those are some nice sketches. i like how you try to draw things from imagination. it would help you get a better foundation to draw things from life, not only from photos, since you still have some difficulties with color and proportions. i like your SP's, but i guess since they are painted off from photos you didn't learn too much from doing them. keep going, you will grow quickly.

May 21st, 2007, 05:42 AM
Saa - thanks for ur comment, yeah ur right i dont really draw from life, but i do from photo's.
maybe i should start drawing from life.
as for the SP's, i dont really agree i did learn a lot from doing them, maybe not as much as i would've if i'd drawn them from life, but i did learn a better understanding for colors
hope to show some pics drawn from life soon hehe

May 21st, 2007, 05:47 AM
i agree with the above. your colour skills really are great, lavely stuff goin on in that department, but your figures forms are letting you down. honest, from life is the best way, but then again ya cant rule out the usefulness of photos when life drawaing simply isnt possible. but ye, lil figure work should really do ya work wonders.

this will be printed on canvas thats why i have the white bg
I hate the rainbow, I hate cupid, I hate the white bg. But thats what they wanted and who am i to ignore that..
anywayz 3 hours in this.. pretty quick huh
cant say if i like the faces, they look like them.. they're pretty detailed...
but i think its laking texture.. or maybe it needs a more paintery feel to it.. a bit to photo like now, dont know really.
plz C&C so that i can really make the people who this is for happy
Edit : cupid was also drawn from a Ref btw

Hey man, didn't know you had a sketchbook here.
*sigh*
I gotta update mine...I'm such a lazy tard :bashful:
Anyway, that last piece with the portraits is looking pretty crisp. Good details but I can see what your saying in terms of lacking some kind of texture, but I wouldn't mess with it. As for the background, maybe think about adding more blues and hints of clouds further down and behind the heads and Cupid. That might actually help Cupid look less static and will push the faces out more as well I think. Dunno...you could possibly make the womens teeth more white also, but thats just a small nit-pick. The skin tones are awesome though. See you around the CHOW maybe.

I love the couple picture! They look so happy! You did a nice job making them look real. I would suggest that in the part above the rainbow be less scratchily blended into the white. Blur it, like you did on the sides.
I like your style and your ideas, so keep it up!
Joey-b
June 8th, 2007, 02:06 PM

i REALLY like the colors that you use and your atmosphere! :) :) :) :)
that cliff with the bridge is very very good! the only thing that i see wrong is the reflection. water isn't a pure mirror, and how it reflect depends on the dirtiness of the water. dirtier the water, darker, and less sharp the reflection. also, water reflection is ALWAYS darker (even just a little bit) than the real object.
great stuff! i can't wait to be seeing more!
Joey-b

Hey Joey-b,
How's it going lately? Well you seriously made mass improvements in the portraits you've been doing lately. Okay so about that last piece. I left you a comment on DA but not much of a critique so here it goes.
I think you nailed the face, honestly I don't see ant major flaws...IT ROCKS! The armor is lacking though when compared to that face. It needs more smoothing out and I think a couple highlights are too harsh. Dunno...it just comes off as looking rushed right now.
I know you like doing mechanics a lot so you might want to start collecting some good reference material on stuff like, armor, robotics. These I think you do need to improve on somewhat. Study more from life...thats what I need to do more also.
Keep working on it.
Joey-b
January 5th, 2008, 09:54 AM
Hey Trashy!, thank you
Yeah im trying more from life also.. but i do that with pencils..
and my scanner's busted so cant post it up here
As for the armor, yeah i know i should get better at that cause this looks a bit shitty, practising a lot though so i get better everytime

Heyo Joey B, I really like some of the stuff you've got in here. Some of those environmental pieces are really sweet... though you seem to crank them out pretty quickly, so maybe you should post more of them more often. :P
I would suggest to continuously work on anatomy, even if they are just from photos... especially hands and feet. Despite your studies, those always seem to be the parts that you tend to avoid or save til last. If you really want to see some live models, research any schools or groups in your area that might hold a live drawing class on a weekend or something... they're usually inexpensive, and you can save yourself the embarrassment of asking someone you know to pose nude for you.
Keep up the good work! :yayca:

