color blending modes

what is a good blending mode for colorizing a greyscale painting? ive experimented with all of them but i cant seem to get what im looking for.

You want to experiment more with color balance and the individual channels than use merge modes. Go into the channels box and use the dodge and burn tools (you can also use brightness or lightness on a selection) to alter each one. It takes a little getting used to but the results are fantastic.
