welcome to the sketchbooks...get rdy to update if you wanna be seen
your characters and colours are allright but one thing you need to keep in mind is that mucles arent seperate blocks. skin is on top of them and the way the light reflects off it creates that tonal effect. if you can try studying up on human anatomy. lifedrawing really helps if you can afford it. and try this site

seems like you've got the human face down pretty good, I am not good enough yet to provide any kind of critique - hope you keep us up to date more often - the last piece with the buildings could use some depth with either texture or more shadow, however.

The buildings are really lacking some depth and adding more shadow or texture would probably works. Thanks

01. When something looks wrong, redo it again from nothing. The beginning must be right.
02. See the big picture. Zoom out.
03. Texture brush = interesting shapes, sizes, abstract shapes.
04. Dont think, Feel and then think.
05. People look at white.
Stuffs to remind myself because i dont listen to myself.

Hey, your sketchbook looks really cool. The environments have a great flow and composition. Only crit I can give you is to watch up with the relationship between the foreground and the midground. The foreground should have the greatest contrast between dark and light, so most often the darkest darks and the whitest white will be there. In several of your paintings the foreground and midground is about equal in value which doesn't really push the depth enough. If you look at some reference: try to notice the value of the foreground objects, like how shadows in the lower corners of a photograph is very close to black. Anyways this was great to look at , and I really aprreciated your list of things to remember when paintings environments. Gonna print it out and put it next to my computer. Hoping to see more of your studies soon!
cheers

Done it a few days ago. Can be improved.
526646
Based loosely on a ref. No composition is made which is why there is no flow.
Here something i have learnt from reading and doing.
01. There is no subject, only shapes of dark and light value.
02. See how the values create interesting contrast.
03. Observe interesting shapes.
IIKII
November 25th, 2008, 09:23 AM
527491
Few days ago. Started it by creating interesting shapes to form it.
527489
My first try at these kind of stuffs. I am surprised that i enjoyed doing it. -Started it by random shape
-Create form by using big size brush. Big mass shape is easier to see the form.
-When i am satisfied with the form, the details begins.
527490
Done it really fast. A little impressed by it but still quite boring..
- Create a line of flow for composition.
- Insert 4 main value starting with the darkest one.
- Creating shapes along the flow and making sure that the shapes are interesting.
-Adding focus point which is the lightest value.

It's great to see your dedication and I love it that you've started to challenge yourself with colors. Just try to put as much consideration in the values in your color studies as you do in the black and white ones. Keep it up mate; I want to see more as always ;)

I see improvement overall the last post was a step back though. To offer help, you need to think about saturation and hue. Objects farther away are less saturated, more cool, and lower value. Try looking at a reference while you paint and try to match the colors as close as you can without picking using the eyedropper. Then use different brushes for different subjects, try soft rounds for clouds, chalk brushed for rock, textured brushed for trees, etc. Also use, yellow-green rather than pure green for lit grass.
IIKII
December 6th, 2008, 11:31 PM
My last post is a landscape study without using the eyedropper. After reading what you said, i looked at the photograph again and picking the colors to compare it with my study piece.
You are right about things geting grayer when they are further away but in the photo, it isnt. The water is very saturated. But you are right about the green, it is indeed yellow green:).
I have never tried using custom brush in my study but i think i will do it now. Thanks for your crits.

From a quick view through your sketchbook I'd recommend going back to basics! Almost all art is built on drawing with good old pencil and pen! Everyone gets told this pretty much all the time but : draw from life! Especially if you want your pieces to really pop and look realistic. Keep going!

More from old times.
Some things.
-I almost never finish anything.
-People always said that doing grayscale stuffs are more easier but to me, Wrong. I NEED to feel the mood in order to paint. No color = no mood.
-My mood control my skills.
-The whole value thing makes me insane. Why so much dark?I dont like dark. Why use contrast?I hated contrast.Composition of light and dark are ?.

This quote from michelangelo makes alot of sense.
The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.

sweet concepts, they all seem a bit saturated though, try to stick with a simpler pallet when you paint

Didn't do much practices but just thinking.

Well, i dont agree with the crits given. 90% were focus on the characters and the composition design. I purposely made the background so saturated & they aren't that far enough to turn grayish.
Anyway, this is an experience for me. I used hues that i never dare to use it & trying to create a fairly realistic scene without any ref.

Knowing something isn't good enough, you can forget it real soon. The hole need to be dug alot bigger so you will finally realize the existence of it and will avoid it.

Starting to get some knowledge.
- Big shapes are important in seeing the big picture
- Paint the whole image and then start on detail. The relationships of value or color is more important.
- Extreme dark and white create nice pic but balancing is difficult
- Remove any concepts/ideas of painting in your mind in order to see what's real
- Texture helps alot in creating interesting points in painting.

Your sb is super interesting! Some of the figures look a bit flat, though, and I think that's because you don't see many clothing folds wrapping around the figures' bodies.
But just keep posting! Your desert studies in your last post are really pretty.