The last ones are interesting. With the muschroom cave, I really like the soft ambiance around the entrance and mushrooms themselves, but some hard edged lines and texture in the front and away from the light would add some neat focal points. The floating city has some style to it, but still perhaps some culteral influenced buildings would have been cool to research and implement. I do like the range of colors in there, push a bit more blue/purple into the top of the sky to match the nice orange on the ground

hey joey!!!! thnx for stopping by my sb!!!!
you seem to have a ferature that I have never ever seen in another sketchbook. Usuallyy the last things to become really good in someone's work are faces, portraits. But for some reason, although you're obviously in the middle of a learning process, the maturity and freshness of some of your portraits is way ahead everything else!!! Don't neglect it, it's definatelly a big advantage of yours!!!!
your enviroments are getting better by the post too! Couple of things you should start trying is adjusting your palette. Don't think "real color" in your head, and try to create atmosphere. For instance, the mushroom piece, is accurate chromatically, brownish rocks, yellowish sunlight, etc, but how bout if you try and paint the same piece, using only greenish, blueish colors? It will oddly seem so more real, in a twisted way. Check out the big guys, coro, manley, all of the faces above, and see what they do with their colors. Also, try sharpening some points around your pieces.
Use your own work as an example. the mountains, show that you can be brave in your strokes, and they do seem more alive.
I am definately not the guy to judge speed paints, but I know for sure that the standard photochop circle brush, is a really big trap, with it's smooth blending and silky results. Still, when painting rocks for example, you mustn't fall in that trap! ;)
keep it up man!
Joey-b
February 17th, 2008, 09:18 AM
The Jester - thank you for ur long comment
Im glad ur liking my portraits.. i think their better than the rest cause i draw a lot of portraits (pencil mostly) and its easier to get lighting/colors/anatomy better when using a photo for ref, and also a good lesson
cool that my enviro's are getting better, and ur right i should think outside the box more, im trying to do that with the brushstrokes, not paying to much attention to details, but more to how the light falls in.. ones i got that down a bit better ill definatly start with throwing in some purples n stuff
as for the round brush, i know it sucks for rocks.. im still trying to find a good brush for drawing rocks, or a good method.. tis hard but im learning haha

Hey Joey, Good work so far mate. I noticed that toad deer thing in the challenges the other day, didnt realise it was yours... has a nice idiot apathy style thing going on those that white line is a bit distracting... Nice pencil handling, tho some edge variation would really push yo to the next level, its just that whole solid outer line that i personally dont like, but hey if you like it keep doing it.. Keep posting mate ;-)

Hey Joey-b, time I left a comment in here :) Nice SB you've got here, I particularly like the Penguin Professor for CHOW and that little COW critter :)
That last piece with Hulk and Wolverine has some issues though. The hands are okay, but there's some other anatomy things to take care off. First, the shoulder of Hulk is sort of missing. You drew his shirt between his neck and arm, but it might be worthwhile to check what should be going on underneath it. Also, the way the Hulk is holding Wolverine makes it sort of difficult for the latter to hold his left leg like that. Hulk's little finger is reaching through his body atm :)

good stuff. sometimes you hatching follows the form a little too much giving the impresseion of a net thrown over some of your planes. Try hatching in many directions to build up form. Its like when you paint and decorate a wall. you should go one way all the way and then another way for the second coat. the eye doesn't notice the brushmarks if you just work a little more randomly.

Gilead
January 29th, 2009, 08:15 AM
Man you're finished works are so much nicer than mine. Both the pencils and the paintings, everything has a very strong sense of form.
Your "vampireish" self portrait is especially nice. Complexion's too good for a classic vampire though. More like a normal, healthy young man with a taste for human blood. But then we all have our little foibles.
Joey-b
January 29th, 2009, 10:06 AM

The orc is going well. My only suggestion is to be careful of the highlights. This is mainly on the flesh. It can start to look plastic and unnatural. The differences in value on the forms of the body is usually quite subtle unless in strong direct lighting.
Oh also the light source seems to differ on different parts of the body. BY looking at the cast shadow from the spikes on his shoulder plate I would assume the main light source is from his back left. but then I'm conused becasue the lighting on the muscels would suggest it is kind of top down.
