I'm not sure this is the correct forum for this but here it is.

The people in these forums have been really helpful, and I feel that I'm ready to make this announcement.

AHEM!

In a little over 4 weeks, my undergraduate studies will be finished for the year.

At that time, I want to start the process of enhancing my skills as a fledgling artist.

I have the books, the forums, the hardware, and the drive.

However, I do have to put some goalposts in the road, and so here is what I'm asking.

What weaknesses do you see?

I can tell you what I they are, but I would like a better idea so I can plan my curriculum accordingly.

What I've done so far, minus crappy sketchbook entries (http://cirdan.gfxartist.com/artworks)

1) I think I have an "ok" understanding of light/dark values, but textures I have serious trouble with. Understanding the kinds of strokes etc, is weak.
2) Composition is "ok" but could be better.
3) Art history...I have the book, but it's currently a miniature table (huge!). Need to study the masters.
4) Anatomy and the human form. Notice how there's no people drawings? Yeah, they suck. I have a HUGE problem with proportions. Exercises in construction, and anatomy studies I believe will help cure this. Gesture drawings too.
5) Like I said before, TEXTURES. I love me some formless masses of light, dark, and color, but the only texture I've succeeded in getting close to right is the bark on a tree trunk (a lot of semi-planned/intuited vertical strokes :bashful: ). More real-life studies will help, although since I don't have a scanner yet, all studies will start around my desk. :P

My plan to start out, is to:

1) Practice intensely on construction of the body, the head, and then move on to structures of the body.
2) Practice drawing/painting (probably B/W to start) observed objects for texture, form, and color.
3) Study the great art and architecture of history.
4) Ask for continuous and uncompromising critiquing from the good folk at CA. :yayca:
5) Keep setting the bar higher.

Goalposts so far:
1) Complete the entire Concept Art 101 series by Seedling, before Christmas (too soon? too late? I think I can I think I can...I know I can....)

2) Complete X amount of portraits before Y date. Still figuring this out. Not sure how many sketches, paintings, and exercises I should do per day, but I want to always move forward. No slouching!

That's it guys! Oh, and I'll also start a progress thread too...either a sketchbook thread, a painting thread, or both. Where would those go? Hmm...

Your feedback is always appreciated!

Awww! :-) I'm so flattered. Oh, you can totally get through the assignments by Christmas! They're meant to be sketchbook-type assignments that don't take too long. If you take them at the crazy rate of one a day in theory you could do them in about a month.

I tried to look at the website you linked to, but I am feeling stupid - I wasn't sure what was yours, or if I needed to click on something to get to your work. (I think the turpentine is messing with me right now. . . :-P )

I think your plans are solid! Have you got a sketchbook yet?

Cheers!

And the website has various mediums so some are....most are photo but I figured those demonstrated some kind of "seeing eye". Then click on the pictures to get to the full versions.
