hi all, i'm pretty new to CA aside from lurking and oggling the pretty art.
so, i used to draw a lot, and then i started doing 3D and drawing less.
so i'm a bit out of practice and i've made it my goal to draw at least 2 pages of random sketches just for practicing sake, and i hoped i could get some advice and tips from what the pros see in my work. thanks!

Hi Orange
These arent bad at all for someone who hasnt been drawing to much. Keep it up, but work from refrence as much as you work from imagination and you will see a diffrence it you stuck with it. Everyone needs help with anatomy so work on that as much as possible.
You have a good volumetric line thingy going on dont stop that.

reference... meaning life drawing and off of photos and whatnot?
and by volumetric lines. do you mean the construction shapes?
thanks very much for the const. comment, i'll be back with more tomorrow =D

The poses are great and the figures look really three dimensional.
Maybe doing 3D stuff helped? ;)
Somehow it seems as if you cheat when it comes to anatomy by making it too sketchy.
Generally I think getting the idea down like that is ok.
But then maybe you should do another more defined sketch based on the quick version.

yes, i'm positive 3d has helped a lot.
i just picture in my head what the wires would look like in the viewport in 3ds max! =)
when i get outta work today i should have some more stuff, and i'll try doing a little random life drawing, and a more detailed character =)
thanks for the advice!

okay, didn't get a huge amount of time to draw today, cuz of work/gf/buddy's 21st bday etc.
but i did manage to get a little real life ref drawing in there (my hand and my cat).
other than that i was takin a peek at kevin chen's anatomy stuff. i really wanna look hard at that and try and dissect all of the thing going on, but i only got to glance at it earlier.
other than that, i've been working on the open-mouthed facial expression. i want to be able to take any character and replicate their features recognizably and draw them showing any emotion. so begins THAT journey...

please, let me know what you think of my progress.

been a few days, just haven't found time to upload everything, but here it is =)
i got bridgman's complete works yesterday, so i'm trying to pick up on the style he uses for heads and whatnot. really cool, but it's kinda tough to UNlearn and all that. but soon enough i'll have it.
also did a little bit of life-drawing. i SUCK at it ;)
the proportions always get fucked up and the figure comes out looking flat =\.
anyways, it's all practice, right? so if anyone has some useful tips or sees anything that is an obvious thing that they should point out, please do so. =)

yay, i actually have a concept to do!
time to test the new skills acquired over the week.
i can definetly see improvement in the way i visualize and construct things. it's really nice to have a bit more confidence =)
this is for a character i'm making as part of a presentation i give every quarter at the art institute: "making a game character from start to finish".
it's a fantasy character(s) and my first that involves 4 legs AND someone riding an animal. i can't wait to animate it. =)

hey orangecatninja,
great stuff! the volume of your drawings is amazing. i'm currently trying to get such a volumetric feeling in my drawings aswell, and damn, it's hard. maybe i should start working with 3d-programs aswell ;). but then again, that would afford too much time (and probably effort aswell. damn, i'm a lazy bastard ;) ).you also have a very dynamic line. like, you seem to change the line's blackness and strength while drawing - in the right places. have to figure out how to get a feeling for that, too. i especially like your lifedrawings (nice shading) and your bodys. the beastrider is quite nice too.
the beast's legs look a little too weak in the sideview, though.
keep blasting out more stuff. it's really fun to look at :)

hey Kevin
your getting better!
I can see that when you use life drawing
such as the one of your hand, it turns out alot better than
when you draw without reference
I can see that your trying to box out the faces before you draw them
everyone as thier way of doing things but remember to loosen up a bit and do a set of quick warm up gesture drawings before you start something detailed. (that helps me anyway)
I have some updates to my site
there is a walk cycle that I would like you to take a gander at
in the animation section
www.jessedunagan.com
overall looks alot better

Lookin good man..lookin real promising =).
I completely forgot I had ever made a thread of my own in this section..maybe ill scan some pages and post em in there tommorow..but in response to your question:
the book I have is Bridgman's Complete Guide to Drawing from Life (or a title similar to that)...I would find you an amazon.com link, but im insanely tired, and i need to go to bed, lol..sorry.
Keep it up!!!!!

amphex: yeah dude, the complete guide. book fucking rocks.
jesse: i love your concept stuff and sketches, those look really nice. that walk cycle... hmm. he kinda looks like he's staggering. sorry, i couldn't find another way to put it. he doesn't move naturally.
start simple, make it look like he's cross-country skiing, make sure the timing is good and loops well. then start adding the up-down of the pelvis, animating the step forward. then start with the arms and the shoulders... =)

hey man, i am digging the simple shapes and volumetric shapes that i am seeing in your drawings. the heads in perspective are the right way to go about things. keep that up man , and i am looking forward to seeing more improvement.
