I'm starting to get a bit more serious with drawing and I've been looking into buying a drawing board/drafting table to make things a bit more pleasant. Originally, I was thinking of going with a full table but I also saw that there are "portable" drawing boards available. Does anyone have any experience with these portable ones? My main concern is that judging from online pictures, they don't look very sturdy - I'm worried that they'll move around while I draw.

Also, I do a lot of digital work and I was wondering if people do anything to add a slant to their tablet while they work. Would a portable drawing board be useful for something like this?

i found a nice big drawing table at good will befor i moved off to college for like 25$

for drawing boards theres some good ones i have one that is thin but its a sturdy masonite type stuff and it has built in clams and a nifty handle. the ones they sold us in our college art kit sucked. they looked like they where i inch thick chunk of wood but it was just very thin wood put over cardboard(found that out the first time i tryed to cut something on it and cut thru the whole board). you can get the protable drawing boards and almost any art supply or craft place. probley best to go look at them and see what ya like.
my board it prity big tho so its kinda hard to mess with if your not putting it on an eisle so its a bit big for me to put my wee little tablet on.

I use a drafting table and a clipboard in tandem since it's too much of a pain to raise and lower my desk and I sit in many odd positions. I also recently picked up one of these desk-top swivel boards (http://www.daler-rowney.com/prod_catalogue/ProductPage.asp?category=13&brand=113&ProductID=2207) to use under my clipboard and it's fantastic. On the other hand, when I need to do some perspective work, or sit up, it's easy to move the artsphere to the side and keep drawing.

I always see drawing boards in the classified ads, might be worth checking a few of them out first, that way you get to see it before you buy, and might save yourself a good deal of money in the process.

I know that this post pretty much doesn't answer anything you asked, but just a small bit I thought I'd add as I've never used/don't own one :)

Table top easel with drawing board on regular table is much cheaper and more versatile.
