunno if you are into the whole MMORPG scene but something to try out is Asheron's Call 2. if you have the right hardware the visuals in the game are amazing! (and you have the right hardware)
The outdoor scenery is breathtaking. I sometimes find myself standing on a grassy hilltop just staring out at the landscape watching cloud shadows move across the ground.

Even if you dont like online pay-to-play games there is a free, 15 day, 900Mb, no credit card needed trial available that i definitely recommend checking out, if just to test your card.
here are some screenshots:
http://www.microsoft.com/games/ac2/visuals.asp

and a link to the free trial:
http://www.microsoft.com/games/ac2/freetrial.asp

...if you try it make sure to turn your antialiasing and all the grafic options on and on high :D
AND if anyone here happens to try this out, join the server called 'Morningthaw' and give me a /tell ... my character's name is ummo.

Also you can find the Doom3 beta on some bittorrent sites.
Here is a link to a listing of bittorrent sites:

-I find SuperNova.org to have some good torrents

Buy Star Wars Jedi Acedemy. (when it comes out) It is pretty damn cool to play as Multiplayer. Force Powers, Light sabres and a plethora of Weaponry. good shit.

Yes the IL-2 is a sweet flight sim game I played it for the first time yesterday and it is waaay cool. I watch some of the other dudes play it and it gets pretty intense as a multiplayer. The environment is beautiful and you can customize your Aircraft skins in PS.

Wont max out your system but I had a hell of a good time playing Dungeon Seige. Sounds like you like strategy.. but if you like RPGs at all, pick this up. Morrowind is fun too (yeah, I am behind the times).

Actually, I need a new game myself dammit! That Temple of Elemental Evil looks very nice :) Still have a month or two wait for that though.

Really, I am just waiting for World of Warcraft.. but that is even further out :(

Agree ummo, I tried AC2 and really liked it. Got to lvl 30 or so. Didnt have time for it though. Sounds like the game might be in trouble now too. Read somewhere recently that they merged their 11 servers down to 4 servers.. It was a great game though. Hope they can pull through.

Monthly fees have started to seem really lame to me too. Still wont stop me from playing WoW however.

Edit: I just remembered the next game I will buy:

Chaos Legion (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/adventure/chaoslegion/screenindex.html)

It is coming out for the PS2 in a few days.. but it looks like they will release a PC version soon too. Loved the original Devil May Cry too much to pass this game by.. (athough Devil May Cry 2 wasn't the best.. but the first kicked poop!) and Chaos Legion is supposed to play similar to that.

Plus, it looks very cool:
