What is the best way to keep motivated about finishing a drawing?

Somehow I never seem to finish any of my sketches.

Are we talking studies or personal projects?

For studies I remind myself the valuable knowledge I'll get from finishing it. Personal projects are harder. I've only ever 'finished' one or two. I guess you just have to make sure the subject matter interests you enough...

I limit myself from the outset. If you have a goal in mind, you're more likely to "finish" even if that goal is somewhat nebulous. Lately I've been doing a small daily sketch, like a spark plug or an oil filter (I have car parts lying around, and they're good small objects for a quick morning sketch). It's a lot easier if you can sit down and say "here I go" and not quit until it's finished.

I say you finish it because you want to see it completed. I think that's a good reason

Just keep your pencil moving as much as you can. And try to avoid any erasing whatsoever unless you want to re-draw the area.

Following this advice blindly would end up with rape charges for a large portion of the male population.

Not true, rape is about power and control, not sex. It might lead to an increase in prostitition... ;)

The mindset usually goes "Sex with that woman or those type of women, while I don't have to pay her."

So unless every supermodel or fetish preference suddenly becomes a free prostitute, you'll still be looking at rape charges.

deadlines.... not being funny but it is as simple as that set yourself a deadline if it is a personal project if you don't finish it to a certain standard shelf it come back a fresh with a clear idea of how to improve it.

Also, have a set "finish point". Don't just say "when I think it looks good enough" because I NEVER think my work looks good enough. That one just doesn't work. Sometimes I'll set very specific limits, like 25% of the page inked, or 13 sketches, or something along those lines.

Depending on what you are drawing some background music will help the mood flow. I had an Enya disc in the other day and drew for hours.

Also, you might try reading a good book. If you like realistic Fantasy try picking up a Terry Goodkind book. Talk about being inspired!
